For first paragraph, see babe-magnet ex-sailor Dolorosa.
For second, I don't understand. If you mean the quote at the bottom of this
post ("Be quiet or I will replace you with a simple perl script"), then you
can change that by going to your account settings. See "Your Account" at
the top of the page, then go there.
Or, if you mean an avatar on the side, then go to the same place and you'll
find a section for choosing your avatar.

In the military you sometimes have to do terrible things when you are told;
like murder people. If you do not follow orders and conform, you can be a
threat to your safety and others. This is a decision you have to make for
yourself- why are they imposing their idea onto you? Beware of your mind,
you can cognitively convince yourself to do this by their pressures onto
you. By them repeating "Join the Navy" all of the time, you can become
desensitized by the notion of all of the bad things you may go through, or
the bad decisions you make could make and sign up. After that, chances are
slim that you will ever think the same way again, you will always try to
justify your actions. That is a long, sad regretful road to be on in life.
In my opinion I believe the youth in the United States are too young to
join the army. Some don’t have body hair, others no wisdom teeth yet. This
biologically signals to me that they are too young, and why at this age
would they have the responsibility make a decision to join the military.
Why would a group like that have the capacity to deal with killing people,
or being killed. They aren’t even fully grown yet.
You only live ONCE, and your mind and body is a fragile thing. Do what YOU
want to do with it. If that means loading bombs, living away from the U.S,
maybe killing people, or getting mangled by weapons, the Navy is for
you.
You sound like you are still in high school. Consider college first, a real
job is even better and might be more available right now. You get to think
for yourself when you are a civilian, and make decisions you cannot when
you are part of the military.
The world is also in an unstable condition, where relationships between
nations are tense. This is in my opinion a very bad time to join any part
of the military. What if you have to go to war? You must consider the
consequences there. Keep in mind that you are not a coward for refusing to
fight. In fact it is quite easy to kill someone, it takes a special gift
and courage not to and help people.
You are not less of a man if you do not want to join the military. You are
not weaker. You are not a bad person. You are not less of an American. You
have one mind, and one body- you need to choose what you want to do with
it.
Your family is upholding a tradition. That doesn’t mean a tradition is
right or right for YOU at all.
You sound young, Try living first, because death and trauma is permanent.
Think about what exactly is making you upset- after that maybe tell you
family when they bring it up. But remember; they can try to convince you to
act otherwise, or even worse- you can convince yourself. Find your ideas
and stick to them.
You may even be able to avoid it all together by ignoring them. No one can
force you to join the military anymore. Try smiling and silence.
And just out of curiosity, how old are you?

I do not personally recommend Dolorosa, as he doesn't see eye to eye with
me on this particular issue. I recommend talking to Ex-Navy Geist (AOL
screen name tattooedslacker if you can get a hold of him online).
Or he could message and speak to both and get TWO sides of the issue. Dolo
and Morte's experiences are just as valid as any other military type
person's, they just have a different take on life.
I say if you don't wanna fucking do it, then don't do it. Go to school,
get educated, and do what you want with your life. They may not like it,
but they'll get over it.

Before joining the military, your first priority is to visit an 80+ nursing
home and talk to all the charming agent orange-smitten vets... then you can
decide if you want to join the military

