I wish to make this a forum for nostalgic memories of times gone by, where
one can reflect on the past wthout any fear of being labeled as an old
fart. I'm sure its going to happen anyway, but until then, lets kick up
our wheelchairs and gather round the prunes!
The other day I was watching TV, a rare ocurrence in my life. The channel,
Noggin'. The show, The Adventures of Pete & Pete. *leans back in his
wicker rocking chair* It's been so long since I've seen an episode. So
anyway, here I was, watching one of the best shows from my youth, and I
still got all the jokes, and I had myself a righteous good old time. But
then the theme song came on. For those of you who don't know, the house
band for the show was called Polaris, which was really Miracle Legion minus
a member. My alzheimers seems to be kicking in right now... The theme
song is called "Hey Sandy." I thought it was just another catchy tune,
until I started doing research into the band, and the show. As it turns
out, the song is dedicated to Sandy Shuer, one of the people to die at the
Kent State shooting back in 1970. It was then that I realized that the
show wasn't exactly meant to be a kids show.
Well, now that the flashback is over, I guess I feel obligated now to say
that Polaris no longer exists, and the last Pete & Pete episode aired in
1995. I think I'm done now... Time for my mid-afternoon nap...

Times gone by and TV shows, eh? That can only lead me to one place:
Thundercats. I don't care what anyone says, no matter how many people try
to convert me to Transformerism, I will always remain a true and faithful
Thundercats fan. What was there not to love about this show? You had good
guys beating some ugly bad guy arse, robotic bears, people who looked like
cats, brute strength and agility and you had Wily Kit and Wily Kat!! I wish
that show still aired.

Since the topic is brought up, I saw "Masters of the Universe" on TNT,
featuring ex superstud Dolf Lundgren (formerly known as "The Russian" in
the Rocky movies..I think rocky II?), that ALSO featured Courtney Cox in
the worst role of her life. I was so down with He Man...I can only wonder
that if I knew what gay was when I was a kid, would I find it as homoerotic
as I do now?
Oh, and I got this bitchin atari joystick yesterday that has 10 games in
it. You plug it into your TV and the wonderful and brain hemmorage
inducing joy of Breakout, Adventure, Asteroid, Missile Attack, Circus Atari
(a more sadistic form of breakout) Pong, and others are brought to your TV.
No game console..that is how stoneage the technology was, that all those
games NOW fit into the JOYSTICK.
I'm gonna look for one that has riverraid and frogger and maybe
pacman....it's so awesome...

Was frogger the thing where you had to make the frog cross the lanes of
traffic wthout being squished, and the river (on the logs) without falling
in, or am I thinking of a different game? Either way I think my father had
that on his old computer an Amiga something-or-other. I liked that game.
Course Pacman just rules anyway...

A big kick in the old memory lane for me was watching a bit of the Muppet
Show with one of my classes one night.
I was having a particularly bad day teaching in Korea and didn't really
feel like dealing with my group of five years olds at six pm, and trying to
be happy and keep a smiling face, I thought, "what the hell, I have this
computer, maybe i can download a vid for them to watch for a few seconds so
I can maintain my calm." I looked and at some point in my infinate wisdeom
I had downloaded the eternal "Ma-nam-a-nah" sketch from the muppets. So I
sat there with my kids watching that little purple guy shake is orange head
while some freaked out ostriches said "Doot-do-di-do-doo" and I laughed
myself silly. We watched it there times, and oddly, I managed to turn it
into a teaching lesson by having the kids call out the directions the
little guy was running in.
At the same time it took me back to being about six myself and staying up?!
to watch the muppet show at like 8:30 at night. Man, those were the days. I
sort miss Jim Henson, the messed up muppetphile.

Wow, Frogger, Muppets, MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE! I feel much better now,
being here with all my cynical gaudy old codgers . I swear, at one
point in my life, I had all of the He-Man cartoons on tape. And what the
hell is an Intellivision?

guys rocked my world!
I love that little blue guy man, drove my parents nuts with that.

He-man and She-ra. And Conan the Barbarian!

Perhaps it was an intentional double affirmation of his manliness. He or
Man wouldn't have cut the buff, so to erase all doubt in the more inquiring
minds they were like "HE-MAN is ULTRA manly!"

Of course, as a child, He-Man wasn't sexist, he was damn cool! But I do
see your point. I wonder what his politically correct name would be?
(This forum has officially gotten off topic )

His politically correct name would be Non-gender-specific-Person, duh...
But I remember making fun of Conan... My brother and I would watch episodes
in the morning just to laugh at him in his skimpy little animal skin.

He-Man, Beastman, Skeletor...
Almost all the names were simply descriptions of the characters.
Strong guy just sounds stupid, which is why they always joked about it in
X-Factor. Speaking of Mutants, remember back when the X-Men were normal...

Those were the days weren't they? There was good animation, the storylines
held to the comic, oh, it hurts to remember, considering that new x-men
show out.....

HeMan sort of makes me think there was a 5th unknown member to the village
people....you have the Indian, the Leatherman, the Cop, the Construction
Worker...they must have left out the ambiguously homoerotic beast man from
another dimension because then they'd have to officially come out of the
closet en masse.
So they sent him, his fur speedo, and useless cross chest straps back to
beast man land where he wasn't seen again until 1985's "master of the
universe" uncovered his whereabouts. There should be a VH1's "Behind the
music" about that coming up shortly...
