Truthism

Articles - Posted by Rogue on Tuesday, January 17, 2012
Experiences Preface: Many words have lately become hijacked and given meanings contrary to their original, causing an unusual lack of words to accurately and unambiguously describe terms of integrity or truth (conservative now means religious warmonger, for example, instead of its old meaning which had more to do with actually conserving resources, and science used to just mean knowledge and its objective pursuit but has come to be a dogma unto itself), so damn the torpedoes, here goes truthism.

Burning Man 2007: Green Man

Articles - Posted by Comedian on Thursday, November 01, 2007
Experiences Coming back from the burn, daylight lights the coppery-tinted windows of the skyscrapers and cityscape in a way that seems vastly foreign; a week in the desert, dust-soaked and beige-limned, the cleanliness of any urban landscape is alien, dystopic, and an alien distance in the past; like re-visiting the futuristic landscape of a 50's sci-fi drama after living in the neo-post-apocalypse for better than a week. Out on the playa, where the dust storms fly like Afhgani sand and the beat never ceases, just changes tones into the bizarre James Brown-techno-pulse from merengue, these creature comforts of showers and toilets are strange bliss.

My First Threesome

Articles - Posted by daria_4 on Tuesday, March 13, 2007
Experiences I know exactly where my breasts are. Without looking and barely even thinking about it, I can fondle to my little heart's content. But the first time I was faced with cupping another woman's breasts, I lost my capability to hone in and hold lovingly those wonderfully soft mounds of flesh. To turn my hands away from myself instead of toward was to render them useless--or so it seemed to me at the time.

Note: Remember when the board crashed for a few days and we lost the content of those down days? Probably not--that was a few years ago. At any rate, I posted an article under a pseudonym that was lost in the void of that crash, and well, this isn't the time or place to explain the use of the pseudonym, but I've been meaning to repost the article for some time. My first, and only, threesome was a wonderful experience, and I want to share it as me this time.

Creation

Articles - Posted by Domkitten on Friday, January 12, 2007
Experiences I have been, during the holidays, occupying myself with the most peculiar projects. Partially this is to distract me from my own mind. I find my own mind can be a very uncomfortable place to be sometimes and it is far better to get away from it then to stay in it. Aside from that the fact that currently my favorite voices have been silent and taunting me with it. So in a very pointed fuck you to my own brain I’ve been reviving long lost hobbies as a way of amusing myself and distracting myself.

I wrote a little in the forums about how difficult this season was for me... and I am attempting now to put into words what I have been searching for a way to tell you, my friends, for over a month...

Experiences Carl and I want to go for a skate. We'll go later, when it's cooler. For the meantime he's gone to the poolside for a tan. I've already been to the pool, earlier that afternoon when I played Marco Polo with the neighbor kids until my kid ran out and all that was left was adult.

Then I lay on the lawnchair concerned about more pressing things.

A Lingering Doubt

Articles - Posted by daria_4 on Monday, October 30, 2006
Experiences A number of months ago, I wondered when I would no longer be depressed.

Although I hadn't waited for a doctor to tell me so, I quit taking my medication quite a while ago. It started innocently enough; I was forgetting to take my pill, so it went from once daily to once every other day, to once every two days, to never. For the longest time, I thought just getting off the Kauffman would make me feel better, and while it was without a doubt the biggest factor, I have since come to realize that it took more than that. The medication helped. Therapy helped. Time helped.

Pressing Concerns

Articles - Posted by Monolycus on Monday, June 05, 2006
Experiences I'm not trying to say that world travellers are invulnerable. We are almost all of us perpetually down with the latest, greatest microbial infection making its rounds and it is not, after all, unheard of for one of us to go temporarily blind from food poisoning and hit our heads on the bathroom sink as we scramble around trying to remember which local dieties would be most appropriate for us to offer our firstborn to. I'm just saying that I wasn't particularly concerned about the fact that the guy driving the cab I was in was obviously trying very hard to get us both killed.

Graduation

Mistress Manners - Posted by callei on Saturday, April 15, 2006
Experiences So today I “graduated” from a 6 week therapy program thingy. I was in group therapy for about 9 hours a week. That is a lot of time to spend in a room with people drawing on whiteboard. Especially if you aren’t getting paid for it. But I did learn a few things that I want to share.

