So I've been doing some research. Remember when good ole' Donnie Rumsfeild
said that there doesn't need to be a draft, and that it would weaken the
military anyway? Well, recently (Dec. 6th) the Department of Defense
quietly posted on their website, an article promoting hiring for local
draft boards. This of course got found out by a few people, and it got a
very pathetic ammount of media attention. The idea of instating a draft so
close to election day is a bad idea, so it is obvious why they would want
to be quiet. Infact, look at the web page now:
That's fuckin' quiet.
Notice anything creepy about it? What happened to the article about hiring
for the draft boards? Why do they need to hire for the local draft boards?

hmm...The site comes up, but with a message "File Not Found."

-(yes, it actually happened to me)
The front page holds the announcement starting with "Local Board
Volunteers" it was recently reworded to avoid scaring people according to a
number of news sources found by searching google news for information. The
fact that it is on the front page of the site lends a bit of credence that
this is more of a priority than the pre-election presidential committe
wants us to think.

And, quoting from another conversational thread where someone did a bit of
research:
quote:Bush readies DRAFT,
reduces time to activate SSS from 8 mos to 75
days!
This is the Selective Service plan for Fiscal Year 2004. Right now
the draft system is dormant and would take 7 or 8 months to gear up.
Bush is spending an additional $28 million next year to reduce that
to 75 days by March 31, 2005! Means the DRAFT would be ready to go
on June 15, 2005.
Strategic Objective 1.2: Ensure a mobilization infrastructure of 56
State Headquarters,
442 Area Offices and 1,980 Local Boards are operational within 75
days of an authorized
return to conscription.

You go conscientious, I go Canada...
Unless, of course, the hypothetical war was being fought for something
important.
But it doesn't look like -that's- gonna happen anytime soon.

Well, the Draft is going to probably be re-initialed...unless Colin Powell
decides to stay in the Administration and butt heads with Donald Rumsfeld.
However, he says he's not going to be in next time. Sooooo, those who are
worried, well...worry.
On the other hand, this is definitely an alert for people who do not vote
to actually vote if they want to change things.

definately contientious objector, and yes, vote, if you are 18 or over,
vote for what you think is right. don't let your vote just be lost by not
taking the initiative to go down to the booth. at least in that form, let
your voice be heard.

The Pentagon has said that they do not want a conscript army...they learned
their lesson after Vietnam that an army of volunteers is much more
effective. But the Bush administration is going to need more troops to
prosecute the other wars they have planned (they are talking about
extending the Afghan conflict into Pakistan, which would be really bad
since the Pakistanis really hate us...Osama was the most popular name for
boys born there in 2002), not to mention replacements for the troops whose
terms of service are coming to an end. I read a survey somewhere that a
very large portion (I want to say over 40% but I could be, and probably am,
wrong) of the troops in Iraq are not planning on renewing after their terms
are done.
The really shitty thing is that a lot of the loopholes that once existed
are now closed. The student deferments that kept Cheney out of the
military are now limited to one semester, and the National Guard that Dubya
hid in now gets sent overseas.
There is no way they would reinstate the draft in an election year, but the
fact that they are even taking the risk of gearing the machinery up again
indicates they probably intend to start relatively soon after the election
if Dubya wins. I am above draft age, but my brother is not...I know who
I'm voting for in the fall...anyone but Bush.
well... honestly... i don't think dubya has the sense to avoid it in an
election year... little known loophole... if you are in the service,
overseas, getting combat pay... they can kep you...
