"Land of the Free, Home of the Brave"... my curvy butt! And what galls me the most is that while these infringements of our rights are blatant, and more horrendous violations against the population are uncovered (and quickly forgotten) almost daily, we demonstrate nothing but apathy about it until it is the glow of our own fields and homes being burned down that we are reading by. Until this latest story about Goth bashing surfaced, I saw a number of posts that could be boiled down to "Don't be paranoid, life just sucks" (read: "I don't see how that affects me").
Do the aristocracy need to grow horns and pointed tails and dress the police in Gestapo uniforms before we admit that they are out of control? How much more cartoonish do these violations of our basic civil liberties have to become before people can see what a mockery is made of the idea of justice in this country? When it hits close to home we are suddenly outraged, the rest of the time we plaster stars and stripes all over our pick'em up trucks and chant "God Bless America". Frankly, the people get the government they deserve, and if these anecdotes aren't enough for us to DEMAND substantive reform, then I'm afraid the people have it coming. If you are going to be a sheep, then you must expect to be fleeced every now and again.