I Salute You!

Articles - Posted by Geist on Friday, February 10, 2006
Experiences This is a tribute to the nice guys. The nice guys that finish last, that never become more than friends, that endure hours of whining and bitching about what assholes guys are, while disproving the very point. This is dedicated to those guys who always provide a shoulder to lean on but restrain themselves to tentative hugs, those guys who hold open doors and give reassuring pats on the back and sit patiently outside the changing room at department stores. This is in honor of the guys that obligingly reiterate how cute/beautiful/smart/funny/sexy their female friends are at the appropriate moment, because they know most girls need that litany of support. This is in honor of the guys with open minds, with laid-back attitudes, with honest concern. This is in honor of the guys who respect a girl’s every facet, from her privacy to her theology to her clothing style.

Coming to Terms with Being

Illustrations - Posted by Domkitten on Monday, January 30, 2006
Experiences Fuck money. Fuck careers. Fuck women. I think that I if anything I have had to learn the hard way that learning to say fuck it is an incredibly important, zen experience that one must come to in order to officially stop being a child and grudgingly realize that being an adult just as silly as it sounded twenty years ago. Fuck youth and innocence as well, because the real truth is being true to who you are, and that cannot be so easily fucked away.

Heros I have known, or what I did on my evacu-cation.

Articles - Posted by callei on Wednesday, September 21, 2005
Experiences Heroes still exist and boy am I thankful that they do. As you all probably know, Shade and I used to (and will again!) live in New Orleans, sometimes called ground zero these days. We would still have been there if two heroes hadn't called us and made us leave. We would be in a shelter if two other heroes hadn’t allowed us to move in and live on their couch. Those heroes have also worked other miracles that have made life easier, nice, and more fun. The hero that made it so we knew how to contact these heroes also deserves a huge thanks. And the loving friends that have stayed up late, gotten up early, stayed on the phone or in chat, and generally wished us well, thanks again. Every kind thought and kind word has really made a difference.

Experiences As I traveled up to the moon the sun rose above our eyes and blinded only the darkness it had just broken. I stood atop the moon and looked up at the mountain I call home, so far away, surrounded by ocean blue. I know true that this is my home, Pele's playground, and I honor her, as i honor all deity and divinity. The feel of silver swords so softly killing me, I plunged head first into my love's darkest moon. When I openend my eyes, I knew, only love and beauty.

The Apartment

Experiences Prologue

I sit at the computer, and write. I don’t write for any specific reason, I just type. Letters to words, words to sentences, sentences to phrases, and voila, I’ve got myself a paragraph or two. I pause, I kill some time, I check my emails, hoping Gwen has wrote something back to me, I pause again, and a wave of empty hopelessness washes over me. It’s not that my situation, whatever that may be, is bad; it’s average at best.

Wexford town

Articles - Posted by blue on Sunday, January 09, 2005
Experiences It's amazing what a little distance can do for a person. In my case a round trip of 300 miles and 8 months at a computer. I've left behind an opinionated boyfriend, a bare yet paradoxically messy flat and my flat screen monitor, these being the components which have featured most prominently in my time away. But now I'm back in the town of my birth and the house of my childhood.

As I reached for the salt, I knocked the mug onto the floor, where it loudly became a mess of white porcelain and wet, half-cooked spaghetti. As I crouched down to inspect the unsalvageable spaghetti (dorm floor dust) I realized the mug was even less salvagable. written on its side were the words Robinson Memorial Hospital, 1990. Adventures at A Catholic college: An opportuinity lost

Disillusion - Posted by tallidaho on Friday, October 29, 2004
Experiences One can always tell the most about the personality of an entity by how it reacts to inordanate amounts of stress. Lately, this particular Catholic College has had more than it's fair share. A freshman football player committed suicide after finding out he was being prosecuted (in a civil case) for a rape that both the school judicial system and the public judicial system had cleared him of. One shot to the head, and it was over.

