The prophets and soothsayers of yesterday are the madmen of today.
We ARE our only predators. Humans 99.9% of the time are responsible for human deaths through our machines, our human created viruses, our stupidity. One version of the "lord of the flies" was considered in the 80's regarding gang members. Just clear the streets and let the animals wipe themselves out.
We've not only outgrown our habitat, but our own power. We have weapons of MINDBLOWING porportion that could sterilize the ground we now stand on for EONS. We have cultivated germ warfare, cross bred viruses of the most virulent strain to produce horrid, disfiguring, agonizingly brutal and deadly superflus, ebola viruses, and anthrax that could kill within minutes. And what happens when AIDS is no longer an exclusively fluid communicable disease and mutates to become an airborne plague?
We then, dear, are DEAD MEAT.
We won't be top of the food chain any longer, we won't be the dominant species.
Any who survive will be in the midst of lord of the flies. There are always genetic variants within every species, sometimes noticeable, sometimes not until the shit hits the fan. There are select individuals in europe and I believe one or two in america that we know of that are actually genetically RESISTANT to the HIV virus. An infant here, I believe, several years ago, was born HIV + to an HIV + mother.
The child was tested regularly for full blown AIDS, and they were shocked to see that the amount of virus bodies in the infants blood had significantly dropped to almost NONE since her birth. The virus level was back to high the next month, then they tested her again and she had NO virus detectable in her system. The infant's immune system had somehow inutero developed and HIV defense, and her immune system continued to battle the virus for over a year, and WON, without drugs. To this day she is virus free.
I don't know if going back to savagery would make people happy. I personally would be sad to see all the GOOD things that civilized humanity has accomplished and created devolved back into a cave. All ancient history's secrets unresolved, all our potential for great things thrown away. I like my computer, my microwave, my kitchen stove, my fiance's beerstein collection. I'm comfortable with being a cushy non primal tribalistic girl in an apartment, with electric lights and not having to find my dinner in the dark or wait for something to find ME in the dark for dinner!
We're not all that bad, and as a whole, we may be irratic, out of controll, but we are idealistic and hopefull and helpfull good people who, if we get our act together, can live on if we make it through the next few scary decades.
