I have noticed something lately....has anyone else noticed just how shitty horror movies are now? Itīs almost like the genre itself is dead...donīt get me wrong, there will always be horror movies, but good ones? I havenīt seen a good, new, scary movie in YEARS. I think "signs" was the only movie to put me that far down in my theater seat in I donīt know how long and THAT wasnīt even a "horror" movie.
It seems that most of the good movies are shunned and never make it to theaters, just a smattering of obscure releases and then straight to video. Day of the Beast was FANTASTIC...but I suppose I never saw it released in US theaters because itīs in spanish. I tell you folks, Iīm STILL excited for Rob Zombieīs "house of a 1000 corpses" because it smells to me like maybe a resurgence of good old fashioned slasher/macabre/horrifying ..well HORROR. A decent interpretation of HP lovecrafts "the horror of insmouth" and "dagon" was released straight to video...simply called "Dagon".
All the movies I see lately are just cameos for mouse cute teen idols that have more sex than scares...which is scary enough as it is.
I watched the remake of ...oh fuck whatīs it called...the old vincent price movie with the insane assylum....fuck. Anyway...and I wasnīt impressed with "house on haunted hill" either.
ANd how many times are they going to rape the dracula franchise? I mean good christ folks, give it the fuck up. Dracula 2K made me want to burn the fucking theater to the ground. Clive barker what happened to you? Were you high?
Iīd take my 1912 german silent surrealism horror films over than any day. Give me black and white. Give me ed gein in his many maniac incarnations. GIve me leatherface. Give me pinhead. Give me evil dead and all itīs gloriously horrifying and ever so gratifying cheese. Give me hitchcocks blend of horror and suspense. Give me Carnival of Souls, Horror Hotel and House by the Cemetary. I want to relive the momentary image of a bearded and suited anton lavey in Rosemaryīs Baby.
Goddammit Iīd ask for elvira but my wish is my husbandīs command and he got me the NEW elvira...haunted hills BWAHAHAHAH more tit jokes, one liners, and dance numbers with the right amount of makeup and silliness than you can shake your over sized 50 year old boobs at!
Itīs enough to make a girl crazy when she canīt even find a good scare at the local theater anymore. Another friday the 13th? Jason in OUTER GODDAMNED SPACE?! FREDDY VERSUS JASON?? *bangs head repeatedly on televison screen*
I will make some concessions:
Devilīs Advocate
Hannibal
The others that were decent enough obviously werenīt that great or Iīd remember them. Either that or Iīm more exhausted than I thought.

Iīm not a big fan of Nicole Kidman, but I really liked "The Others". It reminded me of what I like in the older ghost movies; what is scary is the stuff you _donīt_ see...
With a very unexpected twist to the story.

Hannibal sucked! Although the dinner scene at the end made it worth watching. I just Red Dragon (I had already seen Manhunter YEARS ago and I canīt remember it at all) which was definatly entertaining but so much of it was Hollywood cheese. Some parts were very clearly ripped-out of movies like Se7en.

Anyway, Bettie. If yoo donīt have cable, get it for this month only! The Independant Film Channel is the only channel worth watching anyway but in October they play some of the best horror movies out there: The Addiction, Dead Alive, Cemetary Man (aka Del Amore Del Amorte) to name a few. Yooīll have some faith in horror cinema once again.

Yes, modern horrors do suck big time. Except maybe things like "The Other" and "The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow", because they have that retro atmopsphere in them (especially the second one)

For me the best horror was "Nosferatu" by Murnau from 1922 (am I right with the date?). And all those cheap things from later on... "Night Of The Living Dead", "Evil Dead", films with Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff and we mustnīt forget Hammer Horrors!

Besides, all the good horrors get released on video or DVD and never end up in theaters. Thatīs when you know that you have to see it...

And, Bettie, whatever happaned with "House Of A 1000 Corpses"... I heard that it was coming out, but they didnīt have enough money or something...

Anything with Christopher Walken in it is creepy as shit.

I used to think so too, and bought a "horror" movie featuring him. Big time crap, with a celtic wich ressurected from the sea. Should have been cool.
Heīs _sweet_ in "Blast From The Past", though.

Theyīre making a īHouse of the Deadī sequel... Hopefully that will be good.
But yeah, horror movies are pretty much dead. The media isnīt going to let someone create a truly freaky movie anymore, because that often involves a lot of gore, and gore=violence="bad for our morals" stuff in the media.

I remember watching the Leprechaun at a friendīs house. It definitely changed my opinion of the cheerful little men...

Censors killed horror!

I read somewhere that the ring is supposed to be really good, very little hollywood shit in the movie.

Carnival Of SOuls!! that movie kicks ass!! And i also agree with you bettie about the crap for horror films that have come out.. I think thats why im such a suckah for David Lynch stuff because heīs modern yet manages to creep the fuck out of me in his films. Thats what horror movies are about.. scaring you.. not makin you wet.

Those Scream Movies? HA! JOKE!! right? Or I know what you did last summer... TWICE!! Come On!?!? wheres the suspence? and even when there is suspence in these Psuedo Horror Drama Flickster films, Its so damn pradictable. Shame shame shame.

I still have yet to see "Signs". But i have been told by several people (that have a good taste in horror) that it was excellent..

I HAVE seen manhunter and I"m loathe to see red dragon. I think I liked Hannibal simply because I adore Anthony Hopkins...I adore him.
Iīm probably going to go see Red Dragon so I can compare it to Manhunter and either gain a glimmer of hope or strengthen my misery.
The Prophecy was pretty good too, I havenīt seen the sequels because I donīt want to ruin my happy memories of the first one.

