Ironically, last night when I wrote my previous responce, afterward a show came on where humans were bred to become the perfect soldier. Set, actually about 35 years from our present date. I assume it was a 1980s or 90s flick because it seemed to be that all of the things that happened in the beginning of the flick would be happening right now.
Yes, science fiction can be scary, and yes the dreams of the dreamers do make scientific reality. I just hope that some of the more, 'scary' alternatives do not become a reality. I do still believe that violence is hidden underneath every person. It could be shown in something as simple as a slap or a mock punch. Or even the thought of violence. Lets face it, we have ALL had violent tendancies at some point in time along the road. And if you deny it, then you are denying that you are human, or a beast of earth. In order to survive, there will always be violence. Violence could also be considered in words.
However, it is mostly idle threats that surface. Our insane humans are locked up, not killed or exiled as they would have been in the past. We have become a race who denys what makes us tick. Which could also explain why our population has grown so out of hand.
We have no natural predators anymore, we are, I suppose, at the top of the food chain. Mostly due to our scientific advancements. However, if we had no weopons or tools, as we did waaaaay back when. Then our population would not be nearly as large, and we would also use our fists and teeth again. We are, as all other animals, wepons, able to, in a pinch, use our entire bodies.
So in other words, yes, all we do is slap our convicts and insane people on the wrist. However if we did resort back to tribalism, and savagery, we might actually be more happy.
