I used to work for the Early Learning Center inside Debenhams. It was a
little concession, and the staff were Vicky (the manager), me, Charlie,
Laura and Vicki. Anyway, I said I "used" to work there. A couple of months
ago Debenhams decided to have a re-vamp of their upstairs (where our
concession was) and on the plans we were given we were just going to be
moving along one space. Then the plans changed and we weren't given copies
of the new ones.
So, people from head office came down, spoke to the Debenhams manager, and
the guy organised the move, and showed the plans that had been faxed
through to head office. We were moving to the other side of the floor,
according to them.
Okay, so Debenhams agrees, yes, we'll be going over there. A week later
almost all the departments are moved, and still no-one's talked to us to
arrange when we're moving, or who'll be putting up our shelves etc...
Wednesday we get a call from our area manager saying all the staff have to
be in friday morning, even if we're not rota'ed to work that day. They had
to talk to us. Sorry though, they don't know why. They said they didn't
know know why they were coming down to talk to us - wtf?
So, Friday comes and they drop the bombshell - Debenhams has said that we
have until Wednesday to pack up the department and haul ass outta there.
Bearing in mind we could do nothing until Monday, because we wouldn't be
able to get hold of cages / boxes / a truck to start carting the stuff over
to the core store. That's three days to pack up and move out £12,000 worth
of stock.
So, the stock goes over to the core store, where they also had one job
going. 16 hours a week. Laura didn't want it, Vicki and Charlie got jobs in
Debenhams, and Vicky would have been worse off taking the job than just
getting laid off. I got the job.
Vicky got to panic, as she was relying on a manager's wage, she was
pregnant, she has two kids already and a mortgage to pay off. No-one's
going to hire her while she's pregnant, and it'll be a good while after she
has the baby that she'll be able to go back to work.
Luckily, after speaking to the C.A.B. she found out that ELC have to pay
her maternity leave. It's a good thing she did contact the C.A.B. though,
because when she spoke to head office about it they firmly denied that they
had to pay her anything. When she called back to tell them what the C.A.B.
had said the response she got was along the lines of "Oh... yeah, I guess
so."
Anyway, not very fun times. ____________________ Do not fear death so much, but rather the inadequate life. |
