For all of you anti military folks out there... i found this pamphlet at my
school that immediately made me crack up....
I'm not a musician, but as an artist I found this condescending and
moronic. If you have any common sense I hope you'll find it as outrageous
as I have.
I think you'll enjoy it as is;
"BE AN ARMY MUSICIAN
What it takes to be a player -
If you've already been studying music in college, or are already a working
musician and can pass a highly competitive audition, the Army Band Program
could offer great opportunities for your musical career.
If accepted into the program, you will first complete nine weeks of Basic
Combat Training (BCT) where you will learn the fundamentals of being a
soldier. After BCT, you'll get down to 24 weeks of serious study at the
School of Music in Norfolk, Virginia. Then you will be assigned to an Army
Band and will begin a challenging and rewarding schedule of training and
performing.
Be an artist without starving-
As a member of an Army Band, you will have steady work. You will also be
guaranteed educational opportunities, housing, income, and a sense of
security for yourself and your family that is difficult to duplicate in the
civilian world. Here are just a few of the benefits you can enjoy;
An advanced pay grade when you start.
Educational assistance to help pay for college courses during and after the
Army, and even to repay college loans.
Professional instruments and musical supplies provided by the Army.
Government-paid travel and moving expenses.
No-cost or low-cost medical and dental benefits for you and your family.
Room and board or housing and food allowances.
Discount shopping and commissary privileges for you and your family.
Outstanding retirement benefits.
30 days of paid vacation earned annually.
All in all, the Army offers some of the best career opportunities and
benefits available to professional musicians today."
That is just hillarious. Highschool "bandgeek" goes "military bandgeek"
*snort*
Who the fuck would join the ARMY to be in a MARCHING BAND?!
oi vei...

While not exactly pro-military myself, I'd still have to say that this
pamphlet doesn't exactly sound so bad.
This is actually a really nice alternative for musicians who aren't able to
employ themselves in the music industry right after high school. Yeah, the
bit where it explains how you'll be trained as a soldier sounds kind of
funny, but I look at it this way: it's money.
I also come from more of an artist background, but my friend and roommate
is a musician. We have both had to work some odd jobs in order to keep
ourselves alive while we continued school and honed our skills. Most of
them had nothing to do with art or music.
It looked like most of that pamphlet was talking about the financial
benefits and such. That, quite honestly, is all you would really need. I
mean, everyone already knows that the Army isn't a music program, but the
message it's trying to convey is that it's a good source of money as you're
training.
But, yeah... I can see why you would think it's funny.

Heh, speaking from a direct mil-background myself, I can tell you we never
really took military musicians that seriously... mean, sure, someone has to
play taps, but when the shi hits the fan, what are THEY gonna' do? Tootle
them to death or make the enemy cry with a really, REALLY sad song?
Sometimes the military can be fucking smart...other times, they rework a
definition of stupidity. Military Intelligence...heh.
But hey, if it puts food on the table...

Just remember the guys that played the trumpets of Jericho. If you someday
have to siege a city you're gonna miss musicians like that

I remember my days in a military band. Oh the fun. I guess its different in
England where we have history and a sense of national identity that does
not revolve around killing Arabs.

Hey military needs almost every occupation that the civilians do.
