Everyone is talking about doing a collab effort on a story so here it is.

This is the first chapter of a story I started. Please feel free to continue the story! The first person to post the next chapter is the winner. If you don't get your chapter in on time, don't stress it! Read what is there and go fro that point!

________________________________________________________

The group moved between the buildings, always staying in the shadows and being careful not to make any noise. The walls around them were crumbling. They are the remnants of a great war and a civilization that was now only stories told by generations. This once great city looked like all the other great cities of the world, desolate. Nobody could remember anymore what had caused such devastation. Some said it was caused by corrupt leaders and others said it was one great power struggle. None of this really mattered to Marsha. She was a ‘live in the now’ kind of girl and now her tribe had their own battles. The battles of the past had no bearing on anything in her life.

Edward knelt down at the corner of one of the crumbling buildings and held up his hand. Marsha stopped behind him and knelt down. Her, and the others searched the shadows and empty windows of the tall buildings around them for movement. They had reached the end of the cover that the alley provided them and a wide crumbling road stretched out dark and empty beyond. Crossing that open expanse to reach the alley on the other side was going to be tricky. Either they would be ambushed or they would pass by untouched. And even if they passed by untouched, there was still no way of knowing if they had been seen.

Marsha was part of a special team who did most of the clean up from the Elders mistakes. She cursed the elders again for sending them out on the night of a full moon. The road near them was bright and there was no way to cross it without being seen if there were any eyes present to see them. She kept her back pressed tight against the wall and her 9mm pointed up with the safety off. Her finger was resting on the trigger guard because she was feeling jumpy. Something didn’t feel right about this mission.

Edward turned back to them and the only part of his face she could see behind his black hood was his sparkling green eyes. His eyes looked worried as he began making hand signals to the sniper behind her.

Spade nodded and moved silently to the other side of the alley. He laid down flat on the ground, the side of his body pressed against the building and began searching the windows using the scope on his sniper rifle.

Marsha looked back to Edward and shook her head. The two of them had been friends since childhood and it had gotten to the point that they hardly spoke and simply communicated with facial expressions and gestures. Most of their friends found it unnerving but it tended to make their inside jokes much more amusing. He nodded his head once in agreement that something wasn’t right and then turned his eyes back to searching the windows of the buildings.

Marsha looked back to the others who had been sent with them. Bomber was next to her where Spade had recently been. She didn’t know his real name. In fact, the only person whose name she knew outside of the group was Edwards. He was known to the others as Steel and she was known as Rune. They had started calling her that because she wore a small piece of wood around her neck with a Viking rune of protection on it for every mission. Edward was called Steel because he preferred close combat with knives over just shooting someone from a distance. Bomber was obviously an explosives expert. He was a large man over six feet tall but Marsha knew that his size was deceiving. He was just as fast as he was large. His broad shoulders were pressed against the wall behind them and his dark eyes were searching the roof tops above.

Behind him was Star. She was covered from head to toe in black material and there was good reason for that. Being albino and trying to sneak around at night during a full moon was impossible. Her powder white skin and colorless white hair literally glowed in the moonlight without all the black material and paint covering her skin. She had her back to the rest of them searching back down the alley where they had come from. Edward was point and Star was taking flank. She was one of the most delicate looking people that Marsha had ever met and also one of the most deadly. She was a hell of a good shot and when it came down to hand to hand combat, she was downright scary. There wasn’t anyone that Marsha would rather have watching their backs.

Movement drew Marsha’s attention away from watching the others and her heart was pounding in her throat. Spade moved back to crouch against the wall behind her. Bomber scooted back closer to Star after a brief glance and then returned to keeping an eye on the roof tops above them.

Spade shook his head and shrugged. It looked like the cost was clear but there was no way from this angle to search the buildings on their side of the road. Either they were going to have to take the chance and cross the road or find another way. All of them knew this area by heart and there was no other way across the great expanse of road. The road was called The Divide by her clan because it was the dividing point of their territory and the territory of the Se rs Clan. Marsha still didn’t understand why the Elders continued to try and make peace with the other clan. They had been warring with them for longer than anyone could remember.

Tonight they would attempt to rescue yet another Elder who had walked right into the Se rs Clan’s trap in yet another failed peace attempt. Marsha was definitely tired of risking her life for people who continued to harm themselves in the same manner over and over. She also knew she wasn’t alone in how she felt.

