I'm watch'in Connan and he just said that a new study shows that 64% of Americans are over weight.
I know that usually information from late night comedy shows aren't really something you should take seriously but still, I wouldn't be surprised about it if were true.

What's your take on the weight issue of America?
Should politicians drop the "blame toxic entertainment for corrupting our children" act and actually tackle some RELEVANT issues such as this one? Maybe we should start getting pissed that there are constant commercials on children's networks constantly bombarding their viewers with advertisements of high sugary products?

Anya: Back when I actually had time and access to equipment, when I was in high school, I was a size 14, and a muscular 180 lbs. My ideal weight was 160.

Soooo, anyway, it's an endless cycle for some people. Stress produces cortisol, which contributes to weight gain, which causes more stress, which causes more cortisol, which causes more weight gain...etc, etc...

Some days, I would kill to look as good as I did back then. I had really nice shoulders and everything.

But then came college, and more stress, and a lot of work, and sexist fuckers who wouldn't let me use the weight room, and the freshman 15 every year...fun stuff.

It's been a slow decline, but I love the fact that my pants are looser now. :p

The big problem is, though, in order to lose weight, people have to find new ways of channelling stress, being able to afford healthy food, having the time to actually exercise, and being able to love themselves no matter what they look like. It really is an uphill battle of Sysiphus proportions.

Though I don't necessarily blame ALL people for putting weight on their self, there are some that have a problem with it. My mom is an example. In her younger years, my grandma used to starve and fast her so that she would reach the "ideal weight." This eventually contributed to her current diabetes for her body began to produce more sugar than needed. So not only does she have a weight problem, it's harder for her to fight it since she has arthritis and has to eat to keep her sugar levels in good condition.

I'm one of those few former obese people that worked their ass off to obtain a healthy weight. Nearly two years ago, I was over 210 lb and could barely fit a size 16 for most women's clothing. Now I'm 5'7 and 155 lb (maybe a few more or less) and down to the size range of 10 to 15 (those really small 15's)...my overall average size being 12's. I think I'm at a good weight - I'd be considered perfect a decade or so ago, but there are a few pounds I plan to lose. I'm happy at where I am at now, but would be even more happy to get down to about 145 lb. It was hard to get the determination to lose weight, but I did it. One method included a special diet, but for most of the time, it included watching what I ate.

I do think obesity is an issue, but if people want to be obese, that's fine. Some can't help it, but there are others I think who can. It's not easy, but it can be done.

It is also good to remember that being underweight is not necessarily any more healthy than being overweight, it's just more fashionable.

Okay, that's an interesting way to bump a topic to the top.

At any rate, I think I should just start out by saying I'm 5'5" and 270lbs, just so there's no confusion.

First of all, all but one member of my family is huge. On one side, we have huge, rawboned, strong people, and on the other, we have medium framed, full-figured people. I got my mother's figure on my father's massive body frame. I'm larger than most people, but it's all in proportion. For my size, I've had relatively few problems. It's only recently that I've started to have trouble with my feet and back, but most of that can be attributed to the extreme levesl of stress I'm enduring at this time.

Speaking of stress, the only time when I was fashionably thin was when I was a toddler and had worms. Other than that, and especially after I was sexually assaulted by a trusted relative, I became and remained a big gal. Fun, huh?

I bust my ass every day at my job, and I usually only eat one meal a day, and that's at work. Thanks to my dad's side of the family, I also have a gloriously slow metabolism.

And, contrary to popular belief, we fat people do not spend all fucking day eating. A lot of nurses I work with are as fat or fatter than I am, and we all bust our asses to get the work done, and we get very few breaks, if any at all. I make very little money, and, as Wolf so aptly pointed out, the healthy food is not the inexpensive food. It's pretty sad when it costs $3 to get a bag of carrots, but it's 88 cents for a bag of greasy potato chips. My family was very poor growing up, and food was scarce, so we ate what we could afford....mainly a lot of rice and potatoes and peanut butter.

