Blab mode on:
The way I look at it, being laughed at and ridiculed in front of thousands is just training for having your privacy invaded as a celebrity. Obviously, it is designed to weed out the sensitive from the self-confident. How can one put on a show for others if one is self-conscious the entire time? I think those of us who might feel too badly would never get to the point of auditioning for one of those shows. I like watching Star Search for the new talent, and like it the best because it doesn't turn into a soap opera. Some of the comics they get just aren't funny, and I'm happy for them to be publicly humiliated so they will quit and I will never have to see or hear them again. If you think about it, isn't it a blessing that those without talent (usually) never make it to the top, and the ones who do make it are so self-confident because they worked their asses off to get there & aren't giving it up because someone doesn't like them. Cardinal rule: You can't please everybody. At the same time I feel sorry for the people who finally get their big chance and blow it, because that's a lot of hopes and dreams that are being flushed down the toilet while everyone watches. My personal favorite: karaoke. Everyone's there for the beer and to watch others make a fool of themselves, while they give entertainment to others by acting the fool as well. It's a low stress, low pressure environment that's a great confidence builder for public situations. I think part of college public speaking classes should include karaoke, to help with overcoming shyness. :0 ) LOL