The only saving grace on this mission was the intelligence information. An informant in the Se rs Clan had already given them information about where the Elder was being kept. There was no knowledge, however, on how many guards there were. They were walking deep into the spiders nest with no information on how many spiders there were.

Edward touched her arm and his eyes were questioning. She nodded to let him know she was alright and tried to blank her face of the worry she felt. She had to concentrate on the job at hand and stop second guessing what they were walking into. If she didn’t get a hold of herself she was going to get herself or someone else killed.

Edward motioned for everyone to cover him and crouched down with his gun pointed up. She moved forward next to him and waited for his signal. He was going to take point and if there was anyone watching the road, he would be the one to get shot. He adjusted the rifle on his back and nodded to all of them. Then he was gone, moving in a crouch position out into the open. He moved quickly but kept a sharp eye on the buildings around him. Marsha released a breath she hadn’t known she was holding when he disappeared without incident into the dark alley on the other side of the road.

She looked over at Bomber and nodded. She would go next and her and Edward would cover the others. Bomber blew her a kiss and she rolled her eyes. He was always making passes at her and she could never understand how he could manage to do it even in the most stressful situations. His determination was never ending and a bit unnerving.

She crouched down at the edge of the building and took a deep breath. Then she was running in a partial crouching position across the open area. Her heart was beating so loud that she could hear it in her ears and there was an itching feeling on her exposed back. She concentrated on moving forward and keeping her breathing even. When she made it to the other side she wanted to sigh with relief but fought the urge to do so. Edward was lying down against the building with his rifle pointed at the open windows of the buildings on the other side of the street. She immediately moved up behind him, watching his back. The alley stretched on into deep shadows and she concentrated more on watching for movement then any actual shape.

Bomber came next. His huge frame moved with a strange grace across the clearing that was at odds with his bulk. He moved silently to the wall opposite them and began scanning the tops of the roofs and the windows above them. All flirtatious pretense lost to an ever growing tense situation.

A shot rang through the silence and all of them turned, guns pointed as they scanned the windows. Marsha’s eyes fell on the figure lying in the center of the road and she caught her breath in silent outrage to see Star’s still form lying flat on the ground. She looked up at the windows again and finally caught some movement. There, to the left of the alley they had come through. Spade was moving along the edge of the building towards the door when a second shot whistled past them in the dark alley. Edward shot into the window but there was no way to tell if he had hit his target. Spade disappeared into the shadows of the doorway and they waited in the ringing silence.

Please forgive the lateness, had a power failure.

I kept it short to try to reduce spelling, grammar and all round writing errors.

Hope you enjoy.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------

The dust was still settling and what was left of the group had already regained their senses. Marsha stood motionless gun pointed at what she had seen in the window until Bomber shuffled his feet quietly toward her. Getting up off of his stomach, Edward looked toward Star lying in the divide. Marsha knew then what he was going to do would either jeopardize the mission entirely, or save them all. As she silently prepared to run along side Edward her attention was abstracted again by Bomber.

He silently muttered ‘Star was taking flank tonight’. Both Marsha and Edward look back to Bomber to tear a strip off. Then all at once they realized why he spoke out against all better judgement. If Star was taking flank tonight, why did she run across before Spade.

They all stood for a brief moment to realize what this meant. They had to find Spade.

Bomber gave Marsha a hand up to the window that he had just finished looking threw. Edward ascend up the wall and into the window behind her gave the room a once over, then walked slowly to the window looking into the divide. Bomber reached up to the window but before he had a chance to join them in the room; a shot rang through the silent night once more.

Edward was looking into the divide looking for movement. Marsha had already checked the hall and was hesitantly walking to the window. Backed up flush to the wall with gun drawn Marsha heard some one go running down the alleyway. Marsha looked to Edward who was now at the door looking into the hall way. Something had gone wrong, she could see it in his face.

Edward looked to Marsha and gave the signal to move out. Marsha had checked the hall already and knew roughly the lay out. To the right was the end of the hall and the left was a moon lit hall for 20 feet before it turned. They had to take the chance no one was waiting for them. If they didn't, their assassin would mount an attack on them.

