Chivalry vs. Chauvinism

Articles - Posted by Psychopixi on Thursday, December 28, 2006
Rant Well, being chivalrous and being chauvinistic are pretty much worlds apart, but the thing that brings them together is the fact that both are sexist. Your typical chauvinist pig isn't exactly a master at subtlety, and the sexual discrimination is frank, up front and in your face. The men who consider themselves gentlemen don't seem to realise the sexism they're guilty of.

Fresh and Pure from Southern California

Disillusion - Posted by Squire-of-Gothos on Sunday, October 24, 2004
Rant I once knew a fascinating example of how wrong society can go, the way it goes about purging humanity, and leaving a husk of broken ideals and mish-mashed morals. You, and many others like you can observe or have observed people, places, and things that epitomize the failures of the human mind- the corpse left after the hellfire and storm. You and many others may posses just such qualities, irksome maladies that infect you for life, cling to your mind and body like a cancer, and seep puss and hate wherever you walk. This is a life I know and live, day by day, without tears, and without mercy. But specifically, in this instance, I observed (rather than participated) where the world went wrong, and what excrement it left behind. I viewed this person at first as just that- a human, possessing potential, life, goals, stubble, and spirit. This, and so much more, is what a person can be.

Love

Mistress Manners - Posted by callei on Sunday, March 14, 2004
Rant It has come to my attention lately that many people actually believe that "LOVE conquers all". Now LOVE can make a skinned knee stop hurting so much, a bad day fade quickly, or sad life more joyous, but it doesn't heal the scrape, make the boss nicer, or feed an empty belly. At most, it can distract you from other things, for a while. And is it really a good thing to be unaware of the actual state that you are in?

Fuck off

Preach - Posted by callei on Friday, March 12, 2004
Rant I had the strangest sensation reading Shmeng today. I realized that it is the source of the most shmeng in my day-to-day life. I realized that it had become the "them" to my personal "us". When I first started coming here, it was just a test and a bulletin board to bitch about failing that test. I was the sort of thing you went back to, say once a week, to see if there was any new ranting twits and to tease them. Then some of us started commenting on other people's comments and *poof* a very small community was formed, a very small group of "us". The cult was born.

Spice in the Vanilla Rack

Articles - Posted by Devin on Wednesday, March 10, 2004
Rant Everyone has some kind of vague idea of what kind of relationship would make him or her happy. Some people are even pretty clear on what kind of people they are attracted to. I'm constantly hearing people talking about their soul mate, or saying, "maybe I've found The One". I've found that the best thing to do is to keep my mouth shut and not say a word - but I shouldn't have to.

Leadership

Articles - Posted by daria_4 on Monday, February 02, 2004
Rant A few weeks ago, I was made to read an essay about leadership that won some contest eons ago. I could forgive the sexist tone, as it was written during a time when women were barely candy stripers in the military. I was still disgusted with its generally warmongering, ethnocentric tone, though. There were a few gems to be found; some of which my boss could stand to take notes on, but that’s another bit of shmeng in my life for another time.

First Aid (Adventures at a Catholic College Pt. 3)

Politics - Posted by tallidaho on Thursday, October 23, 2003
Rant There is supposed to be an "ethic of care" at this college. As I have had it explained to me, this involves several things. First, it means everyone is supposed to care about everyone else. Second, it means the school values the student over any political, social, or ECONOMIC gain. Just keep those in mind as I explain what has happened in the past 5 hours.

I didn’t collar you, I am not your wet dream, and, frankly, I have better things to do that sort out the confused and unformed lusts of a newbie that is sooo new that they don’t even know enough to ask first. College Sex

Politics - Posted by tallidaho on Tuesday, August 05, 2003
Rant Attending Catholic school when one is not A) Catholic or B) Christian is always a bit of an experience. Not that it is an experience I didn't set myself up for, in agreeing to attend Carroll College, but I am daily amazed at the lengths some of the administration, and students, will go through to basically screw themselves over. By no means is this unique to a religious school, but that overtone certainly seems to add to the "logical confusion" that permeates the entire campus.

This Vacation Was Brought to You By: Satan

Politics - Posted by callei on Sunday, March 30, 2003
Rant I think some of the places that we fall down when gauging this "war on terrorism" is when we try to decide what we think in terms of what we feel. Are the figureheads "good" or "evil"? Are other countries "against us"? What or who is "unpatriotic"? Do we have the "right" to "invade"? These are all emotional feelings, not logical ideas, yet they are debated as some sort of fact.

