| This has been on my mind for quite a long time now... Why is being 18 years
old considered being adult... why in some countries in Europe you can buy
alcohol being only 16, while in the US it is far from that... what really
makes a person mature (itīs not the age for sure, as we can see here ...

our age lines are based on laws controling property. you actually are a
"full" adult until you are 25. and due to Reagan and Protestant ideas,
drink is too dangerous for people to handle until they have been married/or
marryiable for 5 years.
I guess the idea is that if you arent married by then, drink is the next
best thing.
maybe i should just go back to bed... ____________________

Yeah sure, Mr. President, maybe we arenīt mature enough to drink... But why
then does the US think weīre old enough to make good decisions for the
country?
Old enought to fight in a war? But not old enough to drink it off?
Old enough to smoke your ass off? But no old enough to enjoy alcohol with
it(the perfect complement to a cigarette....)?
Old enough to drive over people on the road, but not to drink to the point
of -appearing- stupid?
This country is messed up.

I heard something about your liver not being fully developed until you are
21, but I donīt remember the source, so it might be complete bullshit.
I think I also heard something about how the smoking age used to be higher,
but too many soldiers complained about how they were old enough to die for
their country, but not old enough to release stress through smoking. ____________________

No, I think G-man -wants- to lower it. Itīd be a plus for the economy (all
the tobacco farmers, beermakers, distillers, etc) but because of big
pressure groups (madd, for one), they have to say no to the drugs...
Old enough to have to wear pants, but not old enough to drink away your

| Shade, hate to differ, but the drinking age was 19, at least here in Ohio.
This I know because I was 18 when they passed the law and was two weeks too
young to get "grandfathered" in and be allowed to drink at 19 despite the
law. This mattered not, because I had been drinking since I was 13 and
riding my bicycle out of the city limits (dry town) to buy beer and pornos,
but the principle of the thing offended me. If you remember 16, maybe it
was up to the states to decide before that? Thatīs another funny issue,
the fact that each state is its own supreme authority and cannot actually
be told what to do by the federal government, technically. Seatbelt laws
are the same way though, federal making people do what it wants by
threatening economic punishment. Tobacco is next guys, smoke them while
theyīre legal. ____________________

I live in the UK and the legal age on drinking is 18 and smoking is 16
here. In Germany though itīs only 16 to drink beer / cider. (18 for
stronger spirits)
How strongly is the age limit law enforced in the USA? I know that here
most large stores will ask for ID but small corner shops almost never
bother. Is it like that in America too? ____________________

| It depends, if yoo live in New Orleans where they just this year changed
the drinking age to 21, nobody cards anybody. If, on the other hand, yoo
have the misfortune, as I do, to live in the sate thatīs suing all the
tobacco companies because itīs full of a bunch of puritans (all we need is
a pillary) then yoo get carded for nicotine gum. ____________________
i wanted to die, and then it progressed into wanting everyone else to

In Poland, where I happen to live, the drinking and smoking age is 18, but
nobody really cares. Iīve never had any problems about ID or that sor of
thing.
In other European countires, like Holland, the age is 16... maybe Europe is
a bit more liberal the the US. ____________________

I donīt know how easy it is, personally, but I know that thereīs always a
sympathetic īadultī to get you some liquor for a party or such.
And as the saying goes: Its easier to get pot than it is to get alcohol.
But yeah, Europes a hell of a lot more liberal... Your tv stations have
stripping game shows... People over here complain if someone -mentions- a
breast. You guys get to drive on the wrong side of the road, even!

| Absinthe is reason enough to leave the states. Most places I have seen
lately card and enforce 100% since the police started sending secret
shoppers in to try and catch the stores selling to underage. Itīs a rather
serious fine and possible loss of licence to sell if stores are caught, so
they go along with it. Once I got carded for carbonated grape juice, sold
in a wine bottle, and when I explained that it was not wine they said they
didnīt care, I had to be 18 to buy carbonated grape juice. When we were
kids there were cigarette machines and our parents would send us downtown
to get some for them, letting us keep the quarter left over from the dollar
they gave us. The stores would sell to you (we were 8 years old or so) if
you told them that an adult sent you. Condoms you had to show ID though. ____________________

And we also found out, that if you walk in to the club with me, and flash
your ID, the bouncers donīt check, they just stamp your hand. I donīt know
if thatīs because I have befriended them, or if they just expect anybody
walking into the club with me to be an alcoholic... ____________________
Sometimes I dream about dinosaurs shopping for cargo shorts at the Gap.
Does that make me a bad person?

Hey now, the US does too have gay politicians and strange and dangerous
booze (everclear)! The drinking age in New Orleans changed about 6 years
ago. I was here when it changed.
At what age are you allowed to drive in the various countries in Europe? We
can drive at 15. ____________________

Thatīs the weird thing: in the US youīre allowed to drive, but not drink
and in Europe itīs the other way around (in some places). As if driving was
more dangerous then drinking, ot is it drinking than driving... ____________________