Experiences Dear Sirs,

It has come to my attention that the random searches being performed at boarding gates is not in fact random. Given that the planes I usually fly on hold 210 people, and there are usually 6 people searched for each flight, I should be searched about 2% of the times I fly, or 4% of the round trips. Since September ’01, I have been searched 50% of the times I’ve flown, or 100% of the round trips. After asking a gate agent a few times, he told me that the selections were not random but computer generated.

Pigs are Beautiful Creatures

Politics - Posted by Ironboots on Friday, October 08, 2004
Experiences July 28, about ten in the morning. The sun is just barely making it over the top of the ridge above us, driving off the horrible flies that persecute us in the shade. Burnt trees mingle with giant green old growth, while tons of raspberries grow beneath. I am sitting on the road, putting finishing touches on a walking stick I’m making. About two hundred feet down the road is a slash pile and a rock wall. Then about 50 feet behind me is another slash pile nestled under a web of ropes. These ropes lead off the road up to a platform 70 feet in the air. A red-headed girl named Kay Pittwald lives there on a single sheet of plywood. I admire her courage, not just being high up in the air, but I know she’ll probably be arrested if the cops try to take it all down.

Note: Names have been changed to Greek mythos to protect their identities. I tried to keep the names as similar to their personas as possible.

The Art of the Love Letter

How To - Posted by daria_4 on Wednesday, October 06, 2004
Experiences A good love letter can take many forms, but certain elements will make good into unforgettable for your reader. Don’t make the mistake of thinking love letters are only for the monogamous—just be sure to be fair handed and original if writing letters for multiple people in one big relationship. Love letters are also not exclusively for those who are head over heels in love. If done in the right tone and with lighthearted language, an appropriate “Love” letter can be drafted in a new relationship in which no one has even uttered the L-word yet.

Experiences I named him Waylan Jennings, because he was a Highwayman.

Specifically Highway 410 that runs from Puyallup, Wa east all the way up and over the Pass in Snoqualmie. He was five weeks old, and came bursting from the grass on the side of this increasingly busy stretch of two-lane blacktop to chase a bicyclist. I saw him from the corner of my eye as we passed, and yelled for the car to be stopped, to which my husband obliged. I bailed out before it had even coasted to a stop, and approached the bicyclist at a run, gasping "Is that your kitten?" He held up the ragged fluff of black, held him out to me and said "He looks like he's yours."

"They all are, eventually" I replied.

Last day

Articles - Posted by blue on Friday, August 13, 2004
Experiences Some days are stand apart. The little actions passed over in the somnambulance of everyday life. Today is special. Everything is sharp, infused with my breath. The walls seem higher, whiter. My father's hug tighter.

Tomorrow I will get up early. Dress with care. Walk alone the two miles to town.

It's been seven days. It's funny, that time seems so important. Sweetened with my worried tears. I have waited. Each morning awoke, my chest more taunt. Seven days since my last period was due.

I am prepared. Tomorrow I will take my library books back, drop off my pay in the bank. Take care of the simple things while I can. Tomorrow I will take the test. Tomorrow I will find out.

It’s a pattern we’ve all seen repeat itself over and over and over, perhaps in our own lives, and perhaps sitting outside, laughing at others going through it. The question stands, then, is there a way to do it correctly? I would say yes, although for each person, there are thousands of possible variations. Here’s one, offered for your consideration.

Having a car means we don't have to walk a mile in the cold to catch a bus and sit behind urine man while psycho lady in front of us blathers on about how the aliens are trying to bring back Kennedy clones to take over the rock and roll industry. It also means we had to fork over six hundred fifty dollars just to drive her off the lot, and then another hundred dollars to get her checked out and another hundred dollars to get the mildew smell out and... well, let me tell you a little story...

Norway, like most of the so called civilized world, is rapidly becoming a weird blueprint of (supposedly) American culture, or imperialism, as many of my friends would choose to call it.

Manifesto of Singlehood

Preach - Posted by tallidaho on Wednesday, November 12, 2003
Experiences Others choose to couple, to devote themselves to one another in loving, hopefully faithful, and mutually beneficial relationships. I do not. I have too much love, care, passion, and personality to give it all to one person. I love every human being. This love can be and is care, concern, sexuality, listening, advice, observation, spirituality, silence, screaming, everything, and sometimes, when needed, nothing.

