Why is it that most of America is getting off on watching Simon (American Idol) destroy the hope and dreams of some young person who aspires to be a singer?
I fucking hate reality TV. I remember when only one reality show, The Real World (the older seasons), was worth watching. Now it seems every channel has there own version. (Btw, the creator of all those shows died, not too long ago)
Many of these shows are based upon the idea of betraying everyone in order to win. Examples: Survivor, Big Brother, etc. It’s almost like they believe the only thing worth watching are a bunch of “normal” people act like asses to one another. Like I really want to see that. These people come on the show with this “it’s all about me” mentality that makes me sick. I like to believe in the goodness of others but I can’t see any of that through all the back stabbing and arguments.
The reason I put “normal” in quotations is because these people aren’t regular everyday people. These guys have to be searched for out of many other applicants. Each one of the “chosen” are those that fit certain stereotypes in order to create drama and conflict.
Oh, and have you ever wondered why a reality show needs about six writers. Well, turns out those very same writers write what the “normal” people say in the confessionals. Haven’t you ever wondered why everyone sounds the same, even though they all come from different backgrounds?
Even the real world has changed. It used to be a show about seven strangers picked to live…blah blah blah…You all know the rest. Now it seems to be about whom in the house is gonna hook up with whom.
My guess would be Trishel with…whatever guy just happens to be around at the time.
Then there are the reality shows about the people who have no idea about reality, rich celebrities. Ok, lets talk a little bit about “Rich Girls” and “The simple life”. Both shows follow around rich girls that don’t live on the same planet we all do. Damn, same page different book. These girls are so oblivious of the world around them. They’re spoiled brats that will never amount to anything without “daddies fortune”.
I guess it’s not really their fault they were raised on money. So I can let it go. Hell, I actually like watching The Osbourne’s.
While we’re on the subject of the rich. There’s also the other kind of reality show that’s all about tricking people to participate in some fake contest to see how far that person will go to win it. Ex. “Joe Millionaire”, where they trick the most money hungry women into believing that this guy is rich and looking for someone to share it all with. After meeting “Joe” these girls instantly feel some kind of “connection” with him. Yeah a connection with his wallet, but the jokes on you, cause really, he’s construction worker that gets paid about fifteen bucks an hour…have fun.
Is anyone else’s gag reflex working on overtime? I know mine is.
Now there seems to be a new trend in reality shows, the reality show makeover. Not the kind of makeover that requires only a haircut and some lipstick, but the kind of make over that requires a plastic surgeon. Example: The Swan, Fox’s answer to “Extreme makeover”. I hate this show with a passion. It comes off as taking “ugly” women and doing the greatest thing they could possibly do for them…pay for their plastic surgery. After all the “makeovers” the “swans” will compete against each other in a beauty pageant, that’s if you’re still watching.
Anyone else feel the vomit coming?
Many if not all of the women on the show are attractive already; well when it comes to physical looks anyway. I see these women go through their “transformations” from “ugly duckling” to “swan”. I see a change in the way they look. I also see how much pain; they’re in after the surgery. Maybe they could’ve dieted to lose the weight? Ya know a bit of exercise would help. Then again I guess no amount of exercise will ever get your nose to look the way you want it to.
Why can’t these people see that in the end you’ll be old, fat and your hair will be gray? What’s so wrong with that? It’s normal to grow old, acquire wrinkles and so on.
I’m not against plastic surgery, mind you. I’ve seen women disfigured by their ex husbands, who confused their faces with punching bags and go through plastic surgery to get back what was taken away from them. I think that’s the best (and to me the only) reason to get plastic surgery.
Then I see these girls that want a smaller waist and it just makes me crazy. Marilyn Monroe was a size fourteen. What’s wrong with that? I don’t know about you guys, but I miss women with curves. America’s shallow frame of mind is just disappointing. I’ve seen very attractive young women have such low opinions about their bodies. (It’s not just the women either bulimia and anorexia are on the rise amongst men)
I saw this one makeover show…on MTV, about two girls going through plastic surgery to get a bigger chest and a smaller waist in order to be models. In the physical sense of the word beautiful, they weren’t, not before or after. When it comes to being beautiful in any other way, they weren’t. I think that’s why I wasn’t attracted to them at all.
(Sarcasm coming in 3… 2… 1)
Oh yeah, I love women with more plastic in them than a Barbie Doll. I can’t stand to see a woman that has the nose, chin, and cheekbones they were born with. I love a size two waist with size double d breast sitting on top, cause girls that look like they’re about to topple over just turns me on in all the right ways. Oh and those over inflated lips just make me so hard. Lets not forget about that face of yours that has been stretched so far back that your ears are touching each other. Oh god! I think I’m gonna have an orgasm just thinking about it.

