I consider myself gothic and I always have, but in the last year my parents
have thrown most of my gothic clothing. I have managed to save my favorite
Kurt Cobain shirt, my pink arm hose, my pentacle and some make up. I
understand that gothic people usually dress in all black and have fucked up
hair colors and all that other stuff, but does not wearing all that make me
less then the ones who do? I don’t think so but my opinion doesn’t always
matter. I look at the inside of a goth, see if there is the goth in there
soul.
That’s were it should lie, not in there clothes. I bring this topic to you
all to see were all of you stand. If you met me and said I no words at all
I wonder if you would be able to tell. I don’t really wear being gothic as
a badge anymore I let people find it out on there own, it makes it more fun
to watch them gasp. Coming from a very small school in the middle of
nowhere, gothic is like a sin. They (the school) consider me the ringleader
of all the trouble in the school. If only they could open the feeble minds
of the school and the world they would see that there precious jocks are
the ones to blame. I may be goth but I try my best to be a good student
even though I suck ass at English and always am I frowned upon. I am
getting off of my subject; I want to know what the respectable voices of
Shmeng have to say.
What do you think makes a goth gothic?

I´m gothic. It is in the soul. You see the world differently, you feel
the need to create. You know you aren´t mediocre. You know you´re
different. I come from the middle of no where and go to school in a small
town. No one else in my grade, the grade above me or the grade below me is
gothic, and if they dress it it probably doesn´t mean they really are.
Anyone can wear a lot of black and claim to be gothic but that doesn´t
automatically make them goth. Some people are goth and aren´t good at
writing or art but they´re good at other things and they use those skills
for the better. Goths see the world as it is. And how it should be. It
does come from within. No matter how you dress.

I hear this often and it usually will bring out the worst in people for
some reason.
We all know how it happens so lets try and keep our tempers in check?
*Note: I consider culture both nationality and personal style, if that
makes sense*
What makes me goth? I could get into my life´s story, tragic, painful,
traumatic childhood and so on but I´m not. It’s extra baggage which doesn’t
need to be dropped off here. In my opinion, I don´t really consider myself
gothic or anything but myself.
But, if you want to say that you’re involved with that culture *style etc*
of being gothic, punk or what not, in my opinion, what makes you a TRUE
goth, punk, etc is if you are a independent person. This meaning not
following the trends and being the person that you feel you are, not the
person which other people want you to be.
Anywho, that’s what I believe and that’s how I feel.
see I feel the same and I am so tired of getting the shit from the people
who think its the looks. I actually hit a bitch for saying shit like "your
wearing yellow...your not goth." I never ever thought that I would find
people that would love me for me, then I came here. No one cares that I am
odd and shit. One thing I hate more than someone who doesn´t like me for
being gothic, is some one who hates me for my sexuality. YES I´m bi, GET
OVER IT!!

I know a girl whose bi, shes cool shit She has skin cancer.
This one girl made fun of her for it, it was so mean. People at school
suck, you just have to deal with it. Most don´t talk to me anyway, I´m not
very tactful when they ask my opinion on something.

I´m a quiet goth, one of those goths who-if bothered constantly-will lash
out. Otherwise I´m a nice goth. I´m just me. goth in my own way.

i don´t claim to be anything; i´m just me. But most people at my school
regard me as either "goth" or "freak" (ok, 70% freak...)
it´s a living

Before I graduated high school, I was more or less respected by everyone
there. I had alot of friends in high school *unlike elementary
school...lousy tramatic childhood* and when I get into a fight, I tend to
well, become the devil in human form.
heh, but other than that lil´ problem, I just respected everyone no matter
how they choose to live their lives and I got the same respect in
return.
Yeah, there are a few assholes in my old school who always wanted to start
trouble but they backed down when I was ready to slam their heads into a
locker...
Wow...
I was a pretty violent guy. . . But, they deserved it for mistreating so
many people.
Anywho!
The point is, at school people did too label me a goth. When they asked
"Are you a goff?" I´d reply "no, I´m just myself."
alonesoul! right on! honestly, i never believed in how anyone could be
"gothic" or have a "gothic" personality because when it comes down to it,
everyone is just themself.
(here comes my two cents, you may want to duck & cover)
the whole gothic culture thing isn´t made up of people who are "gothic",
it´s made up of people who share interests which could be called "gothic".
they (not everyone) dress in a fashon called "gothic". they find common
interests and band together and call themselves "gothic".
Fine, let the masses call themselves what they wish, but when i see someone
i don´t see a goth, i see them.
when it comes down to it, you´re not a goth, you´re just yourself. too many
people have trouble accepting that. :-( now everyone will be mad at
me...
Umm...my ribbed vaults, pointed arches, and flying buttresses make me
gothic? :-o
Heehee. Sorry, I couldn´t resist.

Imaginative use of color, definitely. However I am feeling somewhat less
than illuminated today...

heh, for some reason this post reminds me of the question "Which came
first, the chicken or the egg..."
Then it was found out the single cell organisms came first...
But that´s besides the point.
What I’m trying to get at, the whole “what makes the individual a goth,
punk, prep” etc is really just a question which can only be answered by the
personal opinion. Even if you say you’re doing it to follow the trend, it’s
still a answer. *as sad as it is and in my opinion, which contradicts what
I just said, is wrong.*
Now this whole thing can get even more complicated when you ask someone
“what makes you a TRUE (insert association here)” but still, the right or
wrong answer lyes only in the eye of the beholder.
And Duckie, I agree with you 100% when it comes to seeing people as they
are and not by what they wear. Noone is really a goth, punk, prep, skater
or whatever you’d want to be associated with, you are yourself. That,
really does piss people off, especially those which take these things too
seriously...
That is unless you come from a country called "gothoania"....yeah, then you
could say you that....
*thinks...that didn´t make too much sense*

I actually don´t consider myself gothic. You´re probably thinking I´m one
of those that say ´labels suck´ and think I´m on any higher level than
people that label themselves. I didn´t see someone like this and say
´that´s cool, I want to be them´...I could be like the originator of this
outlook. But I´m interested in the...scene, is it? The music, the opinions,
and the poetry that comes from the gothic mind. I like their style and
state of mind. I wear it on my sleeve, and in my heart, and all over me.