Tales from a Teenage Wasteland- The Junkie's House

Illustrations - Posted by Meranda_Jade on Thursday, November 06, 2003
Experiences I remember a time in my life when my whole existence was in the hands of adult children. The kind who would sell the food stamps for drugs. There were six actual children in all. Living in a flophouse where the adults were far less grown-up than we were, and much more dangerous.

Streams of Hope

Articles - Posted by Squire-of-Gothos on Monday, October 27, 2003
Experiences Occasionally, we as people lose sight of where we're going. Individually, or in groups, we encounter turning points that make life seem like a crazy dream. When it seems like all is lost, and you try to find something in life that makes it worth it, and you come up empty. When you look around at yourself and you wish it wasn't your skin. When you think about yourself, and you wish you weren't you. Sometimes I feel like what I'm doing right now and every instant before and after it, is a total waste. But everything's not lost.

Broken Promises

Shmeng of the Week - Posted by daria_4 on Tuesday, September 23, 2003
Experiences "How did you find me?"
Those weren't the first words out of his mouth, but they were the first of any consequence. "Hey, how are you?" is a worthless phrase whether it's been ten days or ten years between conversations. I wasn't paying attention during the small talk anyway. I was distracted by the fact that I didn't even recognize his voice. Maybe it was the phone--they do that to peoples' voices sometimes. Funny, the phone I was on two years ago didn't mask my father's voice.

The truth about me

Articles - Posted by daria_4 on Wednesday, September 17, 2003
Experiences One would think that as a military member--particularly the female variety--I would be more useful not pregnant than the other way around. In this spirit, to ask for sterilization would not seem like an unreasonable request. Apparently, I am not only wrong, but I am way the hell off base. I haven’t even made it to the field. “Not until you’re 35 and have at least three kids.” Three kids!?! Are you fucking kidding me? “And if you don’t have any, no doctor will do it until you’re so close to menopause that it won’t be worth it.”

The Sadness of Places

Articles - Posted by Kira on Saturday, September 13, 2003
Experiences

I first began to understand the sadness of places when I was 10 years old. I was riding in the car with my parents; sharing the back seat with my grandma (who incidentally in her 70-some years never learned to drive) and watching the scenery go by. This was about ten years before the monoculture totally moved into the small city with huge Wal-Marts and Meijers on every corner, but the seeds of it were already showing. As the Krogers, Sunocos, and cookie-cutter suburbs passed by the window my grandma suddenly became very quiet. It was my dad who finally picked up on her thoughts, and broke the silence. “Sure does look a lot different these days, doesn’t it?” he posed. My grandma was very close to tears. In a broken voice she related that when she was a freshly married young woman the Krogers and Sunocos were nothing but wide open fields, where she and my grandpa would visit to get away from the city and enjoy a walk or a picnic. My grandpa was gone; and so were the places they used to visit. Soon, she would be gone as well.

Epitaph

Experiences I've been gone for awhile...at least a month or two by my count, it's been hard to figure time lately. Anyways, I'll keep this as to the point as possible. This is an Epitaph to someone who will never have one, this is a remembrance of mine about someone I knew and cared for that isn't around anymore, and I write this out here...because this is the only place where I can find people I think would understand her, and maybe give thought to her in a good way.

Should I tell you about the first time we thought we had wings? We stayed up all night and Devin talked for six straight hours. He told me his entire life story, with pictures.

How about his blind-folded birthday?

Maybe you'd like to hear the story about the waitress I had a little crush on but was much too shy to talk to? Devin slipped her my number and then giggled while I attempted to crawl under the table.

Let me tell you about Fergus...

Drug control - or how good things can go really wrong, really fast

Articles - Posted by Poison on Thursday, August 14, 2003
Experiences I’m writing in reference to two topics I remember reading about on Shmeng. One is Sindel’s screwed up vacation and the other is an article I read a long time ago, about how drug stores try to sell their stuff no matter if it’s good for you or not. I’m also writing this to share my experience and maybe stop others from going through it, because two weeks have passed from this horrible thing and I still freak myself out thinking about it.

