Hello, everyone. I know I haven't been around much. I have been pretty
busy with my 4 rugrats with no time to chat. I came across something that
really made my blood boil 3 days ago and I would like to share it with
everyone. You do not have to be a vegetarian or an animal rights activist
by nature for this to piss you off. The fact is this practice is inhumane
and needs to stop. I am trying to get the word out there for those that may
not have heard so others can get involved because something needs to be
done.
Here's the website for more info check out:

The website I posted in the previous post is sponsored by the Humane
Society of the United States. It has alot of information concerning what
the average person can do to stop the hunt. There is a pledge form to
boycott all Canadian seafood to start with. Then there is a section where
you can write your Senators about Senator Carl Levin's (D-MI)Senate
Resolution 33 condemning Canada's seal hunt.
The reason Canada proposed to start this massive seal hunt is because in
2003 they were forced to close thier cod fishery. They blamed the fact that
there was not enough cod in the waters on the harp seals. Cod makes up only
3% of the harp seals diet. The only ones to blame on the short supply of
cod was the industrial fishing which destroyed the cod population and upset
the eco system in the area in which the ships were fishing. This is how the
Canadian Government justifies the seal hunt. The harp seals are their
scapegoat.
Most of the seals killed are between the ages of 12 days and 3 mos. They
are brutally clubbed to death with hakipiks that have sharp hooks on them.
The problem with this method of killing is that most of the time the seals
are not dead when it is time to skin them. a couple of years ago
veterinarians observed the hunts and found in 42% of cases that the seals
were skinned while alive and conscious. This is why this thing has to be
shut down for good. It is still going on.
The Humane Society of the United States is working with Greenpeace and a
number of other of animal rights groups on a 3 year campaign to get the
seal hunt to stop for good. The Canadian government claims that the seals
are overpopulating and eating all of the fish. This isn't true. They have
been hunting seals since 1996. The only reason it is such an issue now is
because this is the largest hunt they have issued in years. The people who
are doing the hunting are fisherman. It is an off season activity for them.
That is why it is so important to boycott all Canadian seafood and try to
get restaurants to do the same. Most of Canada's seafood comes to the
United States. If Americans refuse to buy their seafood maybe then they
will get the message that we do not approve of what they are doing and will
not do business with them until they stop hunting seals for good.

Not to sound like a wet blanket or a bitch, but pardon me. Number one,
thank you for bringing this up, I wish more people were concerned about
cruel hunting methods and "scapegoating" natural predators for their woes.
Perhaps if we ourselves didn't wipe out food sources for these animals,
they wouldn't be competeing for food with US.
Secondly, this is just one of the zillion cruel and inhumane practices that
go on every day, but since seal cubs are darling and fuzzy and look
fantastic on calendars, it's a huge cruel deal. Oh the HUMANITY!! They're
so cute and fuzzy and helpless and people are so MEAN! Well, about 1/8of
the hogs slaughtered for industry in the US (which equal out to millions
yearly) are conscious when they are lowered into boiling vats of water to
soften their skins for peeling, so they are literally stunned to imobility
and scalded to death, the same amount of cows are conscious during having
their tails and feet chopped off and die DURING or after the skinning
process, and in animal testing laboratories or in companies that euthenise
and preserve animals for biology classes and testing facilities have a
disgusting ratio of cats and other animals that were not gassed to death,
but died during the process of having their body fluids replaced with
formaldehyde. Or perhaps when people stop the March of Dimes from
mutilating infant animals by brain damaging or organ damaging perfectly
healthy animals while they're conscious and alert so they can then try to
unsucessfully UNdamage them, all for the sake of "humanity".
Animal cruelty and exploit and scapegoated murder is older than the greek
arenas decimating local animal pouplations for sport. I'm glad you've
picked a cause, but at the same time, I wish people would make that big of
a deal over the NON cute fuzzy helpless animals, the ones that don't look
good on calendars and greeting cards, that don't have big doe eyes and soft
soft fur.....attractiveness doesn't equal ability to feel pain or regulate
the right to live and not be murdered outside the normal scope of nature,
as in hunter vs. hunted, both with an equal ration of success or failure at
surviving or making a meal out of something else.
I hope you realise this for what it is, a blanket statement about overall
human cruelty every single day, and about peoples superficial biases
determining what gets to suffer and what doesnt based on "how would this
feel sitting on my lap and doing little ammusing things under my
supervision" , not a personal attack. It is just supremely irritating to
me, and a very sore spot. ____________________ Trapped in time. Surrounded by evil. Low on gas. |

Bettie, you forgot to mention how sexy seals are when they are pressed into
a bridget bardot. That always makes me want to save something. I think we
shoudl press more things into her. ____________________ It's like kegel exercises for your throat.~Monolycus |

Let me just start by saying first that you are preaching to the choir. I am
against the fur trade. PERIOD. This has nothng to do with the level of
cuteness of ones species at all it has to do with the number and speed of
senseless deaths by cruel means inflicted on defenseless babies. I know
alot of other issues exist outside of this issue. Other issues that require
just as much attention and just as much importance. I am aware of the cruel
wool trade in Australia and of the practice of mulesing. I am aware of the
cruel way in which down is aquired. I am aware that there are still jack
asses out there that think whaling is a fun sport. I am aware that many
mice have died so a bunch of old hags can have their botox injections. I
know all about IAMS and their little experiments on healthy dogs.
Let me say something about me. I come from Va Beach, VA. Peta
headquarters was in my back yard in Norfolk ,VA. I went to many a protest
for Peta while I was a teenager which was covered by local media in my
area. The head Honcho for Peta visited my high school in my junior year and
helped us start our own animal rights group in school which we called
C.A.R.E. SO I AM NO AMATEUR IN THIS AREA.
Actually I am well aware of all of the other cruel things going on with
other animals besides seals. The reason I felt the need to bring this to
everyone's attention is because this is one of the biggest seal hunts in
years. Sorry to offend for caring about that. I thought those that were
like minded might give a damn about the fact that over the next three years
Canada is planning to wipe out about 1 million seals. I am also one of
those who happen to care about other things going on where animal cruelty
is concerned. Since this is one of the largest seal hunts in years, well
don't you think instead of griping about what cause matters most to whom
that taking action matters more? I just wanted to really post a site that I
found to be helpful more than anything. The site I posted has instructions
as to what the average person can do to help. I thought that might be seen
as helpful. I surely didn't know I would get a lesson in animal rights. I
am well versed in this area and I assure you that this isn't necessary.
What is necessary is getting the word out about issues so those out there
who may not be informed can know what it is that they can do about it.