Riiiiight...ok...damn hippy.
Anyways, Navy can be good, Navy can be bad. Me, I spent some years in, and
I can honestly say that my time in the Navy was a combination of both the
best hours of my life, and the worst. If you are looking for something, be
it action, adventure, or oblivion...it'll do. It's what you make of it.
Patriotism aside...It's a job, a decent one too, you have to take orders,
but you get room and board, good excercise and some damn fine training. You
will travel, and see things most people never will...I mean seriously, how
many people can say they visited more than ten COUNTRIES in a day?
t's what you make of it.
But here's the deal...don' fucking join just because your family is. Like
all things of impotance, such a decision is YOURS and yours alone, to have
it otherwise trivilizes everything.
If you want to see things you couldn't see any other way...go for it...if
not, cool, it ain't wrong to not want to go into the fleet...it can be
fucking scary sometimes.
Personally, it made me stronger, even as it made me vulnerable. I fear
little honestly, and I can hold my on in a fight fairly damn well...I met
hundreds of cool people, lost a few as well. But it ain't all
good...nothing is.
But just a word of solid advice...when asking about the military, I
suggest you listen to an educated opinion, instead of a barking
teenager.
Your choice, and your choice alone. If it's good for you, and you like a
serious challange, hard-assed work, danger and risk...than go for it.
If not, don't it's that simple. No one can force you into something like
that.
Do what you're going to do.
Or you could join the airforce...hahahahaahahahahahaha!
Seriously though...It has it's ups and it has it's downs...what it doesn't
have, is the nuetral in between, it's either batshit crazy, or dead
awesome. Extremes...that what Mil life is about.
An contrary to popular belief...nowadays, civilians and angry morons kill
more daily than any soldier, sailor or marine ever has. We just do it
better.
Consider it carefully...I can't stress that enough...it is most assuredly
NOT for everyone...fuck, it damn well broke me to pieces...but I have
memories that will never fade, things that I cherishe, knowledge that makes
me valuable...and trials that made me strong.
Do or don't...I won't call you a coward if you don't, I'll call you
wise...heh, and if you do...I'll call you courageous, but prolyl foolish.
Depends on how you want to play the game man. Go for it.
And Stic...you have a funny way of maintaining a cease fire ya' know?
Thanks for your enlightened, biased and one-tracked opinion...I suggest you
watch less news.

My experience with the Navy has always been second-hand.
My father is a captain; an officer. He has been in the Navy longer than
I've been alive and has prospered. He has never seen combat and never
will. He is currently working in a nice office that overlooks the harbor
in Honolulu and he will retire there.
One of my best friends was a corpsman; an enlistedman. He was only in for
a couple years, but during that time he worked miracles saving lives. He
was also unfortunate enough to have many pass on under his care. In the
years he served, he was living a fast-paced life, alternately peaceful and
violent, under the supervision of aged war-heroes who polish their medals
to ease the depression of their paperwork. His psyche was permanently
affected by what he witnessed and performed, yet no one will ever remember
the good he did.
Both of these men are heroes to me. They both look back on their careers,
as long or as brief as they may be, with a strong sense of honor and pride,
regardless of what they became afterwards. But this sentiment only came
from the fact that it was a life that they chose for themselves.
The unanimous opinion is that it, as well as all other branches of the
military, is not something in which you should involve yourself if your
whole heart is not in it.
It can, and often does, become a very integral part of one's life. Such is
the reason why you are receiving so much pressure from your family. You
obviously don't want to do it, otherwise you wouldn't have posted. Even if
it's only the pressure that is frustrating you, do not register. Doing so
will only infect you with resentment that will grow with time.
As a greater man than me once said, "If there is any doubt, then there is
no doubt."
Many different people will have many different opinions, but you can only
join the military of your own free will. Express that will.
It is the choice that makes our country proud, not the decision.

ok, back to seriousness.
Do you want to join? Find out, talk to people, Dolo, Morte, and geist are
all people who were at one time in the navy. Just remember, it is your
choice, don't join just bcause you family wants you to.