I ain't seen those kids I ran into last time there, though I met them again, and thats another story. It's a small place really...and most of the people there are salt of the earth types. A few farmers who speak little or no english, a couple indians looking to get drunk and forget their hurt for awhile, and a few others who are reaching out to the edges.

I see my oldest children accepting my life style (which I hid for much of their lives) and notice that my “gothness” was never in the exterior, although in my youth, clung to the dark and the music, it was ....ME! My views, philosophies, have all come round in them, and they never even realized it.

EMPSK's

Wanted - Posted by Dolorosa on Wednesday, May 07, 2003
Experiences Living with my folks for the past couple of month after my return from the military has spawned a few interesting events. So far, it's fairly easy...they respect my privacy, and I theirs. My mom has a hard time accepting the fact that I'm planning on leaving again soon, but she supports me well. In all honesty, no fights or anything like that...but recently something interesting and kind of funny popped up. While looking in my room for her boom box, my mom came across my EPSKs, and they confused the hell out of her. For those not in the know, EPSK stands for "Emergency Paranormal Situation Kit".

Oh Holy Night

Articles - Posted by Comedian on Friday, December 20, 2002
Experiences Night can be a magical time in winter. The cold makes things sharper, the lights are darker on Earth, but brighter in the sky. The moon shines with clarity unimaginable; it's face and every detail of it for people to view with the naked eye.

I had forgotten how much I love the winters in the mountains. Between storms, there is a wide crack in the clouds, like a river passing through the sky, rich black-gray-blue ground, rippling and moving, while a clear river of the heavens passes through the great dome of the sky. A river of stars, sharp and beautiful and bright, and the moon like a giant fish or pebble at some point in it while it move slowly downstream, that beautiful silver-white that shines make the land light.

A group of young men engage in a kind of rap debate in the back of the bus; leaning out into the aisle from the back seats that face each other and slapping hands and shaking and talking all at the same time. As the exchange hastens it's amazing to watch; they take turns each involing in two seperate conversations along different strains and joining in the middle somewhere, crossing, and slipping away again with different partners. The four of them trade hands and slaps and laughs to show agreement or belief; high-five to make different points that their peers or to show diusagreement with the other's opinion. What sullies the experience is that they are talking about how women are just out to get your money.

Experiences Its taken me a long time to actually come up with a good enough reason to voice up. By nature I'm one of those people that stays in the background watching everyone else make mistakes or triumph and take the glory while merely sighing and shaking my head at those whom don't deserve it. By this I speak more often than not of the people that have taken things such as the war too seriously and have brought it on our own home turf. Though I read in the newspaper everyday about people fighting, its the articles I read about people fighting other people without a real reason why that hurt the most.

The Schizo Drama, Episode 6

Articles - Posted by Schizo on Monday, December 03, 2001
Experiences Yes, I know, it's me again. There seems to be a lot of postable stuff having to do with pregnancy and the sucky losers who get you that way. But, I promise, this is the last for a while, since once again I am going to be computerless.

Note: The last episode can be found here

Feature - Posted by Meranda_Jade on Friday, November 02, 2001
Experiences Rogue and I just got back from a week of visiting our relatives in Dayton, OH... Considering the talk lately of alternative relationships, I thought I'd share what happened on our night out on the town...

Why are we the ones?

Articles - Posted by Arthegarn on Monday, October 29, 2001
Experiences Last friday I didn't go to Madrid to the Goth clubs as usual. I just decided to stay in Torrejon, where I live, with a couple of goth friends of mine. It all went well, we stayed in a friend's bar until she closed, had some beers, then moved to another.

growing up

Articles - Posted by Xaoswolf on Tuesday, October 02, 2001
Experiences Well, today I turn 21, and with it I find new responsabilities, and I'm not talking about drinking either. I was just offered a full time LAN Tech. job at the company that I was doing an internship. I've finally reached that point in life where I realized that it's time to grow up...

The poor kitty has been puking her ancient guts out allll weeeek and finally three days ago quit trying to eat or drink because even a taste of water would come right back up.

Feelings...wish I never met you

Articles - Posted by Poison on Tuesday, August 28, 2001
Experiences I read somewhere that Goth is about reclaiming our shadows, cherishing them and treasuring them. The things we tried so hard to bury in the past now come back up to the surface, demanding to be released.