Here, let me point out something you didn't see. I'll make it easier for
you. Apparently you didn't read the end of the paragraph, you know the
part that stated:
quote: " I hope you
realise this for what it is, a blanket statement about overall human
cruelty every single day, and about peoples superficial biases
determining what gets to suffer and what doesnt based on "how would this
feel sitting on my lap and doing little ammusing things under my
supervision" , not a personal attack. "
OH! And here's another...
quote: "I'm glad you've
picked a cause"
and...
quote: I wish people
(ie: not you, see "not a personal attack") would make that big of
a deal over the NON cute fuzzy helpless animals
anything else I can help you read? But then again, as I was writing it, I
knew this was the reaction I was going to get, so eh.
Dom : I think we should press bridget bardot into a seal. Now THAT is
tres chic. Makes me want to be a lesbian seal.
Abbadon, I'm happy for you and your slippers, but I'm afraid I'm going to
have to confiscate them and return them to the wilds, so your feet shall
have to go cold. ____________________ Trapped in time. Surrounded by evil. Low on gas. |

Ok, IF I overreacted I apologize. I just want to make it clear that
although you made those statements you just stressed above. It still
APPEARED a little condescending whether you intentionally did so or not. I
took offense naturally because of my own intent. I just wanted to point out
to those who are not aware, what is going on right now. I hope you can
forgive the fact that I am pretty pissed off at the world right now for
what goes on out there. I had no right to take it out on you. I jumped the
gun, I'll admit. I am just really really upset about this whole thing and I
want to shut it down. I hate feeling so helpless. I hate it that America
still does business with a country that allows this type of hunt. Our
country has its own animal rights issues of our own but this is a major
scale murdering spree and I can't believe the world is allowing this to
happen.
I know Canada is another country. Not our country. The thing is there is a
demand for what they are doing. The fashion world is the main culprit. I
thought we had come alot further in this world, I thought designers had
come alot further than this. Apparently not. It pisses me off. All fur IS
FUCKING WRONG. Seals are not the only animals being skinned alive. Fur is a
cruel vanity. I hate it so much. I hate that animals have to suffer so much
so humans can have their skins, dammit we already have our own skin! ____________________

That's fine, I'm not even pissed off, so it's cool. I knew how it was
going to SOUND, so that's why I threw in the statements I highlighted.
I know how it feels to feel helpless when you feel strongly about it. K
that was a lot of "feels" but I just worked with someone who's a retard and
a bitch, I'm pissed off at my day and I've got a burst blood vessel on my
face because of it and frankly my brain is fried. Statement stands as
above. Ahem. Anyway...
A lot of things this country and others do, and what "we" support through
consumption and world politics is disgusting. And yes, I'm a consumer. I
have to drive 50 min to work, so everyone cross their fingers that I get
the job I'm gunning for locally so I don't have to anymore. As helpless as
you may feel, just do WHAT you can and WHEN you can, and at least know when
you go to bed at night that at least you can sleep with a partially clear
conscious and that you're at least trying. That is how I get through the
things that I find the hardest to deal with. I don't contribute, and that
HAS to be enough for me because I can't control the actions and beliefs of
others, and it wouldn't be right for me to do that if I could.
This proposed seal hunt does disgust me. The fact that perhaps they MIGHT
be "competeing" against us is even more sad, as the only reason they'd be
feeding on one specific type of food is because all other sources for them
have been wiped out by US. And that people think that this is ok,
rational. We wipe out most of their other food, they start going after
what WE want, and so we then kill them directly rather than wait for us to
starve them slowly. Makes sense to some people. That bothers me the
most.
But what really irks me is that people who are against fur will wear
leather, that so called "pet psychics" still eat meat, and that someone who
says they love all animals and would never hurt one will do so while eating
fried chicken. This country for the most part LIVES on second hand
cruelties thinking that their hands are clean, that just because they don't
kick their dog that they're righteous individuals in their gas hog SUV's
sitting in the drive through to burger king. I can respect someone who
knows the dues that come with eating the food they do, who at least KNOW,
instead of covering their ears going "don't tell me don't tell me!". My
neice wants to be a vetrenarian, and loves animals, so she won't eat
anything with bones in it because then it's "real". Someday when she's
grown I'll give her the low-down and dirty and let her make her own
decision, no matter how her line of reasoning bothers me now.
I'm gonna go get wasted and forget things suck. ____________________ Trapped in time. Surrounded by evil. Low on gas. |

So this baby seal walks into a club...
heh...heh heh.
it's funnier with a rimshot added afterwards.
I kind of want to start a save the Tuna Fish protest. They're so fucking
ugly and soulless...it'd be just as bad as those Sponser a Child
commercials. Just as pointless too...
We have to kill the baby seals before we die and reincarnate as fish and
they kill us...