House of a 1000 corpses....Money wasnīt an issue from the get go. They were finding it IMPOSSIBLE to find anyone willing to CARRY IT! The film execs would watch it and be like "Oh no, no no no weīre not putting our name behind THAT". If you donīt have a carrying studio then you canīt release it. Itīs been done for over a year or two...all the bullshit waiting is due to Rob not being able to find anyone to put it out. I belive I recently read that Lionīs Gate is going to do it, and that it is due out this month or early next year or something...Iīll go do some digging and set it straight.
I did like the Others too, but I think I would have liked it more if it hadnīt come out after the Sixth Sense and all the people ripping off the "dead and donīt know it" idea. As a film on itīs own it stands strong...I just think that if it had come out before or a little later after it would have been better.
I believe the original Nosferatu was released in 1919, but something keeps telling me 1912. I canīt find my silent screamer nosferatu action figure box...Iīll dig, because now itīs going to bother me. It was the same german director who did The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and Metropolis, and the Dr. Caligari boxes say 1919. Humph.
I have a friend who graduated film school and is working on a short independent horror film, which should be interesting to see.
WHen I see a scary movie I donīt want big expensive special effects...I donīt want swanky sex pot heroins who find time to get jiggy with it with their uber masculine or hipster male costars...I donīt even want nothing but blood and guts through the whole thing. I want to not be able to sleep for a week!
Hammer Horror is a beacon of hope, I know

I use to frequent a web site called 13thStreet.com (site is dead now), nothing but horror movie news there. Also Poppy Z. Birte had an online novel on it (Rosery I think it was) anyways it was more of a game really. She started the first page and fans would write the next(after she reviewed the submissions of course) and others would fallow. We kind of had the same thing here called Toy Dolls. So if were all fed up with poor horror movies these days why not write our own? We got the expeirence, talent, and time (maybe).

I would positively piss myself with excitement if they made a movie on one of Poppyīs novels. I would, seriously. If they made a movie of "drawing blood"...*sigh* dreaming, dreaming. I believe sheīs had some movie offers, but sheīs yet to recieve an offer she was comfortable with the creative aspect of it. I would rather wait and wait and wait than have one all of a sudden and have it be a total whackjob.

Oh and I forgot to mention Willam DeFoeīs and John Malkovichīs "Shadow of the vampire"....the making of "nosferatu"...what if the vampire in the movie was really a vampire playing an actor playing a vampire. I also loved the dry, subtle, sardonic humor throughout the whole thing...the type that doesnīt interferre with the picture, and that you have to "get it" or watch for it to see. Willam couldnīt have gotten that role any more accurately...even his slightest movements SCREAMED eccentric crazy actor/befuddled and conniving creature.

I thought that Dagon was pretty good. Never made it to theatres though. I liked most of Jeepers Creepers also. And I believe that the movie with christopher walken and the undead whitch woman is called "Kiss of the Mummy", and yes, it suck serious goat ass.

"Shadow Of The Vampire" was great. I loved the way the got those original shots from "Nosferatu" into it. And those fucking german accents! Ohhh, man...

I know, Shadow was done extremely well...very true to the original silent film. They even left the swastikas on the bedroom walls (before they were inverted and stigmatised by naziīs they were powerful protection symbols in central europe) and even as it showed the scenes as they were filming it they were nearly IDENTICAL to the movieīs original stills.
Even if his movie sucks, christopher walken has got to be one of my favorite actors. I love his SNL character "the continental"....like a humanoid pepe la pu *snicker*
I think Iīm going to go out to a second hand record store and pick up as many elvira movies as I can...theyīve always got good shit, and cheap.
Fred Meyer usually has several dvdīs in their electronics department that are something like 5 or 10 bucks and have two old b-horror movies which is right up my alley. Had a hard time finding them in the freddies near my house tho...

Canīt find any good horror movies, try playing videogames.
The Thing for PS2.
Resident Evil for the GameCube.
Eternal Darkness for the GameCube.
Clive Barkerīs Undying for the PC
System Shock 2 for the PC *a excelent and TWISTED game.*

Horror movies may be toned down for a while *just buy em on dvd unrated* but games certainlly arenīt! If you value your freedom to choose what content you wish, youīll take a stand against censorship...while you still have the right to do so.

Oh yeah, I have The Thing, and I can play my Evil Dead game on the PSII which is BITCHIN.
Iīve played resident evil, but mostly when I play those games itīs to shoot shit/slash shit/fuck shit up...I"ve never been super good at "puzzle" games...Iīm more of a simpler type of girl, but I wish I was better at them, because I LOVE to watch my husband play. I did get pretty far on Batman Vengence, but he beat it FOR me
I do buy movies...I donīt rent, because by the time I get them BACK to the movie place I could have bought them TWICE..Iīm not allowed anymore, so I buy them on sale.
As much as I love my spooky oldies, itīd be nice to get excited about going to the movies again.

If weīre going into horror video games, the best has to be "Silent Hill." I just got "Silent Hill 2" for the PS2 but havenīt had much of a chance to play it (thatīs probably a good thing).

I guess thereīs a "Vampire Hunder D" game for PS1 but Iīve never played it.

Letīs not forget the classic "The 7th Guest" for the PC back in the days when CD-ROM games were young.

Xaos; I think Jeepers Creepers is a good example of whatīs wrong with modern horror... In the beginning it was nice & creepy, as long as you didnīt actuelly see "the horror". Once he was introduced, it just got boring. (Nice home decorating tips down in that cave, though :-) )

Btw, theyīre making a sequel to The Exorsist... I am veeery sceptical...