Note: I made quite a few edits to this story - I made no changes to the content, but if I somehow changed the meaning of something, please let me know and I'll fix it (this goes for all posts, fyi) -ickgirl

My shot at being cordial

Articles - Posted by Andree on Sunday, August 26, 2001
Experiences I've decided to stop being reclusive and post something. And I'm not even going to complain, because soon enough I'll find plenty of things to whine about, with school starting and such. I'm going to be positive for a change. Here goes.

Today I burried a child.

Articles - Posted by bettie_x on Sunday, August 12, 2001
Experiences Today I buried a child. I just wanted to inform you that my bloved rat stella was killed by my dog. I never thought that a death of something so small could wreck me so bad.

She was a skittish but loving member of the family and is survived by her sister Poppy, and two neices nico and lucy.

The only goth in my school!

Articles - Posted by Comedian on Sunday, August 12, 2001
Experiences There was one goth at my high school-- and view this not as a retrospective long-time view, but as in 6 months ago retrospect. The girl came in with three weeks left of school. She wore black overalls, came with a painted face, black skirt and long black shirt of Siousxie and the Banshees, in a little white pattern in the center. She had a Gaelic pattern in black face paint coming off the side of her left eye, and a hello kitty backpack. She sat behind me and to the left.

Rats, Bats, Flats

Feature - Posted by Devin on Thursday, August 09, 2001
Experiences Preamble:
Ok, first I need to give a little scenery, then I'll get to the story and the ramblings and the questions. This is really amusing, and I have no idea what to do.

Note: (For anyone who didn't catch it, this story doubles as a tutorial on how to write a shmeng post. The posts are getting a little too short, and I'd like to start getting a little more content in them)

This is an actual dream I had once...

Articles - Posted by Schizo on Sunday, July 29, 2001
Experiences The princess peered through the bars of her cell, straining her eyes to see in the gloom of the dungeon. The vastness of the subterranean cavern stretched before her, and she could only barely see the layers of cells on the opposite wall. All was quiet.

big rager

Articles - Posted by sorceress_ly on Friday, June 29, 2001
Experiences I love parties and I love to host them, don't get me wrong. As part of the freak-majors I decided that we would have a rager. (in texas a rager is a freak party) We had this rager wensday and I was affraid that no one would show so I invited every one that I knew that was goth or freaky in some way. Well I invited to many people and soon the small outdoor party that I wanted to throw was a huge indoor mess because it started to rain around one, and every one ran inside and stayed there.

Subtleties of Culture Shock

Disillusion - Posted by Devin on Friday, June 22, 2001
Experiences The coolest thing almost just happened. I was driving home from work, and when I drove by the park, there was some people playing music. I instantly flashed back to when I was in high school in Hawaii. We used to have no place to play music, so we'd just go set up at the park and see who showed up, and play until the cops kicked us out. I was thinking "Yay! Home!" as I turned around and parked and went to sit on the grass and listen.

Shmeng of the Week - Posted by ickgirl on Wednesday, May 30, 2001
Experiences Flying. or airports. or airport delays. or TURBULANCE. or storms while you are flying. or smelly people on the plane. or the fact that no matter where you are on the plane, the smelly people's smell gets blown right in your face. or when you hear a sound like something smacking the side of the plane and you're sure it must be part of the engine.

Note: I got in this morning from New York City. I flew from NYC to St. Louis and then from St. Louis to Seattle. Turbulance from hell, I couldn't get a drink to save my life, AND they didn't feed us.

The Intricacies of Luggage

Articles - Posted by callei on Monday, May 28, 2001
Experiences My husband and I are going to France in June. Its an anniversary present. Just think, Paris! 10 days and nights and me with only one suitcase! I searched and scrambled all over the net looking for guides on what to pack, how to minimize, how to live out of a carry on, and so forth. If you are a backpacker, there is help for you. If you are a business traveler, there is help for you. If you are a goth with 3 favorite skirts, 2 favorite dresses, 2 favorite pairs of pants, a corsette that goes everywhere with you, and a husband who's makeup kit is almost as big as yours, there is no help. Did I mention that I fall into the catagory of "big hair goth"? At least I can be rational about shoes.....
