Ok here is the deal kids. I supply two sentences, the first two, from things waiting in the slush pile. You all get to chose which ones you want to read. I have included names, since some of them are popular or usually a good read, or easy to spot as a bad read. I have only included the first two sentances so you wont know how long the article is or, really, what it says. Here is how we play the game…
If you want to read the rest of one of these, comment and say so. If someone else has already said they want to read that same one, then comment UNDER their comment.
If you don’t want to read something, like really really don’t want to see it, then comment and say so. If you don’t want to read something and someone has already said they don’t want to read it too, then comment under them as well.

DO NOT EMAIL ME TO ASK FOR FAVORS, EXCLUSIONS, OR FREE SEX.

Someone once told me that "shit happens." It's a common enough phrase, I mean, hell...who hasn't heard that or said that at least once in their lives, if not several times. (dolo)
The phrase that follows, that shit happens wholesale, is about my favorite of this whole group of articles.

Twisted spires and crying choirs, this my home is made of. Precious treasures dressed in their sunday best, my brothers my lovers, my catches all. (dolo)
I think this is fanciful reality stuff

Imagine you are in a room. Four walls surround you and there is a very high ceiling above you. (zero)
Plato meets Romper Room

There are times when you think you've figured it all out and life lays naked before your eyes, so you don't have to pay attention to anything around you anymore. Then something happens to you that changes your life, shutters your warm little comfy theories - and you start thinking you were wrong. (inward)
Chances are, if you think you have life figured out, that you are wrong

In order to properly discuss this topic three main questions will have to be taken into consideration: What were the layout, ritual practice and symbolic meaning of a Medieval monastery, and what example best portrays this? What does Plato discuss in his Timaeus, which has relevance to this topic. (Abbadon)
What can I say, it’s a term paper

The rain that fell was almost of no consequence. He had been trained and had experience that a task like this was little more then an annoyance, but the old man had said he would pay him well if he accomplished the task. (Moinlen_Drigenu)
More fiction, but at least it isn’t too long

The chatter inside my head has been roaring just a bit louder than usual lately. Deep inside the din of noises, I can hear the distant sound of my own reasoning trying desperately to be heard. (Starlight)
I hear you sister.

It occurred to me that violence in general has run rampant. This is not a staggering statement, as humans in general are violent people when together, mob mentality rules, there is no thought put toward decisions. (pale-face)
It makes you wonder how “society” came to be at all

Hello!
My name is Meg... (marilynmegson)
and Im a shmengaholic….

how is love supposed to feel to every other person out there in this fucked up world? i feel like i am the only one that feels like dying because they love someone soo much. (bunnyinwonderland)
Yeah no one has ever felt like that before no matter what Shakespeare said

i dont know much about anybody in here, but it occurs to me that a lot of my friends disagree with me over music because i dont listen to what they do. i listen to everything and anything i can get my hands on, because i am a musician and i beleive i should listen to and learn everything. (fireflyer)
I don’t think many musicians would argue much, at least when you are starting out. I could be wrong

Yeah today is definitely a wtf day. Just one of those fucking days... meant to be good, but horribly shitty, Breanna's bad karma day. (KittyGoesMrow)
why do I always want to remind you that Shmeng is not your livejournal?

You see through me to every facet of my inner child begging to be released. A song of retrocession I am forever singing. (bunnyinwonderland)
I like the word “retrocession”. Like recession and retro-active all at once…

I used to be a vibechild. My days were spent in constant wonder of the pure energy, emotion, and humanity that could be seen and felt in every person. (tallidaho)
Yeah winter is bad on us all, except on Maui

I think I'm obligated to enter something here if I wanted to take a closer look at the Abbadon piece. In the true spirit of United States elections, we have made this voting system counter-intuitive, confusing and exclusive.

actually i was going for something more tribal here.
"stand with the people with whom you agree"
"stand away from the people with whom you disagree"
"speak loudly and often to sway others since voting is a continum"

I fail to see the exclusiveness.... other than people with shitty Karma cant vote under thier own names but can ask others to vote for them, can register as a new name to vote, and can of course send me, or anyone else notes and ask for one article over another. If they arent a member (have never created a username) then no they cant vote. this includes the billions of people that have never logged in to shmeng, and yes that is alot of people. but in truth, little that we do here, especially from this selctions of brain drippings, will have little impact, other than in a butterfly wing sort of way, on say 6.8 billion of those non-members. And i dont plan on emailing them all and asking them to vote, but you can if you want. all they have to do is make a username, read the short selections, and scan down the comments to stand with or against someone and say something for or against what they have read.

