Fireworks. No - idiots who blow stuff up while you are trying to sleep. No. Wait. The sickly haze that clouds an otherwise gorgeous night and the morning when you wake up with a stuffy nose and sore throat.
Go Americans.

I didn't sleep much either - My house kept shaking.
So is patriotism an excuse to blow things up? Or do people just blow things up because it's allowed (like new years)?

Try having 4 kids, who you have to make a meaningful holiday for. We started out getting them ice cream cones at the icecream parlor (baskin robbins) I was concerned with them making a mess... they all behaved beautifully, not spilling a drop ( even the three year olds) and I ended up dumping my shake on myself... ack... so, then we go to the lake to give bread to the geese, we have a wonderful time, until it starts raining. with lightning, really close... we all ran to where the car wa parked, about 2 miles away... then we cooked hot dogs on the grill. and made s'mores. then we gave them the small backyard fireworks experience... snappers, snakes, sparklers, a few booga-loogas, and a california candle. the boys (3 year olds) were terrified by the booga loogas, and we talked them into holding the sparklers... then we sat on the porch and watched the neighbors who had better fireworks displays than we'd had... the whole day was exhausting... I did make them watch specials on PBS so they'd know what all the fuss was about, and told the older ones about independence, and all that... will probably get more in-depth as they get older... anyway, that was our holiday...

Look on the bright side. Those who are setting off fireworks usually aren't also firing guns into the air, as they do where I live. Every year a few people are critically injured by stray bullets.
Go Americans.

But that is the mere essence of the day, screw patriotism, its the only day that its technically legal to blow stuff up and set random things on fire for no particular reason other than it somehow sybolizes the birth of a country...It may be slightly childish but also fairly addictive...
...sieze the day...
