Seeing as how there had been a change of popes recently (something that
doesn't happen extremely often) I would have though that the religion
section would have been thriving on this sight, but no. I was just
wondering why no one wanted to talk about it.

because it's the pope, he was old, and an old sick man finally kicking the
can it isn't very suprising, let alone interesting.
Besides, we all know he's german, an ex hitler youth, and chose the name of
the pope that reigned and aided the nazi party between WWI and II.
Besides, my grampa already thinks catholics (those goddamned idolotors) are
going to burn in hell and are evil, so it's old hat to that old man. I
forgot to listen to art bell for wacky nostrodamus shit last night, I
figured he'd be ALL over that. Anyone know if they did something on him?

cecause, most of us are not really interested in the catholic church, the
aged and dedcrepit institution stands like a building long condemned and
something should be done about it... but I don't have the energy to
conceptualise, let alone realise that kind of action ____________________ The earth turns on a tilted axis - just doing the best it can.

I knew any talk of the church wouldn't be in a positive direction. It
seldom is. But I was just wondering because usually when there is a reason
to complain someone on this sight seems to be all over it. ____________________ fucking classy. |

Why not? We have xians here of all varieties, and there are some pleasant
things about the whole church thing. But unfortunately, the pope is a
snooze, and the catholic church is a circus nobody wishes to hear about
anymore. Afterall, there are only so many dirty old preist jokes in
circulation. ____________________ Trapped in time. Surrounded by evil. Low on gas. |

that is as positive as I get about any organised religion... it has nothing
to do with the current incarnation of the holy mother church... I jsut do
not feel spirituality should be regulated and as such have a bad view of
all religious institutions... if it makes any difference, that was quite
pleasant compared to most of my narrative about religion ____________________ The earth turns on a tilted axis - just doing the best it can.

Like a fuckin doorknob, yo. So, do they give those old dead guy robes and
fancery to the next schmuck in line or do they give him new gear? That'd
wierd me out a bit, but then that religion is founded on the back of a long
suffering dead guy. The shroud of Turin would make a wicked awesome toga. ____________________ Trapped in time. Surrounded by evil. Low on gas. |

I think the Pope is like Kenny on Southpark...one dies and another one pops
up to replace it. I just don't know why they give the new Pope a new
name...I mean they don't give the new Kenny a new name each episode. ____________________ "When choosing between two evils, I always like to try the one I've never

That's because the Schivo case involved "drama" that everyone wanted to put
their two cents in about, and it was "do we keep her alive or do we not".
Now if the pope was brain damaged and in a "vegetative state" and the
public wanted to keep him alive but the vatican wanted to pull his tubes,
THEN it would have been mad crazy hooplah. But like I said, an old sick
man dying in his sleep, nothing to do, no opinions on the matter because
there are no decisions to be made. And Terri Schivo is dead now too, so
case closed on both. ____________________ Trapped in time. Surrounded by evil. Low on gas. |

Bettie - Of course the new pope was in the Hitler Jungen. It was
compulsory, children in their early teens were hung and shot for not
joining. When he then joined the army (again compulsory) he deserted as he
disagreed with the regime.
He also did not choose the name of the interwar pope. He took the name
Benedict, the inter war pope was Pious XI, there is no evidence to suggest
that he aided or abetted the Nazis and in fact released the papal
pronouncement 'Mit brennender sorge' (the spelling on that is crap but i
cant be bothered to look it up) which means something like 'With burning
sorrow' which denounced the rise of Hitler. Eugenio Pacelli, Pope Pious
XII, was the pope associated with the Nazis and really did quite a lot
against them, although his hands were pretty much tied. The catholic church
in and around Rome did an awful lot to help the jews when they could
(according to friar Peter Gumbell) although their work had really to be in
secret. Newspaper articles of the time in both Britain and America praised
the pope for his actions against Hitler. The main reason that we have no
evidence of any actions alledgedly carried out by Pacelli (pious XII) is
that he could not afford to leave a paper trail in the event of Mussolini's
fascists storming the Vatican, which was a very real worry to the pope. Had
he made any explicit pronouncement against Nazism the power would probably
have been shut off to vatican city by Mussolini's government during the
broadcast, as Hitler's staunchest allies Mussolini is unlikely to have
allowed any form of anti-Hitler pronouncement as this would have shaken the
foundation of his own power in the very atholicised Italian community. I
think it was post 1950 or even later that the Pacelli bashing started and a
number of incompletely researched, badly argued books have been released
quite recently on the subject. Notably Goldhagen's 'A moral reckoning' and
Cornwell's 'Hitler's pope.' From which I originally learned some of the
material given above. Further citations can be given if necessary. ____________________ Eritis sicut Deus scientes bonum et malum.

Actually, I'll have to concur with wormwood. The last pope WAS a remarkable
man, and aside from all that previously mentioned stuff, I do believe he
spent some time with the buddhists...not as a catholic representative, but
as a monk. Leastways, this is what I have heard.
In any case, that doesn't mean we can't have all sorts of mean fun at his
dead expense.
In fact...it DEMANDS us to have mean fun at his expense, and lots of it. ____________________ In the valley of the Goats, the Goat Fucker is King |