Overpopulation: Solution

Humor - Posted by Geist on Monday, January 20, 2003
Rant There is an immediate threat looming over our lives, a threat menacing in its locality and severity. The Earth is being subverted by overpopulation, and it's all because of the Irish. This filthy race of humans has striven for years to outnumber the rest of the world by reproducing over and over, feeding their need to procreate with thick ale and lilting flute music. There is only one way to stop the Irish, and that is by splicing all of the world's potato and barley crops with a genetic disorder, Klinefelter's Syndrome. Through consumption of genetically mutated crops, the Irish will become infertile, thereby guaranteeing their extinction. Our world will be freed from the burden of the Irish, ensuring peace, harmony, ponies, and unbiased love.

Overpopulation: Problem

Humor - Posted by Geist on Wednesday, January 15, 2003
Rant The Earth's population growth is equivalent to around three babies per second. Frankly, there are too many people here already for us to be popping out any more. Starvation, homelessness, and overcrowding are standard occurrences for humans. I can't walk down the street during the day without someone bumping into me, and it's not always because of their stupidity: there just isn't enough room for every person to live comfortably. People need to stop having babies.

Words Words Everywhere and Not a Thing to Read

Drama - Posted by callei on Friday, September 27, 2002
Rant It is my great joy and my terrible misfortune to be adequately educated in my mother tongue and to enjoy the written word. The ambivalence that I experience when I approach the Internet is therefore, at times, quite severe. The first rule

Theories - Posted by Alugarde on Friday, September 20, 2002
Rant Sin's recent post has compelled me to ask this question that has been bothering me for some time. Before I start know that I'm not trying to attack anyone, I'm just curious.

It has been said that the first rule of goth is denial. Is it just me or does that seem like a little too much though? Say that person A dresses gothic and is interested in many things that are considered gothic (whatever those may be), but claims not to be goth.

But Goth is a stereotype. Wether or not you realize it, most people have a preconceived notion (ie stereotype) of what goth is.

To exaggerate the scenario lets say person A fits 99.9% of the common conception of what goth is, but still claims to not be goth because of that .1%

Am I missing something? When did everyone make the assumption that if you're not 100% pure blood goth you arent goth at all? Like it or not everyone has to eventually put themselves into some sort of a lable or category for the sake of simplicity.

I forget who said it, but somewhere on this site someone said something to the effect of "My theory: I'm goth becuase thats the quickest and easiest way I can describe to you what I am without long drawn out explanations"

I couldn't agree more.

Have A Cigar

Articles - Posted by Monolycus on Saturday, March 02, 2002
Rant I have a friend (and no, that is not a euphemism for myself) who imagines that he is a great deal more clever than he probably is. He has spent the past few years in sunny California in a fruitless attempt to pitch ideas to various network executives for the production of different television shows he has envisioned. He writes to me on a semi-regular basis to kvetch about how the latest attempt has gone and the reasons that he has been given for his most recent rejection. Although he has yet to pick up on it, I have noticed that, nearly invariably, the reasons his ideas have been shot down are that they are (in the opinions of those who produce and market short attention spans for a living) too cerebral. "No market for it", "That could only find an audience on PBS", and "Huh...?" seem to be the standard responses as they are related to me.

Rant This is stupid. It takes a terrorist threat on bridges for people to figure out how to drive across a damn bridge. I have been driving across the Narrows Bridge for years. The Transportation Dept. has been trying to figure out how to fix the problem of congestion on it for as long as I can remember. They've passed a bill that will cost taxpayers millions to fix the problem. They've even raised the speed limit on it to 55mph and people still do anywhere from 5mph to 35mph across it.

Not not-so-deadly diseases where only ten people have died,
but PREPS!!!!!
I see them, every day, but I don't complain.

Today was an all around sucky day

Articles - Posted by Xaoswolf on Sunday, October 28, 2001
Rant It started when I found out the my cat ran off when my sister took him to work. He had pulled off the collar that the leash was on then ran under her car and dissapeared. She was in histerics all day. I was pissed at first, then just worried about him.

The saga continues

Articles - Posted by tallidaho on Saturday, October 27, 2001
Rant This is just reaching rediculous proportions. Read "The Curse of the Backstabbers" first, and then read this. I just got stood up. Again. I asked a guy that seemed really nice to the Sadie Hawkins dance, which is tonight, for the double date my friend and I had set up.

