Articles: what is going on here? |
Posted by

I am on shmeng daily... if I don't post, I try to read almost everything... but has anyone noticed that the number of visitors has sky rocketed since taht smegging article was posted?
I mean, the government tries to set us up for harrassment of a legal kind and suddenly everyone is interested in us. The same thing happened to many "gothic" sites after the columbine "incident." The number of hits was phenomenal.
Sooo... the question on my mind is this... why? These people can't have come here to assess teh "threat" that the gothic culture poses... can they? *worried look*I mean, at this moment, there is one member and 35 visitors... are people that morbidly curious that they would just stop by and stare at us like a bunch of zoo animals?
Not that I mind if they are... but do they truly understand what it is that they are seeing? Do they honestly understand that they are seeing the white crested weirdo in his natural habitat? Do they understand that they have the privilege of seeing the only Vampcourt known to be in captivity? We are a managerie... and odd one at that... I mean... Where else can you go and see a Devin, Ickgirl, Callei, Rae, Vampcourt, bettie x, feralucce, Dolorosa, Ironboots, Fergschmuck, and many others too numerous to be named all in one place? No where....
How... how do we do it? How do we make people understand who and what we are?

I, for one, do not want people to understand who and what I am. There will likely always be xenophobia, and although it is a scarlet badge of ignorance, it has its uses if you are the source of the phobia.
Muhahahahaaa....

Re: Re: what is going on here? by Shade (Shade@Gothcult.com) on Apr 18, 2002 - 12:16 PM (User info | Send a Message) http://www.hotelshade.com | I don't know that I want people to understand me, but I would welcome a bit of education on their part. (as always, it's the illustrious they) I wouldn't mind being a little less feared. Granted it's fun to walk into the mall and have all but the two punks in the corner turn to stare, but I'd almost rather know it was because they were thinking "damn, I want him" as opposed to the usual "ah hell Martha, go lock up the cows."
I will say I'm firmly of the opinion that we are being targeted as a sub-culture prcisely because of our non-violent nature. Just recently we discussed the concept of whether or not we would be violent and under what circumstances. lmost every one of us stated that we were not volent by nature, but in the face of violence to loved ones we could be pushed to the edge and farther. That makes us perfect. Unlike punks, or gag-bangers, the majority of us do not wander about armed, and those of us who do, do so with a rather hefty sense of honor about the weapons we carry. A punk on the other hand carries weapons and while they share the sense of honor, they also (Stereotypically I admit) carry a grudge against most of society. And Gang bangers are forever making the news for the random lead they let fly in small neighboorhoods. We are safer than most groups in terms of targetting, the autorities do not expect us to fight back, they don't expect us to attack on sight, and they do know that if they throw a punch at our girl/boy/close friends, we will react in a manner most appropriate for arrest. Our image is easily recognizeable in most cases, and we are often in groups small enough to be harrassed without danger to the harrassing officer; again, unlike the afore mentioned groups. The overlying reason behind the targeting is easy. We are a sub/counter-culture. We accept those around us without judging them before we get to know them (this is different from letting someone into our hearts and giving them free reign to stomp, we do judge, jsut not on first sight). This makes us a threat to the white-bread image of the upstanding jock and cheerleader teen that society is the most comfortable. Our way of life is supposedly as promiscuous as the gay community is (also supposedly), we have a certain festive air about us, and we view body augmentation as a means to beauty. We see the beauty in those around us regardless of age, sex, weight, etc...these things all lead to a efar reflex in the mind of the civic leader who is ostensibly in charge of making the public rearing of our youth something uniform and predictable.
Hmm, I could go on with this thread for ages, but I think I'll leave it here for the moment. Just remember, think hapy thoughts and keep your heads down. Before we know it we'll all be given "free of charge" rent free condo housing in the great padded apartment housing in the sky. |

Autority harrassment by Arthegarn on Apr 18, 2002 - 02:03 PM (User info | Send a Message) | It shocks me to read this. Granted I live in a country in which firearms are extremely rare and controlled, in which gangs are an unknown phenomenon and in which policemen treat you with respect (well, at least they always treated me with respect and I do not wear a "Beware of the Lawyer" T-Shirt), but goths are left alone by the police.
I have recently studied (for a case I'll post about when it's over and I can freely talk about it, I'm sure you'll all find it interesting) an extra-official copy of a CUP report (that's an information-sharing organization that joins all Spanish police forces: the National Police, the Civil Guard, the Basque and Catalonian polices and representatives of the City PDs) about urban tribes. The report points out that Goths (sinisters) are "utterly harmless despite their appearance", calm, non-violent, that they will "cooperate with the police force if treated with respect" and that they "show respect to the Law and other's rights". It says that drug trafficking is unlikely in a Goth (it also says usage is only slightly lower than average, mostly haschis, cocaine and "pills"). It warns the Police that Goths have relationship to other, more dangerous and violent groups such as punks and satanists (they call the luciferites satanists, tsk tsk) and that it's not uncommon to find a mixed group in which case the police should try to address the Goth. Well, it says many things, and all of them are good (or at least not bad). One of them is that they tend to be more aware of their individual rights than common youngsters...
Down here nobody harrases us but preps and old lady of the "This didn't happen with Franco" style (which we treat with much more politeness and courtesy than their own grandsons, anyway). It's also true most other tribes fear us because of the black legend (we are all warlocks and witches, boooo) and it's very easy to be peaceful when left alone.