I loathe reality tv myself...to the point where on the off chance that I'm forced to watch it or stumble across one while I'm flipping through channels I feel a distinct urge to chew off my own tongue. I think mostly this is because I don't really like reality that much to begin with...and far be it from me to not hate a cheap mass-produced reality on tv.
I think I like that Simon dude only because I think he hates those people as much as I do...aaargh.
The swan thing made me slightly disturbed. Poor women...CONFORM CONFORM CONFORM.

I loathe Reality T.V! Ahh! I just want to shoot the t.v. whenever I see that crap pop up on my screen. FOX, especially, has the most annoying shows ever. I really don't understand how people can get a kick out of watching shows like...Superstar, where people with horrible singing voices are told they are great! and talented! The poor bastards don't know it's a set up to present them to America as the worst singing voice in the country. OoH Goody!
It's crap like that that gives me a reason for not watching t.v. anymore. The History/ Discovery channel are my best friends now. :)
So, if you ever want to get me in a homicidal rage...just flip on American Idol for me. Maybe after I'm done killing everyone on the block, I'll kill myself.

My one and only vice is COPS. I loved that show as a kid, I love that show now.
I like watching the ones from my area hoping to see someone I know. The last episode I saw they tackled some guy in my old parking spot at my old apartment in Pacific. It RULED.

Other than some common grammar mistakes, I like your ranting style. It reads very much like a spoken dialogue. Good read.
About reality TV stuff... I hate it, too. What really sickens me is the women who are competing for "true love." What the hell? They're 20somethings and they seem to think that they HAVE to get married; and to some person who is practically a stranger, no less! It nauseates me because these women are practically spokespersons for terrible female stereotypes. Makes me want to smack some sense into them... argh!

yeah, most reality tv is about as real as the plastic people we have walking around in the actual real world - but there is one show in which the rules are a little different. my comparative civ teacher was telling us about a pioneer experience show in which they take people who sign up and put them on some land out in the boonies of manitoba and they have to work together to survive. the only thing from today that they get is medical treatment but otherwise they completely have to survive on their own... she said it was interesting and she is a real big critic of reality tv...

Actually, I was informed that Marilyn Monroe was about a size 6 because of vintage sizes. The way we do sizing now is different than the way sizing was done then. So she may have been a 14 then, but she would be a 5/6 today. Same thing with Bettie Paige. The rest of your rant was quite good though.

I find the face stretching things so silly. but i agree with your opinion on the dd breasts and the size 2-3 waist. i mean, whats so bad about being normal??? (not "normal" but NORMAL....perhaps ORIGIONAL is the word i need.....anyway) really? whats so bad about it?? i believe that people are more beautiful they way they are suppossed (sp?) to be. and, yes this is cheesy, it's the inside that countsm not the outside.

Not to be mean, but for someone who doesn't like reality t.v. and who can feel bile coming up just at the thought of it, you sure do know an awful lot about it.
I have to admit though, I'm hooked to reality t.v. There is this window, and outside you can see birds, hummingbirds, squirrels, bats, cats, chipmunks, squirrels and all odd assortments of other things. I just can't stop watching. I'm hoping that the gold finch hooks up with the gross beak, but the indgo bunting keeps strutting around the territory like he's something special, it's fascinating.
Honestly though, wouldn't it be easier to just turn off the t.v. I understand the inherent voyerism in watching reality t.v. It certainly does feed into the nature of people to spy, gossip, and search for drama, but in the end, the only way to stop it is to rise above it, by either detonating the t.v., unplugging the cable, or turning to a fish bowl, which can be much more fascinating in the end.