Edward took point keeping his eyes on Star’s body while taking turns watching the windows across the divide. Marsha and Bomber sneaked their way to the end of the hall. Marsha had just reached the shadow’s edge when Edward shouted “Shit!” As Marsha turned to look at Edward she caught a flash of light followed by a sharp gunshot cutting though the crisp night air. “What!” Marsha yelled back to Edward before she could stop her self. “They got Spade.” Edward replied pointing to the building across from them. Marsha looked at the approximant location of where the flash came from. There in the other building lit by the moon light she could see Spade lifeless propped up against the wall. Something was with him moving in the shadows. Bomber tapped Marsha’s shoulder and with his eyes directed her view back to Star’s corpse. Two pale, gauntly figures busted from ally. “Mutants.” Marsha called out to Edward.

Mutants were a savage clan from the south. They ritualistically slit open their mouth cheeks exposing all their teeth, shave their heads, and etch their own skin. They looked quite sickly with pasty skin and emaciated bodies. It was why they were called Mutants. No one was really sure who was first to name them, or if they had named themselves. Whatever the case they lived up to their reputation, rumors say they would shoot up testosterone for colds, or crack for flues. Often there were accounts of male mutants abducting, and raping anyone they could catch in their raids. Female mutants were no better taking any man or boy careless enough wander alone. Worst of all they were cannibals.

Mutants hadn’t always been feared as they were today. Edward’s grandfather use to say Mutants were no more than loony slap-heads. Up until the day some fool taught them about guns. Most believed it was Prophet Roach who really put the Mutants together. In Ed’s grandfathers time Prophet Roach went around teaching tribes how to make gunpowder, ammo, powerful drugs, and preaching about war. Some tribes chose to listen and went to war against any other tribe that held territory. Till one day Prophet Roach was caught by several different tribal leaders teaching darker arts of war to the enemy. The Leaders would not be played for dopes and killed him on the spot. The wars had left deep scars with the tribes, causing mistrust and isolation. These days the Mutants were quickly invading the tribe’s oldest territories. It was the reason behind the Elder’s trip over to the Se r tribe. They had been trying to set up some kind of treaty with the Se rs, but those scars run deep.

Marsha was relieved to only count three Mutants. However, they would have usually taken an albino like Star back to their compound for offspring. Which meant these three were scouts and hungry too. Edward moved cross the hall and squeezed into the shadows. “Got any ideas?” Edward asked but not expecting any answers. Marsha gave Edward a look as if the had rediscovered electricity. “I have a plan; now that our old one is shot to Hell. We’ll lure them in as decoys for the Se‘rs, while their distracted we sneak around and rescue the Elder.”

The plan was not easy due to the unknown factors. How many mutants were there and where were they hiding? For all they knew, there could be hundreds of mutants hiding inside the buildings. One thing was for sure, they couldn’t go outside without the chance of being taken down by the sniper. Or could that be snipers?

They had to get the mutants attention without getting dead and then lead them on a chase right to the Se rs front door without putting themselves in the middle of a fire fight. The distraction was just what they needed to keep the Se rs from noticing their presence in the underground tunnels. The plan had been to enter the tunnels from a man hole that was located a few blocks from their present position. The difficult part of the new plan was that they would have to lead the Mutants to the front door and then double back behind the Mutants flanks and return to the man hole without being seen.

The three of them crouched in the hallway with the map they had drawn up and layed out their plan. Edward and Marsha would lure away the mutants and, once they were gone, Bomber would move to the man hole and get things prepared for their decent. There was no way to tell if the metal ladder in the man hole was even there so each of them had climbing gear in their packs. Edward and Marsha gave their gear to Bomber who stuffed it into his pack. It was a heavy loud but he was a big man. Using a piece of charred wood from the floor, Bomber marked the locations where he would lay claymores to keep anyone from catching him with his hands full of ropes.

The signal word and reply was decided on and hands clasped. Bomber moved back into a dark corner and waited for the two of them to lead away the Mutants before he would make his way to his objective.

Marsha’s heart was pounding in her ears as they returned to the window. Outside, the sound of wet meat made her stomach churn as her mind created images of Star’s body being ripped and eaten. The smell of a sewer filled her nose and she knew they had made their way into Star’s intestines. She closed her mouth and tried not to breath too deeply.

Edward gave her the signal and Marsha jumped through the window and made a dash for the alley. She could hear Edwards boots hit the pavement behind her as a scream of anger filled the air. The sound was like nails across a chalk board and brought the adrenaline pumping into Marsha’s veins. She looked up as she ran and could see dark forms moving along the building tops, matching their speed. It took every bit of self control not to push herself. She had to keep a steady pace. Running out of wind before they reached the Se rs would be a deadly mistake.
