Kay, so here's the tale. I don't know how much I should worry about unknown
people trying to chat me up on IM after I hurt some neofascist's feelings
in one single IM conversation.
I keep my messenger id public on the forums I frequent, because I met some
nice people that way.I therefore tend to allow people on my messenger list
even if I don't recognise the ID. A couple weeks ago, I got added by a guy
who, as I've quickly found out, was a member of a local neofascist
organisation. Since all he could do to defend his beliefs was spout out one
country. one religion, one sexual orientation, the jews and the freemasons
are out to get us cliches and bad logic, and since his attempts to hit on
me and the general agressiveness of his tone had stopped being amusing and
became annoying, I blocked him. What followed up was a bunch of messages
from a different id apologising for his behaviour, saying that he liked my
style and offering drunkenness and the fact that I had provoked him as
excuses. Blocked again. Logging on to the forum that he got my ID from, I
found out that he had been hitting on every girl that paid him a smidgen of
attention.
A couple days later, I get an add from a girl-sounding nickname. She had a
Kristallnacht-something status, she knew me from some forum but she wasn't
sure which and did the usual what's your first name, where are you from,
what music do you listen to IM introduction. I answered her questions since
it was info that was then available on the forum that neofascist guy got my
ID from. Then she left and hasn't messaged me since.
Today, a neutral-sounding nickname adds me. At first, he didn;t want to say
where he had my ID from. After I told him I'm planning to block him, he
said it was from a member of a neofascist organisation but didn't want to
be lumped up with him. Apparently that guy told him some stories and he
wanted to check up if they were true. Googling for his ID led me to a site
for making fun of uncool people, where he was one of the active, more
agressive people. He also wanted a picture of me and gave off a
manipulative vibe. Bye bye, block.
As I've said, I don't know how worried I should be about it. The info they
have on me is my first name, the city where I live in (about 400 thousand
people), my age and my music tastes. I don't bother dressing up anymore and
I rarely go to the music events, so I'm not that easily identifiable from
that point of view. Still, I wonder what are the chances that butthurt
neofascist guy got butthurt enough to plan some physical retaliation and
what I should do to stay safe. |

I wouldn't worry too much about butthurt guy planning physical retribution.
I'd chalk it up as another person who thinks they can say and do anything
from behind the anonymity of their computer screen. As for unknown friends
of his bugging you online... I guess you maybe just need to check out
whoever adds you, and be careful not to reveal any sensitive information
about yourself - like I say, it's probably nothing anyway, but it can't
hurt to be careful. ____________________ Do not fear death so much, but rather the inadequate life. |
