Paradise Lost
Category : Classics
Author : John Milton, John Leonard
ISBN (No Dashes) : 0140424261
|
|
Description : The best story I've read in a long time. Although I disagree with alot of the details and implications, it is an excellent story and isn't completely boring like the Divine Comedy. This is the story about the Fall of Humanity from the Garden of Eden and the war in Heaven. If possible, try to obtain the copy with John Martin's illustrations.

The Positronic Man
Category : Science Fiction
Author : Isaac Asimov
ISBN (No Dashes) : 0792720717
|
|
Description : One of Asimov's last published works. This is a novel based on a short story called "The Bicentennial Man" that introduced The Three Laws of Robotics to the world. It is an interesting looking into social psychology and a very possible future to come. Asimov has this wonderfully unique ability to project not only what the future may be like, but how people and society may act and think too. This book is wonderful on many levels, dealing with every layer of humanity, making it very universal regardless of it‘s futuristic setting. Also it actually makes lawyers seem exciting and pleasant

Red Dragon
Category : Typical Goth
Author : Thomas Harris
ISBN (No Dashes) : 0385319673
|
|
Description : The first in a great trilogy of novels by Thomas Harris. Harris has the most exquisite character development I have ever come across. His writing is tasteful, yet all the same shameless; nothing is hidden from the reader. The vast knowledge of sociology and psychology is presented in a fashion that does not insult the reader's obviously lesser knowledge, and invites them to play in this strange intellectual realm. The content is flawless and will continue to both disturb you and make you giggle throughout the novel. The use of symbology, in conjunction with William Blake, is beautiful. Overall he truly exposes the whole spectrum of human cruelty and kindness in a way it’s hard to believe one man, without multiple personalities, wrote this.
-Oh, and it’s about serial killers.
“Francis Dolarhyde is my favorite villain. He has a reason for everything.” -Cashmere

The 120 Days of Sodom and Other Writings
Category : Classics
Author : Marquis Sade
ISBN (No Dashes) : 0802130127
|
|
Description : To me, the Marquis De Sade is one of the most disturbing and demented entities I have ever come across. His talent of expression and writing has however made him one of the most beautiful all the same. I cannot describe the depth that is the Marquis; that can only be experienced by reading. This selection is by far his most violent and stirring, thus I recommend it because it is his most vivid account. I do warn that this is not a book to take lightly. This is not a toy, or a game; it should not be taken literally, nor enacted. But if you want to experience a psychological sensation that only the worst nightmares bring, then I recommend it to you. Don’t get off your meds- remember this is fiction.

Description : Herman Melville's peerless allegorical masterpiece is the epic saga of the fanatical Captain Ahab, who swears vengeance on the mammoth white whale that has crippled him. Often considered to be the Great American Novel, Moby-Dick is at once a starkly realistic story of whaling, a romance of unusual adventure, and a searing drama of heroic courage, moral conflict, and mad obsession. It is world-renowned as the greatest sea story ever told.

The Blood Countess: A Novel
Category : Typical Goth
Author : Andrei Codrescu
ISBN (No Dashes) : 0440221919
|
|
Description : From Amazon:
"A folk belief that on bitter cold nights the stars come down to mate with wolves. An adolescent boy, sexually aroused by an "iron maiden" torture device. The smell of paprika and boiled chicken served with Tokay wine. These and other vivid images of Hungary in the 16th century, and Hungary today, swirl together amid scenes of luxury and barbarity and talk of Martin Luther's Christianity and post-Communist ideals in this gloriously gruesome novel inspired by the life of Countess Elizabeth Bathory. They say she killed 650 virgin girls in order to rejuvenate herself with their blood."
This is a fascinatingly well-written historical novel. A must read for anyone interested in historical instances of blood drinking.

Brave New World
Category : Classics
Author : Aldous Huxley
ISBN (No Dashes) : 0060929871
|
|
Description : "Community, Identity, Stability" is the motto of Aldous Huxley's utopian World State. Here everyone consumes daily grams of soma, to fight depression, babies are born in laboratories, and the most popular form of entertainment is a "Feelie," a movie that stimulates the senses of sight, hearing, and touch. Though there is no violence and everyone is provided for, Bernard Marx feels something is missing and senses his relationship with a young women has the potential to be much more than the confines of their existence allow. Huxley foreshadowed many of the practices and gadgets we take for granted today--let's hope the sterility and absence of individuality he predicted aren't yet to come.

Gardner's Art Through the Ages
Category : Other Stuff
Author : Richard Tansev, Fred S. Kleiner, Horst De LA Croix, Richard G. Tansey, Helen Gardner
ISBN (No Dashes) : 0155011413
|
|
Description : This is an excellent reference and study guide for all of you art history nerds out there. It is extensive in all the important areas of Western art history. It is a little skimpy on the rest of the world and their art, however this is understandable being that they want to keep the information in one book rather than a library. I have heard that this is one of the first editions of this text to include female artist.
To the authors: Welcome to the twenty first century; I highly recommend your book boys.

Diamond Throne
Category : Other Stuff
Author : David Eddings, Leigh Eddings
ISBN (No Dashes) : 0345367693
|
|
Description : The Diamond Throne is basically about a group of knights trying to save someone who had been poisoned. The victim happens to be the queen of Elenia, in a mass political plot to put her bastard cousin on the throne. As the Queen's Champion Sparhawk and his companions search for a cure, international church politics and a magic spell that kills the participant in order to sustain the Queen lend urgency to the quest. While this does follow a more traditional fantasy line of knights, wizards, and whatnot, the feel of the book and the relationships between the people make the world believable. Each character has been specifically brought to light to portray them as people, and few characters are represented as completely good or completely evil. The basic storyline is easy to follow and makes a quick read, the intricacies of each character make it interesting. The first book in the Elenium trilogy, it is about opening this world and seeing what is going on before the main story completely unfolds.
