| I don´t know maybe its just me But does it seem to you that people are
getting shorter? No I mean really I dont have anything better to do
sometimes than observe people cause well people are hillarious not to say
I´m not a person but if you watch other people they are funny...Anywho I
just noticed that all the freshmen at my high skool are unusually short.
Shorter than Most people in my grade when we were their age and they keep
on shrinking! I think we´re breeding elves! :grin: ____________________

Remember reading a theory that went the opposite way - people are actually
getting taller. This particular author calculated that the vikings would
have been appr. 30 cm tall... :grin: ____________________

| isn´t that less that 15 inches? Historicly, people were shorter. I think I
heard that it was mostly due to diferent diets. Take a look at your
average asian and compare to the average american. Rice makes smaller
people, hamburgers make bigger people(no offense to people who like rice,
asians, or anybody else. Besides, that was the example given on TV). But
30cm is pushing the rediculous in the shortness scale. ____________________

In anthropology, the tendency of a population to become taller on average
as their diets improve (I´d say "change") with industrialization and
incorporation into the so-called "first world" (another term I cringe at
using) is called the Secular Trend. Americans went through this at the
beginning of the 20th century. We are already as tall (and in many cases
as fat) as our population deme is going to get. Japan is at the tail end
of the phenomenon currently and it is just beginning in parts of rural
China as they are becoming what the Frito-Lay corporation would call
"economically active" (read: ready to be fleeced).
High school freshman aren´t getting shorter... you have gotten taller. I
am, I was, I will be

must have been a painfull birth. Unless, that is, you are only 30cm tall.
But that would make you a viking, and those pointy helmets and swords would
also make for a painfull birth.

You´re right mono...I stopped growing in seventh grade...right at an
amazing and towering height of 5´2"!! and by the time I was a junior in
highschool all I could think was "man, why´re they all so little?"
When more than half of them in reality were taller than me. I think it´s
perspective, and even when I see a senior in highschool anymore I´m like
"man, why´re they all so little?"
I´m a friggin midget, I´m used to it. Pants in my size will be eternally
WAY too long, shelves will never be low enough for me to reach without
climbing on counters, and there will never be a seat adjustment close
enough to the peddles in my car.
You will only ever see the top of a head over the steeringwheel when I
drive up.
I just hope I don´t get any smaller...gonna hafta stop falling asleep in
the dryer. ____________________

I hit my full adult height at the ripe old age of twelve. Being 5´9" was
impressive in the sixth grade... but eventually everyone else caught up and
passed me by.
And, Xoas...
Yeah, I would call it a painful birth. I burst, fully formed, from the
forehead of Zeus Pater. I figured that if I were going to go through any
sort of birth trauma, I was going to make it as unpleasant as possible for
everyone around me as well. :evil:

| No one knows pain like my mother.... i was born 11lbs and 6oz. 24´´
long...natural birth, no drugs. So thats why when i got hurt and cryed
when i was younger, my mom would throw peroxide all over slap a bandade a
put me back outside....sympothy, i think not. ____________________

| I knew one girl whose mother was having such a pain giving birth they gave
her a spinal... unfortunately they didn´t seal the gouge and all her spinal
fluid drained on to the bed, and they didn´t realize it was fluid instead
of sweat... she had splitting headaches whenever she moved for about 6
weeks after finally giving birth. ____________________

| ooooohh...you want reasons not to have kids. I used to walk around for
about a year with a pen and a small not pad and write down reasons not to
have kids as i saw it in real life. If anyone is interested it is about
300+ reasons long..heh..i have it backed up on disc some where. ____________________

Yeah, Morte´s just strange, I guess...
But anyway, *high five for being heavy babies* I was ten or eleven pounds
myself.
And now I´m skinny... what´s the deal with that?
But back to the topic, I do agree that we´re getting shorter... All these
little freshman running around, I wonder if I haven´t been demoted back to
elementary school. :roll:

Nah, people aren´t getting smaller...we´re bigger than ever before. Plus
it also depends on the race, and what part of the world you´re in. Genetic
throwbacks from migrating and needing to adapt to new weather. Caucasians
are usually pretty short to medium height, as the weather in europe at the
time we arrived was cold, brutal, and nasty. Being tall and dark skinned
was death, so those that survived became paler and stockier, the pale skin
not needing the amount of sunlight as dark skin (that it didn´t get in cold
northern climes) and being long and lanky and tall released too much body
heat..so we evolved shorter and stockier and more compact to keep our body
heat within.
Those that remained and migrated throughout africa from the basin got
taller or stayed the same height and color...dark skin being resistant to
harsh sunlight and the tall lanky height released more body heat and kept
them cool.
I´m speaking as a whole, as I´ve seen short africans and tall europeans,
but collectively the rules apply.
Size is also relative to the "fishbowl" theory...you know, the bigger the
aquarium the bigger the goldfish gets. You have island peoples that are
relatively small, as if they were to grow big they´d need more resources to
live and would outgrow their enviroment. Or you have peoples such as
samoans, certain native amercan tribes, and inuits (eskimos to the
politically incorrect) that are stocky, because their bodies are
genetically engineered to reserve as much energy (fat) for the harder
months when food is not as readily available.
Okay, that´s enough historical garbage for now.
They aren´t getting smaller, your perspective is getting skewed as the
years progress. It happens.
As for BABIES...my sisters were 8 and 9 lbs each, and I shot out last
(literally) at a nice and tiny 6lbs.
Pnemonia through the last three months of pregnancy makes for nice
miniature babies  I´m still the smallest of my sisters. As for my personality, I
blame it on the antibiotics  ____________________
