Jacob's Ladder
OK, it is an old film, but a great one. I wanted to share the joy with any who may not have seen it. Jacob Singer is an average guy. He works, he has a girlfriend, an ex wife, children. He also fought in Vietnam. Suddenly strange things start happening to him. Are these hallucinations? Is he going mad? Or is there something more sinister at work here? This wonderful film uses a limited cast of core characters to give a superb impression of a normal man's life. It is shot in quite a claustrophobic way with most scenes either enclosed or framed on all sides. It manages to use very little of the obscene skipping of camera angles yet still acheives a highly unsettling effect. Subtle and basic special effects give a sense of realism that heightens the disturbing nature of the film, while Tim Robbins plays Jacob with disarming sincerity and alarming skill. So I've gushed over it, but it is a piece well worth anyone checking out. It twists more and faster than a rollercoaster and is far more exciting. Enjoy, and tell me what you think of it.