Fortunately for me, I like to walk and dance, and my abdominal muscles and legs love me for it. I also do repetitive lifting of heavy charts day in and day out, so my arms get quite a workout as well.

True, we could all benefit from a little more activity and less eating of unhealthy foods; however, we could also benefit from learning a little more sensitivity, and a little more effort to try to see things from another person's perspective without making sweeping generalizations about one particular group. Surely our imaginations aren't that limited.

I recently watched an episode of Jenny Jones, while I was taking care of my grandmother, which had toddlers and young children weighing upwards of 100 pounds. There was a two year old boy who weighed 150 pounds. His diet included two breakfasts where he would eat 4 pancakes, half a pot of grits, 3 glasses of milk, 5 peices of sausage, all for the first breakfast. For the second he would eat 2 bowls of cereal and 5 glasses of juice along with 2 pieces of toast. For lunch he would eat 2 double cheeseburgers, a large order of fries, and 3 cokes from McDonalds. For dinner he would eat 1 and a half pork chops and so much more food along with snacks throughout the day.

Obviously it is the parents fault in this situation along with the parents of the other obese children. It is very easy to see that this is why so many children are ending up with type 2 diabetes.

This sickens me. I cannot say that I have the healthiest diet in the world, but I do not eat nearly that much in 5 days. I don't even eat McDonalds or other fast foods unless I must. I find it all fattening and disgusting. I am not looking forward to forcing myself into an early heart attack.

The study is, from my knowledge, correct.
Human beings need a certain amount of exercise and food a day. The modern American human lifestyle does not fit into the template that evolution has made for us. The long strenuous hunt for food has turned to the drive through. We eat what we like, because we are capable and can choose. However, our diet does not usually reflect our needs. Sugars and fats are at an all time high in the human diet. Exercise is not met to our bodily standards. Our bodies simply try to reach an equilibrium with our environment and our activity, thus our muscles atrophy and turn to fat.
Generalized standards are not however the answer to all problems, as Callei pointed out, some people are genetically disposed to certain shapes and weights and are appropriate for their genes. But it is important to understand yourself and what your body composition should be. Many people cannot do this on their own because their personal view of what they should be like can be too idealistic, and they do not hold realistic goals- but everyone can be at a healthier state with a little initiative. People should be exercising about 3 to 5 times a week at minimum for at least 20 minutes per day they do it. Find something you like to do, like swimming or yoga. And the diet should not consist of Mac and Cheese, a pile of meat soaked in butter and a beer. For proper food tips, ask your local hippie what to eat.
Personally, I know what is appropriate for my shape and size of my body. I am 6 foot tall, and currently 170 pounds. I expect to gain weight as I gain muscle mass- but I have an appropriate body image in mind. I do not expect to have six pack abs ever. Why? Like 50% of the population, I have a natural fat pad over my abdominal muscles. They can be toned, and strong, but they will never be ripping and defined. Personally, I don’t care about that stuff, all I want to be is healthy. Body image is a side effect of my good health, not a main goal; I think that’s where success will lie with most people.
The average American is overweight and in poor health. I believe this is due to unrealistic image ideals and lifestyle that can be changed by a state of mind. Think of good health before you think of good body image. The first will cause the latter.

It blows to be fat but what about the skinny. I'm six foot four, and I weigh 125 pounds. Its fucking disgusting. People thing I'm ugly, I can't lift shit or fight. I'm repulsed by myself in the mirror. The problem isn't fat or skinny or perfect its being comfortable with yourself. If everyone had positive body image (impossible considering how woman are bombarded with images of 120 pound models with D cups as the right way to look, and men are told to have washboard abs and bend steel with there biceps) we'd all be cool. And as for the health of an obese person, trust me I'd rather die fat and happy with a stomach full of sushi and steak, with clogged arteries, than die a retched bean pole living on tofu. ( but I do love those veggie burgers so much)

What a fine kettle you've all boiled up.

Monolycus you've probably made the most realistic and realitive statments, and for that I thank you. I read your comments and wept.