I for some reason have this magic over police....hell I almost rearended a state trooper doing 80 in a carpool lane and I didn't get a ticket.
BUT I have had friends get an unfair amount of slack, and even worse from authorities.
I don't understand it...maybe it's jut my "winning" personality *snort* |

Re: Re: Re: what is going on here? by Schizo on Apr 22, 2002 - 05:26 AM (User info | Send a Message) | So the idea is, we look dangerous but we don't generally act dangerous. This makes it easy to pick on us because, not only are we unarmed, but those observing aren't likely to go beyond appearances, thus transmogrifying our attackers into heros.
"Yes, brave and noble Mr. Cop," say Mr. and Mrs. Jones. "Protect us from the scary-wary goths and keep our streets safe!" |

Well, who knows. At least we are a very nice bunch aren't we? I have even changed my mind about all USA nationals being a bunch of under-educated, rude barbarians after meeting all of you, soif you are good ambassadors for your country sure you are good ambassadors for the sub-culture. So let them think all goths are as clever and sensible as you are...

This almost sounds like I'm being sarcastic, but I'm not.
I think the reason why you see so many visitors listed is because since the recent upgrade, the site prompts you to log in more frequently. my guess is that members are forgetting their passwords (change it to something you can remember!), or are too lazy to log in.
therefore, my guess is that many of the "visitors" are really members. why? take a notice on how few members are shown logged in at any given time.
just an idea

We are also getting a LOT more traffic than we ever have. If you're curious - here's some Stats on the site. (The monthly graph towards the bottom is the interesting one there).
I'll fix the login thing soon, I've just got other stuff I'm working on right now. |

Re: Re: what is going on here? by goathead (toxic@hotbrev.com) on Apr 21, 2002 - 08:44 AM (User info | Send a Message) http://http:// | Well even if it is true to a certain extent the number of non-member visitors has increased drastically. There are currently 176 guests on the page, but the number of members online never reaches such high figures. |

I found a neat song that's relevant to the whole misunderstood goth problem. It's pretty illustrative of the general American view of goth-ness. It's a remix of a pre-existing Cruxshadows song with samples added in. It's called Leave Me Alone (Shaft 2020). You can find it on mp3.com on the Dancing Ferret Discs page. :)

When I logged on Monday, there were over 50 visitors here and only 2 members. I was astounded. I've never seen that many people here at one time. I also wondered what was going on to have that many people here.
In my humble opinion, I don't think people will understand. There is too much negative attention directed toward 'gothic culture' already. Too much bias already exists. Whatever people hear or read to contradict their opinions, they will always want to believe the outrageous and immoral over the truth.

Hey...If I'm the only Dolorosa in captivity...can I bite stuff and scratch myself?
Maybe it is morbid curiosity, maybe it's just the pretty pictures and funny little white twisty things that fill up the screen like magical little faeries...whatever...I for one, don't care. Let them watch, whoever they are...and I will exult in any attention I can get. LOOK AT ME LOOK AT ME!! Heh...
But seriously folks...

Re: Re: what is going on here? by Devin (devin-at-vibechild-dot-com) on Apr 22, 2002 - 11:22 AM (User info | Send a Message) http://devin.vibechild.com/ | Just to clear this up and end all the speculation. I have a link checker that runs on sundays and checks all of the links on this site. Since it's not a real browser, the counter doesn't know if it's been here before and counts it as a new guest every time it scans a page. It hits the site every few seconds, and each counted guest times out after 10 minutes. This seems to work out to about 200 guests at any time while the counter is running.
This only accounts for sunday morning and afternoons though. There's definately a lot more traffic than there has been. It's showing up in the logs and in the stats page I mentioned elsewhere in these comments. |

right now the numbers are much more sencible.. 15 guests and 8 members (i dont know WHO they are since i am kind of new here but still its a start to normality
if you ask me its because you have shmeng listed in a search engine :D!! alot of fucked up wanna bees go into search engines and type in goth or something and BAM shmeng scomes up after i read this i tried it and it was like 2 pages in..
that might be the problem i dunno
or perhaps word of mout has become overwhelming? (i doubt it but still..) but think about it.. is it better to have guests who are fake and go away or members who are fake and wont?
