Imagine, if you will, a place in which the quality of life is poor, the people only come in two ages...extremely ancient and teenager. A place, where no one leaves the house after dark, except to visit the mall. A place where it takes 30 minutes to get to the nearest gas station, and another 20 minutes to get to anywhere else. No, this is not some paranormal twilight zone, this is your entire county. I live in Central Florida, where rednecks run free and old people clog up the endless highways. I need an escape. Question is, where?
Only having been to NYC, and realising that's not attainable, what is the next best place to live, for the gothic persuasion? Is their one city that has the biggest, most healthy gothic scene? Or is it nondescript cow-towns across the board? I would elect New Orleans, but not having been there, I cannot fully say. There HAS to be more than this, I know there are many others on here that live in backwater shitheel towns, who understand my pain; what would be the number one city to be in, aside from NY? I think NY would be the best, but also the most unaffordable.

sincerely...your samhainwolf

Living in Glasgow I would recommend it as long as you could ignore all the neds and slipknot kids running around. ALthough Edinburgh would probaly come out ahead if you were trying to find a big goth scene. With club nights like the Mission, a great night out, and places such as the Necropolis you should find plenty to do and great places to get drunk in, which is all that really matters.

Yes, Scotland is always a consideration. This being especially so, seeing as I'm Scottish. Edinburgh is on the proverbial "to do" list...However I don't wanna work in a factory No, Scotland is an awesome country, and the brogue is something to be admired.

you could always try taking a road trip to atlanta, ga. there is a pretty good goth scene going on there. even if you are not able to move at the moment it would probably be a nice change of scenery for you. as far as places to live go i used to live in washington dc , that was the best goth scene i ever had a chance to enjoy, there was always something going on there. i am in the same boat you are in right now , i currently reside in north east alabama. it is only temporary, husband stationed here a couple of years. the way i stay sane is by pursuing my interests, creatively and intellectually and that helps so much.

There is a pretty good Goth scene in Richmond Va. Not as big as the punk scene though i bounce between both....its weird though cause most punks can't stand goths and most goths can't stand punks so I am like the mediator....DC does have a fucking awesome goth scene..I live about an hour and a half from DC and its awesome there is ALWAYS something going on there....We have a lot of what you would call "hot topic" kids here who know nothing of hte subculture and just think its the cool thing to do and then of course the little pop punk and emo kids....Unfortunately here we have a rather large emo scene here that makes me sick...But i love it here...there is always something to do

Madrid.

Old Europe, old buildings, works of art, CULTURE EVERYWHERE YOU LOOK AT, the Ateneo, the Gothic Poetry Contest, goth clubs open til 9 o'clock in the morning, cheap but good alcohol served all night (morning) round, cheap tobacco (Marlboro less than 3 US$), gorgeous women and interesting men of all sexual tendences, lots of them English-speakers, no need for a car to get to the Scene or move within it, the best Metro in Europe, NO RELIGIOUS BIGOTS, real tolerance towards your aspect as long as you remain polite, one hour away from Barcelona, two hours from both Paris or London (in a domestic flight, no customs), Absentha (the real, green, thick, sour one), Espronceda, Becquer, Larra...

Plus the added advantage of being an "exotic" American (doing an American goth scores in the imaginary ladder to Madrid's gothic übergoths) and the chance of finding a job just by teaching English.

beach goths are some seriously interesting people, well as interesting as surfers can be at least. they are all Zenny, til they kick your ass.
--back to the main thread--
If you are looking for the perfect goth town, might help to find out what kind of goth scene you want; fancy pretentious gothness, meat market gothness, DIY gothness, live bands all the time gothness, urban gothness, rural gothness, dance club gothness, goth-cafe,etc.
do you prefer poetry readings or mosh pits? Do you prefer leather or velvet? Every city has a difference feel and the scene there tends to be like that city.

thats true, I mean i live in Hollywood, in south Florida, and its not that bad. You could easily stay in the stae and get into the scene over here. We've got clubs like the Kitchen, and its a pretty rockin place. Plus its a nice cheap place to live, but within 15 minutes of Ft. Lauderdale and Miami, which is the Goth and rock capital of the state. In fact three other distinguished members here hail from our own Florida and are doing just fine (depending on your definition of the word). Lestat, WorthlessLiar, and Sticupus all live here and they have maintained their "disturbing to others fun for us" lifestyle with ease. just move the requisit 200 miles. piece of cake.

