- Are you as tired as I am of parents and politicians using children as
trump cards? Sure, I agree you should stop sites that will pop up if you
happen to misspell "Barbie" but this slogan "to protect children from
harmful material" is far too broad and overused.
Parents have the options and the tools to "protect" their kids so why
punish the world for the "moral protection" of those who will eventually be
doing the things you see on the internet? (that's a pretty blunt and
cynical way to look at this but it's basically the truth)

You hit the button square on, Bettie. 
We need more responsibility and less legal issues.
Hong Kong's economy use to be better than our's for they did not have so
many legal issues. They KNEW that they were getting into dirty business
when they did and you know what? They'd take responsibility for it.
My bike got wrecked yesterday. The person was waiting for traffic to pass
by so I went along, but she let off the brake. Partly my fault for I
figured that she would have waited for traffic to clear up, but either way,
it's what happens when people do not LOOK IN BOTH DIRECTIONS. Fortunately,
she knows of responsibility and is getting me a new bike, but a lot of
people around this area would just take off. I was lucky for it was more
side than front, so I only scraped my elbow and wrecked my bike. It could
have been a lot worse. I'm taking care of the wound, she's helping pay the
bike back so responsibility is taken for our actions.
The two things are not related to the topic, but they're examples of people
taking responsibility and using common sense, which is part of my opinion
on how things should be.

Yeah, that would be nice if it was that way...I used to think it was common
sense to well, uh, raise your own kids. Granted I will give some people
this one thing: SOME kids are yes, sadly, and as much of a cliche as it
is, BORN bad. But most of the time it's a direct result of immature people
having babies, people who aren't emotionally/psychologically ready for
children, people who just aren't READY to have children but do it anyway
(for any number of reasons), and just straight up idiot breeding. You can
blame pornography, videogames, movies, and whatever till your face is blue,
but nine times out of ten it's just stupid, irresponsible, immature idiot
parents.
IF you don't want your kid watching porn, don't make it accessable. BUY a
blocker for your internet or shut it off. BUY a parental control device
for your TV or SHUT IT OFF. If I want to watch horrible, low class, cheezy
softcore porn on HBO, it better fucking be there, because I PAY FOR IT. If
you don't want your kids to see what I get a good hard laugh out of, then
don't pay for HBO. Don't let your kids watch your stupid soap operas, or
late night TV. If I want smut, I shall have smut, and no middleaged disney
embroidered denim shirt wearing ninny with $80 highlights in her hair is
going to tell me "no". If said woman did her motherly duty and watched her
own kids, the govt would have to do it for her.
Less goddamned laws and more goddamned personal responsibility.

Yeah, I think some of this stuff is ridiculous. Why don't they make laws
based on irresponsible parents over this, if anything at all? Either way,
a lot of the ways a child is raised is part of the parent's responsibility.
When a parent says, "I have no control over this!", that's bull. If they
need help, they should get help if they need it. Either way, it's their
responsibility.
If psychologists and psychiatrists are responsible for whatever patients
commit homicide or suicide on them, then why is it that parents are not
taking any responsibility for these little things? In turn, if a child
starts doing 'adult-like' things after the age of twelve, then they should
be charged as an adult, as well. Maybe that'll teach parents and children
alike to work on things. Then again, kind of my ramble for the moment.

I"m sorry shade, this is so off topic, but when you brought up the
pornography spam I died laughing thinking of my poor proper mother who had
a full picture lesbian sex webcam ad freeze on her computer screen for 3
hrs *roflmfao* (her computer was acting all buggy)
She doesn't find it nearly as funny as I do.

| i agree with you, devin. parents need to stop depending on the gov't to
cure their ills. parents need to take responsibility themselves, the money
wasted in enforcing laws such as these are a waste of time and money. it
seems as if so many tax dollars are wasted on stupid issues like this and
our country can't even provide every citizen with access to health care,
protect kids living in poverty or in abusive situations. this IS a petty
issue, there are more serious issues in govt that should be addressed. tax
payers are not getting their money's worth with this one. most states can't
even keep public schools in business right now. american kids are in danger
of becoming uneducated morons. that's ok though as long kids are sheltered
from anything sexual. another way for govt to keep the people in the dark. ____________________