And if they are too ignorant, stupid, uninterested, uninvolved, or whatever to vote, so be it. They can read what the rest of us want to read. or skip it.

I don't recall now why it was that I used the word "exclusive"... one of those mysteries of ill-temperament, I s'pose. I do recall that my tone had more to do with how long it took me to figure out how the voting here was working (entirely my own bad, and I recognised it as such from the start... it had nothing to do with any strong opinions about the submission options), and the need to vent my spleen a bit after the recent US general election. I appreciate your explanation, callei, but I really didn't have a problem with the way things were being done here... I was just feeling foul about voting in general.

Anyway, it's good to see you back in the saddle and hope to read a bit more from you.

its only because you ask good questions that you get big pompous answers.

and believe me, you dont want to read the stuff i have been writing lately. its all been "This grant would aid the foundation by funding a new round of testing of ...." and " The advantages and disadvantages, in a socio-economic context, reflect the values of the host culture towards the "disadvantaged" or "underserviced" population that, by the world-view of the host culture, are assumed to be part of the host culture in terms of life goals, social values, and religous beliefs."

Altho i jsut finished something on Alternative Male Contraception, including a Phase III testing of a single shot that promises (and has delivered) infertility in men with no side effects and almost instant, low-no pain reversal.

I stumbled across a very effective non-reversible male contraceptive method using office supplies. Of course, if it had occured to me to apply for a grant, it would have occured to me that the whole thing was a pretty bad idea from the start.

I get paid to read term papers. My going rate to read a term paper is close to about $45 bucks an hour these days. I would never subject myself willingly to a term paper. The fact that Callei has been subjected to such for free is wrong enough in itself, she should also charge at least $45 per hour, but I suspect it should be something closer to the $100 range since she is not coming over and lighting your head on fire for the displeasure.

So, that said, seeing as how I’m not a wealthier woman, and since no one asked for information to wire me money, I would never volunteer to read the term paper.

Doesn’t help that it was written by abbadon, I mean come on…we all know you are smarter, run in better circles, are probably better dressed and have snobbier friends, so why must you continue to subject us to your brilliance when you know we will never get it….

Leave the term papers to you teacher, bud. And let me tell you a secret. The don’t enjoy reading them. They don’t like them, and when they say it was well reasoned and insightful, that’s their way of saying “I’m not getting paid enough for this shit.” We don’t usually tell our students that, but I’ll let you in on it. No one likes reading term papers. It’s a fact, the way of life, and something you really need to learn and take to heart.

You’ve got a brain in there, submit something worth reading for a change. But please, god, Callei, no term papers!

What a sweet gig you've got being entitled to be paid to read things. Most people who are in that biz are paid for their critiques, reflections or corrections, but certainly NOT for the privilege (or chore, I suppose) of simply reading someone else's thoughts, research or hypotheses. I've actually paid other people for the privilege of reading other people's work before... I had obviously not worked out how "precious" my time was; a little snobbery could really have gone a long way towards lining my pockets even if it didn't make me any more pleasant to listen to.

Incidentally, self-aggrandisement and snotty chides at easy targets are something else that nobody likes to read; bet your teachers never told you that!

I'd come out and say that I would actually like to read Abbadon's term paper since it would be nice to read something by him in which he actually delineated a position about something instead of just hinting that everyone else is wrong... but... if I came out and wrote that, I might have to pay you to read it. And heaven knows I wouldn't want to waste your precious time.

I didn't say I get paid to read things. I said I get paid to read term papers. If I was paid to read things I wouldn't be living in South Korea in an apartment paid for by an employer, where I'm basically owned by the system. I'd have a nice harem of naked girls in a castle somewhere. That's what I'd do if I got paid to read things.

