A day without art (A little long)

Topic Rant

Out of the depths of grad school...finally something has pissed me off enough that I must let off some shmeng.

I live in Columbus, Ohio...as I may have mentioned before. Yes, it's the midwest and it pretty much sucks all the time. But we have these little stongholds in the city of relative coolness.
One of these strongholds is/used to be a neighborhood called the short north. This is a gallery and small shop district, inhabited mostly by students, artists, etc. It is also the home of one of the largest gay and lesbian communities in the midwest.

Well, as we all know annoying assed yuppie scum is magically drawn to anything they see as bohemian and hip (well, as long as there is a measure of safeness involved). So on the first Saturday of every month, all the galleries and shops in the Short North stay open late for the "Short North Gallery Hop (tm)". All the yuppies trickle out of the suburbs and into the big dark scary city to pretend they understand art, pretend they are stylish and cool, and marvel at the wonderful (trendy) "diversity" of our fair city. (Which works out well, since they only have to deal with it when it is fun and convient for them.)

As you can imagine, this event is a mess. And this weekend is extra special because it's THE SHORT NORTH HOLIDAY HOP! Buy up those christmas presents, folks! Only 25 more shopping days of mindless consumerism left!

Tomorrow also happens to be December 1st, a day designated as World Aids Day.....also known as A DAY WITHOUT ART.

What a slap in the face, from one "arts community" to another. I can't imagine how the largely gay and lesbian community feels about this event going on tomorrow. I pray that some of the galleries in the short north that I acutally respect will remain closed, or at least cover their art.

I hate this town.