I'm a fat girl. I've my own issues with it. I've been a fat girl for a long time, but not always. Most of the time I have no problems with it. Then there are weeks on end where all I can think about is being a fat girl and what I'm going to do about it. Am I lazy? Sure, I work ten hours a day, go to the gym for an hour in the morning, and walk a mile up hill to my apartment each night. So I'm lazy, and fat.

Do I eat to much, yeah, I manage to squeeze in one vegitarian meal a day, and I snack on fruits and veggies and occasionally backed potato biscuits and squid. So yeah, I'm definately overeating.

Am I still a fat girl. Yep. Do I have issues about it. You bet your tiny little asses I do. However, does it make my life less meaningful. No, I don't think it does. Regardless of body shape type and classification, you are the person you are based a hell of allot more on what you do, how you live, and how you judge others than whether or not you have the good fortune to be fat or thin.

That goes just as much for the person who eats the caloric intake of Ethiopa and lays in bed all day, as it does for the treadmill running, iron pumping goths who spend all day checking their pecks in the mirror.

Regardless of how much of an epidemic it is, I rarely ever see any thin people or fat people really trying to make much of a difference. Mostly it's just condemnation or suggestions or allot of mindless chatter. Very rarely is there every any real understanding or direction to us fat people that will help us to get well. And most of the time the utter shit that poors from the mouth makes a regular old fat person want to go eat a cookie.

Rather than be surprised and disgusted about it, AloneS, why don't you head to the neighborhood Y and go swimming with some kids, or maybe befriend that fat kid in the corner no one wants to play with and share you weights. Make a freaking difference rather than bitch.

And trust me, sitting on my inordanately large ass bitching on this message board is not helping me burn any calories, but spending my days with kids educating them about overeating and doing my best to set an example (as a fat person they don't want to end up as) is a far better deal. It's not perfect, but it's what I can do.

I know most of you who have been criticizing fat people don't mean to insult or belittle people. But I don't think you understand being overweight from the inside. There is far more to it than just genetics or just disgusting self-indulgence. Even when you add parental neglect into the picture, you still don't have it all.

I don't think you understand how much emotions have to do with it. I don't think you understand the power of the spiral that drags weight ever higher and higher.

I gained weight, a lot of weight, during High School and on until I was 21. I was fat. I was also miserable. I had nothing to do - no drivers liscence, no social life, nothing. I wasn't coordinated enough for sports. I didn't have anywhere to swim, anywhere to work out (beyond gym class, where I was naturally neglected in favor of the bright and shining stars of the athletic teams.) My family life sucked, horribly. I had nothing to do with my time BUT eat.

And of course, every pound added made it that much harder to excersize, and made me that much more miserable. I simply did not have the emotional strength to fight the downward slide. I was a girl, alone, with no one who gave a damn. It sounds like a cliche, but that's only because it's way too common.

You may say, I went through tough things, too, and I didn't get fat. Well, maybe you were blessed with a strong metabolism. Maybe you had opportunities to remain active that I didn't have. Maybe you had more distractions than I did. Something more than curling up with a book and something to munch on in the privacy of your messy room.

There are so many reasons why people get fat. And not all of them are to be blamed on the overweight person. Most of these people are the way they are because of things they did when they were younger, like me when I was thirteen. Yes, perhaps I should have dealt with my emotions in a more constructive way than resorting to food. But I was fucking 13! I had no one to help me! Sure I knew that I shouldn't be eating. But I knew no other way to deal with my pain and boredom, and they needed to be dealt with somehow!

The only reason I ever ended up losing the weight was because I started a relationship that turned out to be more stressful than even my fucked up childhood. It stressed me to the point that I would be in pain from hunger, but unable to eat more than a few bites at a time. I ended up sick. But I ended up thinner, too.