I do get paid to read term papers. I'll ready abby's if he is willing to pay me to.

Also, I'd like to read something abbadon has written. Preferably something that he wrote with shmeng, the community, in mind. I think it would be fascinating.

i have read it. its not bad. Its not good, unless you already have a grasp of the theory and issues surrounding the classical myths of monastic architecture. But it was not written for the Shmeng community to read; it was written for a grade in some school.

I always get nervous posting anything to pedigogic because there is such a high chance of plagerism that i might not catch. (for those of you that think you got some past me, you didnt. Someone else posted your attempts to glorify yourself at the expense of my professional reputation, this websites existance, and Dev's wallet. you little shits.) This paper, it must be called a paper because it certainly isnt an article, is predicated on a set base of theoretic knowledge, a reasonably mainstream set, with tendrils to less obviously mainstream knowledge that supports a world-view supposing a direct connection, a lineage even, from one culture to another. It is tatologically sound, if i can use that word to mean " ignoring all other things, it is equal to itself" but it is biased (radically) to a superior "Western-ism", like so many textbooks.

I am loath to post it because it is a) non-rational but posed as rational, b) can only have appeal to a small subset of the readers here, c) i cannot prove that it is his words, and d) i cannot prove the citations.

I would like to post it because a) it isnt poetry or whining, b) it is a chance for Abby to become part of the group, and c) because some people might enjoy ripping the hell out of it for its obvious slant and illogic.

So i am conflicted. What else is new.

It was accepted by one of Britain's most prestigious universities (Nottingham, in case you care) as not plagiarised. That should be enough of a guarantee. The citations can easily enough be looked up. (unless he foolishly gave you no indication of which books they are from in which case they are no good as citations.)
Fair enough though, it may not be enjoyable to everyone, but then again what is?
A bias in an article, news peice, story even, is not a new thing and not a reason to reject it.
It could plausably spark an interest in someone enough that it may become a reason to grasp the theory and issues surrounding the classical myths of monastic culture, and as a layman myself, I enjoyed reading that of it I didn't lose as much to see the slants put on it as the subject itself.

I'm glad that Nottingham accepted the term paper. Unfortunately, they probably did not contact Callei with that information, nor is she likely to be clairvoyant enough to know to contact them for it, either. And I'm sure that she has all the time in the world to look up citations on all the term papers that get submitted, even though it is clearly stated in the guidelines for article submission that term papers will not be published.

Even with this considered, it still got its chance, instead of being thrown away with the rest of the slush pile. What are you complaining about? That the public of Shmeng didn't vote for the candidate that you wanted them to? Sorry, but people are going to vote they way they want, and they wanted Dolo.

Callei is right - to post term papers would involve a lot more work and a lot more risk of plagiarism. So abbadon's was clean - if she just posted that, then others, maybe ones not quite so innocent, would want theirs published, too. Believe it or not, Callei has other things to do with her life than to look into the acceptability of people's term papers.

So it seems that you are upset that A.) Callei did not bend the rules sufficiently for your friend, or B.) Callei doesn't devote her time to researching other people's term papers for their veracity, or C.) the portion of the public that you believe wanted to read the paper lost the vote to have it published.

Why are you upset about that?

Not to be pro- or anti- abbadon, not my point here, but it is already established in the by-laws of article-writing here at Shmeng that term papers won't be posted. It's not a matter of who wrote it. Even if Devin wrote a term paper, he would have to break his own rules to post it here.

Abbadon's term paper got more of a chance to be read than anyone else's on this site, just by being listed among the candidates to be voted for in this article. Callei asked people's opinions, people gave them, and consensus leaned towards Dolo's articles rather than Abbadon's. If anyone is seriously disappointed by this outcome, perhaps they should try contacting Abbadon and ask for a private copy.

Callei asked for opinions - Domkitten gave hers, as asked. She has a right to her opinion, and everyone else had both the right and the opportunity to give theirs. Even those who didn't have to read, assess, or grade papers had the option. I guess that either they didn't want to read it, or they didn't vote. In any case, it's not Domkitten's fault that your friend's paper didn't get posted.