A Farewell and a Final Rant

Articles - Posted by Schizo on Thursday, October 25, 2001
Rant I'm afraid I will no longer be able to visit Shmeng. My computer, which is rented, will be going back from whence it came. My boyfriend, whose responsibility it is to pay for it, hasn't for the past few weeks. The only reason we haven't been hauled off to debtor's prison is that we just moved, and the rental company doesn't have our new address or phone number.
Now for the rant.

Laws, What would you ban?

Articles - Posted by BlueLinn on Thursday, October 18, 2001
Rant Many things in this current civilization could be done without. Many laws and social taboos are out of line and completely bogus. Where did our government fail? How do we allow ourselves to fall into these social and political boundaries? Easy, we get sucked into the conflicts of those who are popular only because no blemish marrs their beautiful faces. And perfect bodies are the norm in this Mattel Barbie, and Silicon influenced world. If I were to create my own civilization, if it were possible, I would wish for a pure and simple Utopia. However because we are only human, and human nature flourishes around our violent tendencies, Only three laws that I would ban shall grace this page. No, they are not all government laws, nor are they all social taboos or bans. Though predominantly social, these laws are as follows....

The curse of Backstabbers

Articles - Posted by tallidaho on Wednesday, October 17, 2001
Rant Why am I cursed? Maybe anyone out there with more experience with "other-worldly" or "paranormal" things, or just curses in general could help me out with this, but just read and comment if you want to, 'cause I'm steamed as hell about it. Every guy I have ever even attempted to flirt with that hasn't turned me down cold has done much worse- backstabbed me! GRRRR!

If these are the best years of my life, I'm killing myself

Articles - Posted by tallidaho on Friday, October 12, 2001
Rant Rant about this, rant about that. I seem to rant a lot. Anyway- this hour's topic- High School. That torture that it seems every human being (or at least 90% of Americans) are required to experience. Before I get really into this rant though, I feel I must explain a couple of things.

The World Is FULL of Idiots

Articles - Posted by NightSide on Thursday, August 30, 2001
Rant I just set up a small store on my web site to sell some used electronics that I have had around for too long, and some other things like Tarot cards and an Axel ring using the PayPal store/shopping cart that you can add to your site.... Oh but I was wrong.... Check this out...

Reasons I have to vomit when I open my front door.

Articles - Posted by fergshmuck on Saturday, August 25, 2001
Rant I know that I am phenomenally far from perfect. I know I have some bad habits like taking things for granted, not being able to look past "face value" sometimes, being bossy, being spineless, and so on. I could sit here all night listing off things that make me something not to be proud of. However, compared to people I've met, seen, heard from, and been insulted by, I could very easily apply for the position of the next child of God.

Note: The link to the picture worked the first time I tried it, second time I got a "for member's only" thing. Anyway, I'm sure you can use your imagination

The return to hell.. err.. highschool.

Articles - Posted by zoeaurora on Friday, August 24, 2001
Rant Thats right, point and laugh, I have to return for another year of bread and circuses. The only thing worse than the public school systems budget is their students. Granted I've made friends, I've somehow become the goth chick, despite my tendancies to wear rave style pants and babydoll shirts. They've struck me with the proverbial labeling gun.

Note: Time for high school story swapping? -ickgirl

People who compete

Articles - Posted by fergshmuck on Friday, August 03, 2001
Rant There are people who you meet, in the street or online, who, at first, make you smile and think, "Wow. This person rocks and being buddies with them is gonna rock." The next time you see them, you mention something you like and that you really put alot of your faith/devotion/whatever into your liking for it. The person you thought was so cool then proceeds to shoot it down because, of course, their opoinions are RIGHT and that person is GOD and you suck because you're the only one defending this thing that you like.

The Resident Christian's Personal Rant

Articles - Posted by Schizo on Friday, July 27, 2001
Rant OK. Just to warn you, this is Schizo the Christian suddenly poking her head out of her cave. This is not an attempt at evangelization. This is merely a rant about all the arguments people throw at me about how mean God is. I figure, if people can post things that are anti-Christianity, I can post something in defense. So don't say I didn't warn you!

My Day, a painful voyage.