Are you kidding Dolo? I'm a extremist, make a nun cry, fire breathing
liberal. It’s no offense towards you really, I just have the tendencies to
want my opinion loud and clear. It’s part psychological thing, part ego
thing. One would say I am experiencing the psychological phenomena called
cognitive dissonance. I am so extreme in my views, I can’t help but try to
justify my actions and words by being an opinionated bastard (or seem that
way). My personal view of this is that I just think long and hard about
such things, and come up with cognitively impenetrable ideas that I try my
hardest not to overrule in my mind or be wrong about. Change only comes
with newly assimilated thoughts. data, and experiences.
And I try not to watch any news. All video media is trash, look at fox
network.
If I had it my way, I would have all weapons arsenals and military
dissolved, as I feel that modern military exists for military’s sake.
“We have to have a big bomb, cause’ they do too.”- Any day in the Cold
War.
I believe that world leaders instigate wars that in actuality have nothing
to do with the average person, working at Kmart. Why should they have to
die for that? I personally say why have a military? We can just put the
rich and powerful in a pit with their big weapons on mass destruction, and
turn each other into a pleasing pink mess. Then we can all live out our
lives without worry. However, I would have to disrupt westernized social
roles, Capitalism, and every major government in the world.... (sigh) damn
unmovable sheep.
Anyway, you can clearly see from this little portion of my thought process,
that with my current social schema on the military is very ridged and
reinforced by logic. It’s not easy to sway and I am not willing to let it
(unless I receive new data I cannot foresee at this moment).
Thank you for not taking it badly Dolo, I did not intend it to be that way.
And I am not a hippie; I bathe.

I wanted to join the navy for a little while there...I even talked to a
recruiter. Turns out that there are certain things that are barring me from
enlisting. Go figure.
My advice would be to look at all you options, look at the good and the
bad, talk to people, and make up your own damn mind. Don't let your family
or friends make the decision for you.
And Anemone, that was beautiful. Seriously. Now lets go visit your dad.

Ok kidies, Every one of your views are correct. Except that body hair
thing. I do have a happy trail, and alot of navy wemon look like an ape.
Yes this means I am in the navy. As i write this i am sitting off the coast
of india coming back from this war. I grew up in a town outside New Orleans
joined straght from high school. Went to IL. for nine mounths for AECF
school (advance electronics computer field); not includeing boot camp. IL
was fun to hang out in. than went to MS for four mounths of callibration
school. Now i am stationed in san diego. That means intoxicate trips to
mexico and a three hour drive to Los angels. As far as going to war well; I
hate to say it but been there done that. I sat in side a ac'ed lab banging
my head on the bulk head for a ale. They let us off at dubai (a nation of
United Arab Nations) and a got my ale. Now I am headed to Australia, than
HI.
Navy life has its good days and the bad ones. For example some times the
people you work with just rub you wrong. than the sup. walks in and one has
a black eye and the other a bloody lip. Than you hit port and ya'll buy
each other a beer. Problem solved. you do spend alot of time away from
home.
The bottom line is that life is full of trade offs. It's your choice.

First, Geist was in the AIR FORCE!!!!!!
Stic, for someone I have never met, I fucking can't stand your "opinions"
on the Military. You have no FUCKING clue what the Military is. I work in
a god damn Hospital. I have never killed or been asked to kill anyone. If
you did any type of research on Military life you would know that only 30%
if that go to war, in battle. They get there orders for the big dogs in
Washington and then trickles down the chain to where our boys go to war.
The rest of us work in areas where we don't even get affected by a war. I
go to work and fix computers, I finish my day and go home. AND THAT MAKES
ME A MURDERER. Go fuck yourself you fucking fag. I'm sorry to easily
offended people, but this is it. Stic, I can't stand you, you so claim
to be open minded but your not and never will be. Fuck it. If this site
is gunna keep posting this assholes anti-military bullshit, I'm done
paying for it. I work my god damn ass off for my Navy and don't get much
in return and im happy. But when it comes to fucking queers who have no
balls and at least support the Men and Women who OBEY THERE ORDERS and risk
there lives EVERY GOD DAMN DAY and PRAY AND CRY THAT THEY DON'T DIE THAT
DAY! Its people like you that spit on them when they come home and I bet
you do, or wish you had the fucking balls because you know you would get
your brains kicked in. Teach yourself about the things you hate other then
the news you son of a bitch.

Speaking entirely from the bias of someone who devours sailors for
sustenance (and good, clean fun) I whole-heartedlt reccommend yoo join the
Navy as soon as yoo possibly can and strive to get yorself on a boat (any
boat as long as it goes across the ocean) as soon as yoo possibly can!
It's a great deal! They give yoo a free funeral and everything!
