everyone stereotypes everyone else. it's a natural part of life. no matter
how 'politically correct' one tries to be. unlike ascribed status, achieved
status is the result of someones efforts towards a specific situation. most
status "provides a guideline for how we shall act & feel". that may be tha
case, for most people decide on what they will do in life, or atleast how
they shall live it. that means people (in general) know they need to act a
certain way, or listen to a certain type of music. THEY know (whether
consciously, or subconsciouslly) that they are in a statistic group
of course there is something known as status inconsistencies... that's when
people don't want to confrom to their picked out profession: by day they
live in the corporate world, wear a suit, but by night they go to
Sanctuary(a 'goth' club), & try to pick up a goth chic, even though they
work for people who would'nt normally wear knee-hi buckled boots, with a
fetish skirt, and a top that appears to resemble a strait-jacket |

I cannot think of any, but if you wanted to work in retail, there is always
Hot Topic or Spencers. ____________________ "People always say what we are looking for is a meaning for life…I don't

Spencer's has a dresscode (uniform) of clean black or khaki pants and their
new stylish black and green t shirts...man when I worked there it was HELL
on earth in those unbreathable black or maroon polo shirts...the denim
manager shirts were WAY better but still ungodly...
As for hot topic, there is acutally a dress code there too...you can wear
what you want as long as it doesn't contain any alcohol, drug, tobacco or
sexual references, and nothing satanic. I questioned this on the day I
started work, for obvious reasons, and they said they don't care either
way, but it's for my own saftey and the image of the company (we tend to
steer clear of religious items in general). I totally understood, in such
instances as in the bible belt there were actual, LITERAL "bible throwing
parties' at some store's grand openings. Yup, people outside the store
screamin satan to the hills and chucking bibles at employees.
Plus, we deal with a lot of mom's and younger children, and most mom's
dont' wanna be in there to BEGIN with, are nervous by being helped by a
pierced up, tattooed up, crazy haired sales kid (no matter how friendly)
and the LAST thing they need is to see that same friendly kid with a big
fucking baphomet swingin around their neck or a "I did it for satan" tee
shirt. Most already belive in their hearts we are the ruin of their
children, that we want to steal them, tattoo them, and give mom and dad
aneurisms....so no need to recklessly seal your coffin, so to say. Because
it's bad enough as it is, and once they see any sign of satan you've lost a
customer for GOOD.
I dont' blame them...my mom felt the same way, and to this DAY she will not
stay for more than a moment in my store...just long enough to say hi and
ask if I have a break.
Silly mom.
I can't name corporate names, but a sure fire way to get to do and wear
whatever the hell you want is to be your own boss.
I'm thinking of opening buckley's FIRST satanic coffee stand *snicker*
Oh lawdy, I can see it now.....

Once again I realize I must have the best job ever.
Allthough after many years in a record shop I swore to never work in a record company, I
am doing just that.
My co-workers are great people, none of those slick motherf**ers I used to
hate. Hell, our head of economy worked as sound engineer at my band's last
gig. The sales manager is a "retired" metal-drummer & my closest co-worker had a heavy-guitarist playing the wedding-march
when he got married.
I can dress in whatever I like (I've been complimented on high heels &
fishnets - in a _nice_, not sleazy way...) I can chainsmoke at my office, I
can play the music of my choice, I bring my cat to work every day, he he, and on
Friday I'm having dinner with Tom Jones...
The only complaints I've had was when I left Pucifer at home one day!
Okay, the artists I work with are obviously not in my "greatest hits"
section, but great colleagues, cat & cigarettes, hell yeah! Rather that
than a "cool" job, any day.
(I worked at Playboy Norway before it was closed down, that was almost as
good, but no cat.)
But until the world is a better place, most people dealing with regular,
narrow-minded people must be prepared to put up with dressing in general
non-threatening ways, in order not to loose sales/customers. Sad but true.
Been there, done that, loathed it.

Yeah I do suppose that there is a dress code at Hot Topic. That is awful,
having people throw bibles at the employees. I am a Christian, and good
Lord, I would never ever do that. That is completely wrong. ____________________ "People always say what we are looking for is a meaning for life…I don't

Bettie you rule...satanic coffee stand, that is just funny! I would love to
see it happen though *giggles* If they go to throw bibles at ya you can
just throw up a pentagram and hiss at them....I am sure they will run away
scared. Oh and cut the evil eye at them. |

Yeah it would RULE I'd call it "little black coffee stand of DOOOOOOOOM! "
and my slogan would be "BUY COFFEE OR ELSE!"
And nobody throws bibles at someone with a gun mounted to the top of a
coffee stand.
I actually HAVE been kicking around the idea of a coffee stand....selling
brew, homemade vegan pastries (I'm the worlds most bitchin vegan chef!) and
breakfast fun, and makin mooolah.
yes, yes, that would rule.
And MRD04, I'm glad you aren't from the bible THROWING ilk....because that
would fucking suck. ____________________ Trapped in time. Surrounded by evil. Low on gas. |

Yes it would, because that would mean that I would have to go and kick my
own bum. "Ouch!" No bible throwing here. I believe that everyone was
given the choice to choose, and if you didn't choose Christianity, then
that is how you feel. I will not condem you for it. 'Tis not right to do
so. Darn Puritans thought differently, eh? Boy those people in The
Scarlet Letter creeped me out. ____________________ "People always say what we are looking for is a meaning for life…I

that bad anymore *shakes head* Kinda makes you think though...people are
getting better about that sort of thing and are a little more open minded. |

Exactly. I mean, so many people complain that Christians are not even the
slightest bit open minded, but they obviously have not seen the change.
Would people rather Christians be uptight like the Puritans, or like they
are today...really I prefer today. The movie was very good too. Hester's
eyes at the beginning of the movie were so freaky. Loved them. ____________________ "People always say what we are looking for is a meaning for life…I

Try working in a factory cleanroom - where you are issued a lovely powder
blue suit complete with boots and hairnet! Pain in the ass to put on and
off, and absolutely hideous! The only good thing about it is, it hides the
hideous clothes and hairdo's of all the tacky, unintelligent menopausal
ladies that work there - the sort of people who walk around singing "la la
la" loudly and tunelessly, and think they're being cute! Seriously! It's
painful!
But being a mom, I really don't have the time or energy to dress up like I
used to. Instead of short skirts and fishnets, I generally end up in camo
army pants and a black t-shirt with a favorite band logo on it. Oh well.
I still have dreams of walking around town this summer dressed to the
nines, pushing my daughter in her stroller, and shocking all the
strait-laced and narrow-minded. Then I can be a Madonna in both senses -
the sexual icon, and the Mother! Nice contrast, I think. Not that I'm a
Madonna fan. |

Worst summer job: working in an embassy. People are amazingly moronic.
The herd mentality is so plainly seen you have to carry a cane to beat a
path through the mindless sheeplings. As for the job itself, I spent most
of my time sleeping as there was no work to be done. Sounds like it would
be fun, at first it was, but the second week I was bored to death. I ended
up quiting early and spending my last few days hidden in the caffeteria.
Hopefully it was an expereience not soon to be relived. |
