First Columbine, now this. It is almost hard to believe how much coverage
is given to this kid's appearance and lifestyle, and other things remain
untouched like his family life, intervention by school staff and
counselors, or childhood abuse... Thoughts?

Well, Rogue, I think you're full of shit first off. It's part of the goth
scene to be an outcast and do stupid shit to society, what's society ever
done for us? LMFAO I mean, how many goth prezidentz were there besides
that Amish guy with the hat and Jefferson Davis? Feck 'em all man, Marilyn
Manson is what Jesus wants to be when he grows up and finds his angst and
I'd march in his army into Al Megiddo if He winked at me with that one
whitish contact. LOL OMG, like anyway, there was this guy in my class and
he was like totally looking at me like he smelled his mom's panties after
her pilates workout or something, and I'm like, Do u have a problem joe
preppie, or have you never seen safety pins before? luz3r!! Anyway, i like
this site cuz it brings us together and stuff and we're like an army or
something that the establishment fears and I think Devin is rilly cool and
stuff and his girlie is hot and all that, and seattle is like mecca and i
pray to it evry nite when i pass out from mad dog cuz it rains and its sad
like my soul is sad and i just feel like its all part of something bigger,
you know? Im hungry, ttfn.

Dyleski has been described by classmates as a popular jock who followed the
NFL and dressed in GAP from the logo on his t-shirt to his well-cut
jeans.
A sports emblem was carved into [the victim's] back.
"He was just really a athletic kid, and everyone knew who he was just
because of his team jersey. When you heard the name, you were just like,
'Oh, that kid,' " a classmate told CNN.
"He just definitely stood out in front of anybody in the school," the
classmate added. "When he walked by , everybody talked about him -- like,
he definitely didn't blend in."
Former classmated told The Associated Press that Dyleski drew a play
diagram on the ground at school and that he read from "the NFL
rulebook."
"He was really preppie, always wore a t-shirt and jeans," Kevin Ethereidge,
16, told the AP. "He'd hang out with the jocks and cheerleaders, and he
talked a lot, pretty outgoing."
...
Somehow that just doesn't make such good copy. Since when does someone's
fashion statements have anything to do with crimes committed?
I agree with Rogue (first post!) They should have stayed away from the
sensational nonsense about what the kid wore, and maybe investigated
something that really mattered, such as what drove him to kill someone.
The last thing this country needs is a new reason to discriminate. So you
can no longer hate someone for having black skin - but fearing someone for
wearing black clothing is A-OK.
The report speaks more of the crime of "not blending in", than that of
actually killing someone. Will someone please push some legislation here,
because we can no longer allow society to be menaced by those who don't
look like everybody else!

Apparently this thing cuts through all levels of society, all the way up to
the marble halls of our elected leaders.

To me this says "Next time on Law and Order". I can see it now.

Interesting to me how you can pick and choose your precedents to justify
your prejudices. "Of course we are profiling these non-conformists... you
have to admit, Charlie Manson was out on the fringe!"
But if we want to break down the raw statistics, how many crimes (violent
or otherwise) are being perpetrated by the non-conformists (like the happy
kids from Camp Columbine) and how many are being perpetrated by ultra
conformists (Dennis Rader was a pillar of the community... if he grew
his hair out or showed up at a dance club in some leather breeches, they
would have nebbed him within a week)...? When the freeky-deeks stab a
person, they get splayed all over the news (who else remembers the
satisfaction everyone got when Richard Ramirez got tree'd?). But the
ultraconformist can go years and years at a time without raising the
eyebrows of his or her neighbours.
So while we are profiling "dangerous elements", I'd like to bring up the
selective precedents of Tim McVeigh and Lee Harvey Oswald and suggest that
clean-cut former members of the armed forces should be considered dangerous
until proven otherwise. The more they look like a Norman Rockwell
painting, the more likely it is that they are trying to hide dangerous
intentions (or even dangerous head injuries... with improvements in combat
armour, the most common injury coming out of the middle east right now is
called "non-invasive brain injury". Meaning, in a nutshell, getting hit in
the helmet with a bullet and having your brain turned into scrambled eggs
but leaving you looking "normal" on the outside).
And let's not forget non-violent crime... which is by far costleir and more
detrimental to the functioning of society than the statistically uncommon
brutal murder. So who is pulling off these white collar jobs these days?
Is it the moody loner with the greasy hair and long trenchcoat, or is it
the dapper fiduciary sociopath with the impeccable manicure? I mean, as
long as we are profiling here, who is more dangerous to your welfare... the
guy with the septum ring or the guy with the club tie?

It appears to have been an elaborate hoax to cover up the obvious...a
delivery service slip-up.
If the equipment purchased fraudulently by underage credit card thieves had
been delivered to their illegal drug growing plantation instead of
elsewhere...then the whole incident might have been prevented.

So it's all USPS fault. Maybe they should be sued for it or something.

Monolycus, you ignorant slut (because all well-written counterpoints must
begin that way),
You have completely missed the point. This isn't a case of profiling at
all. The media have reported the appearance of this individual in an
attempt to humanize them and to report the news as completely as they can.
Would it have been profiling if they had just reported the age of the
suspect? Are you saying their is a prejudice against high school students?
I am disappointed in you for trying to politicise every simple story you
run across and for shamelessly bumping forums every time you want to have a
discussion.

I'm a bumper, am I? Tell you what, pal. Figure out the difference between
"their" and "there" and then get back to me. You illiterate.

The occult and the gothic lifestyle tend to attrract the mentally
unstable... so, of course it reads like that... hell... the truly
antisocial flee frfom the things that make people well adjusted. the issue
here is not that they pegged him as gothic... but that they never
acknoweldge that mental illness that leasds to this kind of behavior
transcends cultural boundaries... in the 80s, it was not gothic, but D&D...
so... let is slide, like acid off a duck's back