Maybe eventually I would have found a way to lose the weight in a more heathy manner. Still, it would have taken a huge amount of will power. It's not a sort of thing where you can swim for a few days and lose it all. It would mean finding an activity that I COULD do at that weight, something that I enjoyed. It would mean changing a life-style that I had supported for over a decade. It would mean finding a way to keep myself motivated until the weight was lost, and then remain vigilant to keep it off. It would have been extremely difficult.

I have the greatest respect for anyone who has been overweight and has found the courage and determination to conquer their problem. I have the greatest compassion for anyone who is overweight and just can't seem to get a handle on it.

It is true. Some people are fat because the are stupid or lazy. But not all, and probably not most.

Beware of oversimplifications, quick judgements, and blanket statements.

I thought about taking one side of the issue or another, but it seems both sides and the middle ground of this issue have been adequately covered in my own view. So, I will instead make a comment about two of my own experiences. One is a specific instance that occured earlier this year and one is about a life-type change.

Situation one, I had my annual exam back in april of this year (ain't being a woman just great sometimes). The female doctor that I saw that day had an ass about three times as big as mine but a waist about the same size as mine. I'm not exaggerating on her proportions either, but this did not affect me in one way or another until she made some comments. She does her exam of my upper areas and says how I could lose a few pounds. She then proclaims that I don't exercise most likely and that I overeat most likely as well. I told her take a look under the cover there lady, I am all muscle from there down. She smirked and then looked at my lower areas and agreed about the muscle comment. So I proceeded to tell her that I ride an exercise bike regularly. She said well maybe you do and maybe you are actually in really good health, but then she tells me to look at her body. She then tells me that she has a much healthier body type by having a small waist and huge ass, and that since my ass is not big but I need to tone up my waist better and drop a few pounds, that I am not as healthy a body type as hers. Okay.....B.S......first off I'm a friggin vegetarian. Therefore, I eat healthy foods just by virtue of that alone. So she can't haggle with me there even though she thought she could at first, she told me to lay off the red meat. Then I watched her waddle down the hallway. Excuse me...I don't waddle and never have. I also just happen to have a smaller waist than I do hips and boobs and I am proportionate. From what I've read that makes me healthy. Okay now my anger issue on that is worked out....thanks for listening to all that.

Second situation I've been through. I was always fit and slim through childhood and all the way up til I was about twenty years old. That's when I begin gaining weight, coincidentally when I was married to an overbearing (another story...for another time) person (whom I am luckily no longer married to). The part that is pertinent here is the weight gain issue. I began gaining weight partly due to depression and partly because I was forced to eat a primarily meat diet. I'm not joking about that...I was actually forbidden to eat what I wanted even if it was cheaper, because he wanted meat and corn and potatoes....everyday. So I had to eat in a manner I'd never been accustomed to, and through the years I gained a good deal of weight. I basically doubled my high school weight in about ten years, and my cholesterol count was over 300 in my twenties, which only added to the other problems. Several years ago I left that situation forever. I'm now married to a man who does eat some meat, but who eats it in moderation and loves my veggie type cooking to boot. I also am able to exercise and not living in a permanently depressed state. My cholesterol count is under 200 and I've dropped a lot of pounds just by being happy with how I eat and going back to the way I'd always eaten when I was younger.

The two points I was trying to make here are this:
(1) Do not point fingers when you are doing worse than someone else.
(2) Lots of things can cause a problem, and without knowing all the factors you cannot say it's any one reason.

Good points callei. Good damn points.
It seems that barely anybody is happy with themselves, so they are unhappy with others...you know, the flat chested girls envying and hating big chested girs, big chested girls envying the small boobed variety....big people wanting to be thin, thin people dying for some curves. It's the lack of happiness within or at least a sense of contentment that is responsible for fat jokes and "he/she must have an eating disorder" rumors. Fat kids are called thundertheighs or chunk (my fav...and man does that sting) and the skinny kids are called daddylonglegs and bulemia king/queen or wussy.
Health is the issue, flat out. I would rather be "overweight" and healthy than a waif who lives a sickly miserable life.
Besides, I kind of like having a little junk in the trunk. More of me to LOOOOVE!!!!
