allrighty,,
and here is a prime example of how the "war" is effecting our rights and the citizens. This is basically just another example of a shattered and broken first ammendment due to the patriot acts. This was in Des Moins Iowa at the Drake University where peace activists were arrested for a peaceful protest...(nothing strange yet,) However, The government has gone in and subpoenad the protestors and put a ban on the administrators or professors from talking about it. ... I don't know how I could have missed this.

I smell conspiracy, can we say Red Scare?,,, Or at least a form thereof?

Well - with the Red Scare, people were scared. Commies were coming to kill us any day now, unless they pushed the button, or we pushed the button, or some other country pushed the button, or an accident happened and a nuke got launched accidentally and started everyone pushing the buttons.

With this, nobody's scared. I think that's the difference. With the cold war, nothing really happened, but it had EVERYONE scared shitless for decades (including me). With this, everyone's just shaking their heads going WTF?

I'm pretty sure I mentioned it elsewhere, but about a year ago I read a New york Times article IN PRAISE OF the late senator Joe McCarthy. While I agree with Devin that the majority are shaking the heads at this state-sanctioned idiocy, it's becoming less likely with each passing day that somebody is going to stand up and point out that the Emperor left his pantaloons at home. Even if the cost of all of this bad behaviour were only (!) measured in lives lost and civil liberties surrendered, it would be too high... but the truly outrageous part of all of this is that a staggering amount of money is coming out of your collective pockets to fund this nonsense. If people don't start banding together to put an end to it and stop clinging to the ankles of a demonstrably incompetent federal government to chase their phantoms away, I say they get what they deserve.

Hmmm. Now that I've posted that, I can hear the little red flag popping up next to my name in Poindexter's database over at DAARPA.

You starting to hear weird clicks when you talk on the phone too, Mono?

But yeah, since the communists aren't the threat they used to be (were they ever?), the government's got to invent another common enemy for us to fight. And, thanks to Mr. Bin Laden, they've got it. It isn't the communist infiltrators we have to be afraid of, its terrorists (or as Bush says: "tairsts") So now if you're not on the government's side, you're wit the terrorists. Isn't it funny how terrorists seem to work in the best interests of the government?

Ah well... I'm voting fuckin green this election... Damn the system!

Don't you mean Kerry? Dean's not going to win the nomination. After all, he's too 'angry' and 'liberal' to beat Bush.

(Sarcasm in that last sentence)

unfortunately, not that many people will be running against bush, though now that I am old enough, I will be voting as well, Got to do all the research and put my vote with the person who will be doing the most good in that emperors throne.

And it is true, we are LETTING bush do all of this to us, we are ALLOWING the patriot acts to go on without much of an outcry. Although, they did pass the majority of those when we had our backs turned during the aftermath of 911.

.. we have to stop being all talk and no action. we should do as many peace rallies and sit-ins as possible. TO let them know that it is not just a small faction that feels strongly in oposition towards Bush. We can't really be wishy-washy over anything, or we will be stuck with Bush for another 4 years.
I know that I for one am going to try to be more active with the PeaceWorks events. As long as I can feel as though I have done right. Then it should not matter what else happens. I just don't want the protests to be silenced or gagged up or those who are going for peace, put in jail and marked as terrorists because they don't believe in standing up for Bushes Actions, But going against, and standing up for peace.

(And Devin, ..:snickers: Sometimes when I think of the Red Scare and the Cold war, I think of Dr. Strange love..... "I'm just as sorry as you are Demetrie, really I am")

Boots: "...the government's got to invent another common enemy for us to fight"

Okay, okay, on track so far...

"...thanks to Mr. Bin Laden, they've got it"

I knew that cart wasn't going to stay behind the horse for long. Thanks to Mr. George Herbert Walker Bush during his tenure as director of the C.I.A. we have Monsieur Osama in the first place. Check some biographical information about Bin Laden, Helcmatyar and a brief history of Afghanistan in the 20th century. There haven't been any coincidences in a very long time.

"Isn't it funny how terrorsits seem to work in the best interests of the government?"

I genuinely hope you are not just now getting that... but at least you have the horse pulling the cart again. A more correct way to phrase it would be: Isn't it business as usual that "terrorists" further the interests of the richest governments in the world?

As for the "phone clicks" aside... my DAARPA comment was neither conflated nor paranoid. Do some reading about the Total Information Awareness project and get back to me. Preferably by post or dead drop.

BlueLinn: You're in luck. This Sunday there's a massive Vigil for Peace (anniversary against the Iraq war) thing going on. Check out what people are doing in your area.

Mono: "I genuinely hope you are not just now getting that... " Sorry to deflate any high opinions you had of me, but yeah, its only recently that I noticed it.

And I'll look up that stuff... I love twisted government ploys...

And, just to confuscate the g-men:

I personally do not like Howard Dean for he did appear too liberal at first. I stopped paying attention to him over a month ago, though. The person I was going to vote for dropped out, so I'll have to pout in my corner then look at what is to come next. On top of that, I thought that Dean got ticked too easily after the Iowa thing, but he calmed down after that one.

A lot of liberals attack me for liking Wesley Clark, but at least I stuck to who I was supporting and did over 20 hours of community service for him before he made his fall...that is more than what most is willing to do for change. My biggest problem with Kerry is how he voted for the Iraqi war, but now says it's the wrong war (then again, a lot of people did)...I also do not condone some things he did as a senator. John Edwards is a lawyer so I'm a bit iffy on him, but some moderate Republicans actually like him so that might mean something.