Conversly you could stay for a while. I know CentraFlor isn't exactly a 14th century cathedral with all night industrial music, but it is filled with lush and beautiful natural springs (some of the only like them in the world) fuelled by a massive underground aquafer. Try to visit those, on a cool fall day, with a camera and a notebook. I gauranty that the natural beauty of one of those babies on a nice peacful day will fill you all types of inspiation about the simultaneous greatness and worthlessness of life and...... You know what, yeah, ditch Central Florida. Live here for a while Liar, Lestat, Stic and Squire will take you to some out of the way Miami bar and show you what Florida is all about. Sweltering heat and horrible drivers. Oh and voting issues.

Then ditch the country and stay in France. Its like New Orleans, only not as hot. And its the home of Modern art.

I agree with Callei: what kind of goth were you trying to find? Are you going for a place where goths are most accepted? To find that you would need to go to a place where there is such a diverse culture that they no longer care. Are you looking for a place with the best scene in the area? This answers to this of course will be highly subjective. I live in New York City right now, and it is great for me personally. I am an artist surrounded by galleries and I do not have to drive anywhere. Living here is nowhere near as expensive as some people would like to think. The key is finding the places to shop, what you want, etc.

If you cannot find what you are looking for, then find a place with an agreeable atmosphere and import people. Most places will allow a commune of sorts, provided that you check their laws and make sure you do not seriously disturb your neighbours.

Squire: you are forgetting that I used to live in Florida before moving to New York. Have you ever heard of Tequesta? It's where New Jersey residents go to die.

Yeah but you don't count, you escaped: And to New York no less. Thats like wanting sympathy fo having a disease, and then it gets cured, and then it gives you super powers.

I'd give a generous portion of a finger to live in some tight N.Y. studio apartment, surrounded by all my photographer and writer friend, dodging bike messengers and open man hole covers, and wandering around in a scenic, rustic, over priced bliss. Plus I'd be a member of these cats:

http://www.jinxmagazine.com/

These guys run around New York's abandoned ruins, steam tunnels, and subway systems in three piece suits, exalting the splendor and history of one of America's oldest, coolest, and most famous cities.

All in all I'd say you luck out my friend. But none the less, you lived here, and so you must know that SamhainWolf doesn't have to explore the ends of the earth to find gothic bliss. There are cool places in our fair state, just not in Central Florida.

I would say that an amazing place to live would be Steamboat Springs, CO. I know it's a bit out of the way, but it is really a cool place. I've lived here quite a while, and at first i hated it but you come to find that there are aspects of this place that make it better than any city I've ever been to. First off, Steamboat is small, there is zero traffic, and after living here a few years, i've come to know every street in this town like the back of my hand, it's really quite convenient. In the winter, we've got the greatest snow in the country. We have the best champagne powder I've ever experienced and tons of it. And the winter driving conditions are a blast *wink*. Yes, the 'gothic' Scene here is limited to about 3 or 4 people, but I've found that that's not exactly a must have for a fun town. I know so many awesome people here that aren't gothic, and I wouldn't trade them for a whole scene. That's the real beauty of this town, there are so many cool people here, if you know where to look. And this isn't overshadowed by the insane crowds, traffic, and pollution. Of course, we have our share of rednecks and such, and with each year the tourons are gaining strength, but over all this town it just totally chill, full of cool people, and situated in a super little piece of the globe.

I'm convinced that Columbus, Ohio is the emo capitol of the world. You can't throw a rock here without hitting some indie rock hipster turd or his Make Out Club girlfriend. You know a subculture is trouble when the members manage to be more pretentious than mods, mopier than goths, and snottier than punks.

On that note....how many indie turds does it take to change a lightbulb?

I hail from the country hick land of Central Florida. Old Tampa tends to be my stomping ground. Have you ever tried going to The Castle? How about Sacred Ground coffee shoppe? La France Vintage Consignment in Ybor? Yes, I know the tortures of Central Florida, and the icky people. But while you are here, give those places a chance. If you turn out cool, perhaps we can chill together sometime.

Personally, I adore my shitkicker town because my makeup always looks better than everyone else's, and being amongst them (on the few occasions I leave my house) even in plain clothes makes me feel FANCY.

I love feeling fancy.

Besides I'm old enough and mean enough to be scary to would be agressors. I have no problems.

Between the rednecks, lesbians, and annoying college students, I'm sure there's room for everyone where I live...after all, just about every culture/subculture is represented in some way here, even though we're only about 19,000...

Arthegarn: I wish I'd have known Madrid had a goth scene during the couple months I spent there last year. I don't think I even saw any goths when I was there. Although there is the statue of Satan...I got a kick out of that.

As far as places to live, I would highly NOT recommend East Lansing/Lansing Michigan. There is no scene here whatsoever, save for one club that does a halfhearted (and extremely underpopulated) goth night (if anyone has any recommendations for this area I'd love to hear them...I haven't been too impressed by anything since I moved up here). I hear Detroit has a good scene but I've yet to check it out.
