Shade died on October 25th (ish)2015, a few days before he would have turned 40. I didn't get confirmation that it was really him until December 22. I was at work when they called with confirmation.

Rogue just convinced me to fix the Karma system that has been keeping people from posting for the last few years. I can't guarantee that everything else will work - in fact, I know there are a few things that are just broken. I don't have the time or motivation to fix them right now, but at least by fixing the karma, people will be able to post and try to motivate me to fix more.

As most people know, we recently went through one of our fairly routine Shmeng purges. Noisy idiots and twits of all varieties had been growing like weeds, and had been neglected to the point that they seemed likely to overtake all that makes Shmeng worth-while. Unfortunately, weeding, especially with well-rooted weeds, tends to cause disruption in the soil of a garden, and the roots of many valuable plants can become dislodged in the process. When this happens, it is necessary to re-seat the roots, and baby the plants until they recover. Also, it is necessary to keep weeding, lest the weeds choke out the flowers again.

I have been holding an intense discussion with one of our newer members for about a week now on the nature of Shmeng... not the term, but the site. I have been giving it a great deal of thought. The definition that came to mind was a community: A group of people having common interests; or sharing, participation, and fellowship. In the conversation, I outlined community as a group of like-minded individuals. But it went much more in depth than that.

Generally seen as antagonistic, apologetic, and asinine, they are boring, banal, and bothersome at the best of times. At the worst of times, they are capricious, constipated, and corny. Once upon a time, long, long, ago, I, yes I, Schizo, Mother Confessor, was once a newbie. A dismal little wide-eyed, wet-behind-the-ears, nervous little newbie. This was back in the days when Shmeng was bran-spankin-new, and most people stuck to the older Gothic Enlightenment (like Bettie X, who was one of the last to succumb!)

I know everyone wants to contribute and to be heard. It's a major part of the human psyche to want to reach out and feel someone else there. We understand. We want to reach out too and to feel someone there, we are just tired of it being something icky and messy. We have never bothered to formalize the rules out what we want in a submission before, because we had this insane belief that people would get it and we wouldn't have to. We were wrong. Either that or we just can't stand slogging through term papers about pants, wishful and misguided wannabe porn, or more diary entries. Here is a list of things of things that we would like to see in the incoming folder in future.

This one goes out to all the moderators out there. Grow the fuck up, or opt the hell out. ITs embarassing to see someone only moderate comments on thier "friends" article, and fail to do thier job on any of the others. Its embarassing to see someone, no matter what thier comments are, get twited EVERY TIME. Its embarassing to see articles get 2 scores only; a 5 and a 1. Its embarassing to have a moderator on the warned list.

I’ve noticed something wrong with Shmeng. Something very wrong. Now, I can understand why it’s on here. If I were in the position of the adults on Shmeng I’d probably do it too. What is this horrible wrongness I’ve seen? Kid bashing. Not only does it make me feel bad it’s also hypocritical. I’m sure when the adults were our age they were similar. This is a request for comments on the subject of picture copyrights on this site. I usually do this kind of thing as a poll, but those are multiple choice and I think this subject calls for more verbose answers. I think the current rules are working ok at keeping people from posting other people's pictures here, but now I'm trying to figure out how to keep people from stealing pictures off of this site and claiming they are their own. I don't like the idea of sticking a shmeng.com copyright notice on other people's pix. I was thinking maybe a "found on shmeng.com" notice, which would make some sites not accept them, but not all sites have that policy or check pictures. Another option is to require a copyright notice on all submitted pictures, but some people barely have the technology to submit pictures, much less write on them. And what about the 420 (yes there's exactly 420 right now) pictures already posted? Post your ideas in the comments please. Thanks, -Devin-

Well, I just got another email from someone complaining that they can't get to this site because it's being blocked by censorware. I could do the responsible, mature adult thing and email the authors of said censorware. This would possibly get me an automated response stating that maybe a human would read my email someday. Well, it's time again for some spring cleaning. I've been thinking a lot about how to change the way this site is run so that we can get rid of some of the stupid, useless shmeng that's been floating around. I'm flattered that so many people are finding this site entertaining, and wanting to participate. But we've come to the point where it's time to decide whether to have a big popular site, or a smaller cozyer one. Everyone important has voted with their comments, and the verdict is in. The only thing that annoys me more than "Models" with no pictures of themselves is fakecakes using other people's pix to represent themselves online. I used to talk to them in chat rooms all the time. Usually they'd pick a model out of a gothic clothing catalog or something. It's nothing new for people to be posting fake pix on this site - But getting two of them in the same day made me have to say something.

Ok, look. STOP POSTING POETRY. Last time you heard from me on this topic, I didn’t really care – Fine, I said, post your damn poetry. But, people….I must inform you, it’s become a fucking epidemic. Every day I look at the submissions and its 75% poetry. Why? Because long ago Devin and I realized that people were submitting poems, and to be honest, we didn’t want to put them on the front page, so he made a separate column for it. We thought, ok, no big deal, we’ll just stuff the poetry over there, keep people happy…you get the idea. I’ve come to realize, poetry isn’t something we can do in moderation. It’s like heroin, or coffee. Now, maybe you’re thinking “what’s wrong with poetry?” Nothing. But what IS wrong is that this site, which was constructed as a means to discuss the shmeng we all face in our lives, has become a forum for adolescent poetry (and let’s not forget the “I’m hotter than she is” girldrama)...