Anyway, I'll see what will happen. I been paying attention to politics for I plan to vote soon, as well. I don't care for an anti-war individual, I just want someone who can fix our economy and finish what we started...then go to Osama Bin Laden.

I'm with Feral... finish what WHO started? The PNAC or the Familia Arbusto? You like funding a few billion of your favorite dollars towards what amounts to an international hostile takeover only with the added bonus of massive civilian casualties? You like it when "elected" officials wipe their asses with the law of the land and create unprecedented levels of global bad will against the U.S. of A.? You like Imperialism, colonialism, and domestic fascism? It's pretty easy to be pro-war when you and your loved ones are in no danger whatsoever... or at least fail to recognise the danger you are in. Just keep concentrating hard on that big, bad bin Laden the way you are supposed to and forget that he is, was and shall in the foreseeable future remain an American agent. Looks like P.T. Barnum was born way too early... these days it looks like there's one born every few seconds.

As for those people who voted for the war but now oppose it: I don't blame them. In the hysteria following 9/11, if you said anything even -remotely- against going to war, you'd have been blacklisted, tarred-and-feathered, and drove out of town. Your chances of reelection were nill if you didn't go with the flow, since all your constituents were paranoid about arab men flying planes into their houses.

So I don't blame them. However, I do give more kudos to the guys who had the balls to stand up for what they believed in.

i deisagree with that statement... while the older generations favored it... the younger did not... and there is a rising trend of young people excercising their right to vote... 9-11 was planned and if not planned... at least allowed to happen...

I know that I'm going to probably be condemned about my beliefs, but I think if we left Iraq now, someone else would take over and start doing some ethnic cleansing. *shrugs* I do not like the death of the soldiers, either, but I just have a feeling that something bad will happen if we do not clean up the mess before pulling out.

Just because I want the mess to be cleaned up first doesn't mean that I enjoy the thought of people dying. It'd just be irresponsible to leave the mess there without straightening it out.

I do not like war, either, but there's bound to be some when the other side isn't willing to compromise...and I'm not talking about this one either.

As far as Bin Laden being an "American Agent"...

Who bombed the WTC in 1998? Osama bin Laden...Who bombed the USS Stark? Again, Osama Bin Laden. This was a several years before 9/11...I seriously doubt that Bin Laden is validly an American Agent after those incidents. War against Bin Laden, if we can find him, is a necessary evil.

*sigh* I know you guys mean for good...but I have an opinion too, though some may be controversial to your's. I just noticed too much that a lot of people on this site will jump on others for being prejudice, yet it's free game when it comes to Republicans. I understand that a lot of people want peace...even I do to an extent, but I do not think there will ever be a time with no war period...it's part of human nature...

Who made my train run late...? Osama bin Laden. Who took the cookie from the cookie jar...? Osama bin Laden. Who put the spider on my bedroom wall...? Osama bin Laden. I'll tell you, he's just a busy, busy little guy. The man got to New York City in 1998 and Yemen in 2000 and blew himself up both times! He's everywhere you want to be! I can see now why we need to spend so much time finding this guy.

And you've really opened up my eyes about this Iraq thing... of course we have to clean it up because, goodness knows, Americans are the only ones who know how to run everyone else's countries for them. Just think of how terrible it would be if the United States didn't step in to every autonomous nation on the face of the Earth to make sure they were doing things "right". Why, if we weren't busy killing them, they might just kill one another!

I can see now that I haven't spent enough time factoring a priori misconceptions into my arguments, and should spend less time dealing with facts. Boy, is my face ever red.

You know, maybe you're right...maybe we should just let those people fend for their selves and pull out...maybe we should let those warlords in their take over and start their ethnic cleansing. For all I know, those people in there probably deserve it since they do not know how to run their selves. Sounds like a very humane thing to do, but I'm not a humanitarian. They could have a strong economy if they learned how to control their selves and make use of the oil. Oh well. Shall they destroy their selves, may the fittest survive...

If you want my opinion though, on after we pull out... right when the chaos spreads, everyone will be screaming at us to do something about it. If you ask me, while I sometimes think we stick our noses in other people's businesses, people will complain when we do not do it, as well. Everyone is always complaining about us...granted, they can, but I can still feel like they're just going to complain no matter what.

Whenever we pull out from a region filled with revolts, people whine at us for doing nothing. Every time we send in "peacekeepers" to mellow down conflict, people still have problems. Oh well. We're not perfect, but I'd rather live here than most places. At least here I can speak my opinion and even do work for a cause, not to mention vote for one.

Anyway, it seems like I annoy certain people with my political discussions so I'll just slow down on it, maybe even stop. I'm getting the vibe that I am.

Anya: Don't stop... Its great to have someone around to disagree with. Otherwise these forums would degrade into low-level ranting about the leader with everyone grunting in agreement. But with you, we gotta make our arguments smart.

Isn't it kinda funny that during the cold war we fought hard to keep a country (russia/china) from imposing its political system on other countries, and now that its over, we're imposing -our- system on others.
Sure, they may do a lot of things that appear weird or even inhumane. But we're looking at them through American eyes. (or british, or whatever). They look at us and see how we're corporate slaves all our lives, and they don't see why they would want our 'democracy'. We look at their patriarchal oppression and low technology as inferior. Meanwhile, we only elect white male candidates to the high offices and pollute the world with our 'superior' technology.

So tell me, are we really doing them a favor?