Articles - Posted by Comedian on Friday, July 20, 2001
Rant My alarm clock no longer wakes me in the morning anymore. Not that I had an alarm clock, but now that I do, it's chirp and cry is superseded by the cries of the Hispanic workers outside my window screaming "PUTA!" and "ANOS!" at eachother, in a odd attempt to repremand the same people that they will go drinking with later today. But that's the way friends are to eachother in the -- bloody hell, what do we call the 2000's years?

I hate meatheads!

Articles - Posted by Kira on Tuesday, July 10, 2001

SO, what is a meathead? I present the following informative essay:

Rant I have no purpose of writing except to say, I am SICK! Real sick. These past few months have been one thing after another. From painful pissing ,to breast lumps, to emergency room visits, and now this. What is this? I don't know - I think last weekend's rendez-vous at the good old Chuck-E-Cheese with a bunch of kids must have exposed me to some tummy virus, and now I feel like D-E-A-T-H.

Fatal Attraction:How do you Break the ties that bind??

Articles - Posted by Rae on Saturday, June 16, 2001
Rant I met Jennifer almost a year ago, she felt lonely, needed a friend, and I, being the huge empath that I am, befriended her. Everything went well with our friendship at first, we would sit and make each other laugh until we cried and have some of the most deep heart felt discussions that normally you wouldn't share with someone else. It was refreshing to have someone to share my deepest inner emotions with, I trusted her completely.

Goth Visits the Local Unemployment Agency

Articles - Posted by Schizo on Friday, June 15, 2001
Rant I think the scariest place I have been in a long time is my local unemployment agency.

Having been laid off of my wonderful job as a machine operator at a dismal little factory on Monday, I finally mustered up the courage to face the humiliation of joining the ranks of the officially certified unemployed.

I'm Afraid of Americans

Articles - Posted by callei on Friday, June 15, 2001
Rant Ok I just got back from France. "Everyone" says that the French are rude, and especially the Parisienes. The only rude people that I ran into over there were Americans. Hell the Germans were more friendly, War verterans were kind in comparison (and generally crippled 80 year olds are a bit cantanlerous!)

Explaining to friends that I've 'Gone Goth'

Articles - Posted by Schizo on Wednesday, May 30, 2001

Methamphetamine Freaks

Shmeng of the Week - Posted by cannibal_grrl on Thursday, May 24, 2001
Rant So now I'm reacclimated to San Diego itself, but one highly prevalent aspect of this place, that I've never been used to, is meth freaks/tweekers. Everywhere I look, I find more of them, and since one of them is living in this apartment, there is no escape. Where there is one tweeker, there will be several more...they form crazy little colonies of overly-amped, paranoid, and aggressive people. They stay awake for days, and when they fall asleep, one would have better luck raising the dead than waking them.

Cats

Shmeng of the Week - Posted by ickgirl on Thursday, May 24, 2001
Rant Shmeng of the day ? or something I happen to be thinking about right now that bothers me.

Waking up before it's even light outside because the person you are in bed with has to get up early, and then your cats decide it must be morning so they run around like maniacs trying to get you to get up and feed them breakfast and then you have to pee really really bad so you get up and it's freezing so you hop back into bed but can't fall back to sleep and before you know it the alarm is going off and it's time for YOU to get out of bed and then you find yourself at work writing run-on sentences to strangers.

Reacclimation to San Diego

Articles - Posted by cannibal_grrl on Monday, May 07, 2001
Rant So, I've moved off of peaceful Vashon Island, WA, where there was plenty of open space, fresh air, and quiet times. Now I'm back in San Diego, and am going through shock, surrounded by concrete, people, smog, and loud polka/circus-like Mexican music fills the air.

Seattle Common Law Marriage Law

Shmeng of the Week - Posted by Devin on Sunday, March 18, 2001
Rant Once I was at a bar. There was some random girl standing next to me. I hardly noticed her, and I don't think she noticed me either. I think we were both just chillin watching the dance floor. I never even looked at her more than to think "oh she's not my type", but we were standing there for quite a while. So totally randomly, this guy comes up to me and asks me if he can dance with my wife. He points to the girl. Do people get more stupid?I'm sure they do.

Rhetoric

Articles - Posted by Devin on Saturday, December 30, 2000
Rant Dammit people, stop listening to everything everyone tells you. Think for yourself a little. When I hear arguments that start with "God Says", or end with "That's just how it is". My ears shut off. It's cliche already. I've heard those lines so many times that my brain doesn't even hear them anymore. It just attaches a bozo label to the image of the person and files it away. I can't be the only one who does this.