Just a little afterthought here. This reminds me of a company meeting we
just had at work. It was one of those boring meetings about what the
company could do to make the workplace safer. This lady who's been working
here more than 20 years was making a huge fuss about how we needed to get
rid of the guns. I was a little confused but finally someone managed to
explain to her that the company didn't have the power to get rid of all of
the world's guns. She never seemed to accept this, but she finally shut
up.
Saying there needs to be guidelines about what goes on the net is like that
lady saying our company needs make a policy to get rid of all the world's
guns. While getting rid of all of the world's guns and making guidelines
about website content are good ideas, Having good ideas doesn't necessarily
keep you from being an idiot. ____________________

It would be far more productive, and protect a lot more kids if congress
were to pass a law against starving children in africa. If america made it
illegal for parents in africa to have starving children, then there
wouldn't be any starving children.
Obviously that's as bullshit as this porn thing is. The majority of the
porn sites are not hosted in the US anyway, so making them illegal will
only make it so their owners (if caught) can't come to the US. If they're
making a good living elsewhere, I really don't think they'll care. And they
certainly aren't going to change their websites.
While it might make a few US based porn sites move their servers to another
country, that's about all the effect it's going to have on porn here. The
sites will still be on the net, the machines will just be elsewhere.
The only people this kind of law will effect is people who run sites that
fall under the definitions but don't make enough money to move their
servers offshore. That means breast cancer research and sex education
sites.
This all seems so obvious that it pisses me off to see people looking at it
though parent colored glasses. Just because something sounds like it's
going to protect your kids doesn't make it a good thing. It just makes you
an idiot for not doing your homework. When the government says they'll fix
everything, that's a real good sign that it's time to start fixing it
yourself. ____________________

| Actually, the sad thing that gets overlooked in this whole situationis the
fact that those ads are actually already illegal. It's against the law to
send pornographic material to anyone without first getting proof that they
are old enough to to view it. Sadly, no one actually wants to enforce the
existant laws, because there isn't enough money in it. What they all want
to do is make more and more laws because with every law that gets written
into the books, there are a dozen riders that can be slipped in under the
wire for things like funding sentator so-and-so's pet project, or outlawing
the use of trackballs in schools or whatever. Basically the legislators are
using the whole issue to push through other, often unrelated laws. ____________________
It is only through the lack of sex that humanity derives the need for an
all encompassing blind love. And in that moment of extreme horniness with

oops! that was me. you are right, i didn't catch the rest of your first
post the first go round. parents should raise their own children w/o gov't
interference. the first ammendment is in question here. this country is
insane sometimes. what a waste of tax dollars. i do agree w/ you even
though i am not a fan of smut. when will anyone draw the line on this
censorship issue. i wonder, is tipper gore behind this?hehehe.  ____________________

Yeah, I'm kind of going both ways on this. I don't think there is any
excuse for parents saying they have no idea/control/say over what their
child is doing online. On the other hand, I really hate those damn emails
and ads. And then there is the stuff that randomly gets downloaded to my
computer. I had a prgram floating around all last semester that managed to
wiggle it;s way into my system when I hit the little button that should
have closed it. Everytime I went to my computer control panel, I got a full
screen ad for naked celebs. It took me forever to find the damn thing and
delete it.
Don't get me wrong, I love porn and smut as much as the next girl, but I
don't want it where I haven't specifically put it. ____________________

This basically covers regular porn sites themselves and not the
individual spammers which I agree, has to go (although some highly visited
sites, non-porn included, are involved with hiring spammers).
I get over twenty e-mails a day asking me if I want to "enlarge this" and
"watch becky do that."

mom , i think there should be some guidelines for porn on the net. i am
female and i cannot count how many times i recieved junk mail such as:
"want to enlarge your penis" or "hot teen sex"& that type of spam , i feel
should be regulated , of course, in reality, if parents do not wish for
kids to be exposed to such things it is their responsiblity to take an
interest in what their own kids are up to not the government's. ____________________
