Articles: Spam: It's not just for weridos anymore |

There is nothing more wholly Shmengy on the face of the planet than SPAM. Spam is the vile evil of the internet age that cannot be dealt with in normal and healthy way. Why is it that even on a website like Shmeng you can find the words “Spam proof”? It’s because spam is out there, it’s everywhere, and it’s particularly unstoppable.
I use an email service like most people. Over the last week, I received over 400 spam emails, about half of those managed to get filtered out. Some of the gems that landed in my in-box included:
Lose 32 pounds by February
Increase your penis 3 inches in 24 days
these fucking toons are crazy bitches
we want to fuck your friends mom...
Fountain of Youth
Join and Get 5 DVDs for 49 cents each plus shipping and processing
Loads of cum for her
My younger sister home for the holidays9715
My Panty Collection
Britney S & Anna K lez.mpg
Naked nude grannies
Watch us take farm animal cocks
Prescription Drugs discrete and to your door
Now, I’m a self-respecting porn-loving person like many of you out there, but I mean really, do I need to get all this shit in my inbox on a daily basis. I know where to find good porn when I want it and I never actually click through any of these emails, so why is there so much of it.
I cannot conceive of why I manage to get so much of this crap, other than the fact that the world if full of stupid, uneducated Shmengy people who actually read these emails and then click on the accompanying links.
Lots of people want to lose weight, own dvds, or get medication, but how many of those desperate fat, movie watching, prescription drug addicts are waiting with bated breath for some spam to come their way leading them to the latest miracle or innovation in their field.
The biggest problem with spam is that it throws odd quirks into the face of millions, sexual habits and personal identity issues that used to be privately sweated over. No longer does the panty sniffing perv have to fear being caught, or fear reproach for his panty sniffing desire, because fortunately somewhere out there is a spammer telling millions about panty sniffing and where to find it. The dog fucking, scat smelling user who used to hide his love for poop from his girlfriend can now feel confident and secure knowing that there are many dog/poop lovers out there, and that thanks to spam, even more know that people like that, so it’s okay.
There is something about our individual perversions and desires that used to make them fun. The foot fetishist, bondage loving, ass fuckers out there could take some pride in knowing that their foot-tying sodomizing was a private joy, known only to them and that the rest of the vanilla universe would never really understand their joys. Now millions of people can open their email, read a subject line and condemn them for their ass loving, foot fucked up desires. And really, is that fair?
When I was a kid, I enjoyed getting junk mail. I was young, nobody loved me (oh-boo hoo I was seven years old) and well, getting mail with my name on it made me feel special. It was fun to think that some big catalog company actually thought I wanted to by sheets, or to get some newsletter junk that was funny to read, or had shiny glossy pictures. Junk mail made me feel the teensiest bit special, and it was sort of fun to get because of that. I especially liked imagining that I had just won the Clearing House Sweepstakes and that soon Ed McMahn would be swinging by to give me my giant check so I could leave my family and live happily ever after.
Getting loads and loads and loads of spam, most of it sexual in nature, in no way makes me feel special or important. It makes me feel crummy. It makes me want to take a gun and blow away the computer link clicking pervs that are into watching grannies with cows, pervs who normally would not bother me. This is why I say down with SPAM.
So now the questions:
How can we stop it?
Who can we kill?
Where can I find more information on foot loving, ass fucking, bondage fiends without getting a daily email about it?
I apologize to all the god fearing perverts out there but this really had to be said.

it has nothing to do with which sites you go to... I know someone who doesn't even surf the web and she gets the same amount of crap in her inbox as the rest of us... it is something that many companies charge a fee for... and then you can e-mail EVERYONE on the service...it's a shitty way to make money, but they do it

It has always been like this. Even before there was windows 95, I was getting junk mail. They will always find you, there's no way around that. What you can do is take responsibility for your own inbox.
I get about 400 spam messages a day, and only one or 2 make it into my inbox. Some of the tricks require some learning and some you need to have your own server, but some of them you can use even if you're illiterate.
There's all kinds of ways spammers get your address - they search the web for them the same way a search engine does (this is the reason for the "Spam Proof" public email option on shmeng). They buy them from other companies, or they set up their own newsletters and share the addresses.
Sneakemail is a great way to keep companies from selling your address. http://www.sneakemail.com - The idea is that you give a different address to each company or website that you need to give an address to. When you recieve a message from them, it gets forwarded to your inbox with a tag saying how it got there. If you start getting spam through that address, you just go turn it off and make a new one.
Don't post your real address on public web pages. If you have your own site, don't put your email address, put a link to a script that redirects to a mailto url. This will do the same thing when clicked on, but when spam spiders are searching the site, they won't find it.
On public sites, if you want to post your email, alter it in some way so that a human would have to be reading it to know what to do. (webmaster@REMOVETHIS.shmeng.com)
Procmail - you don't need your own server to use procmail. Anyone with an ISP that gives you shell access to a Unix machine can use it. There are tons of tutorials around the net on how to set it up to catch spam. There's also scripts already written that will catch a lot of it and make sure you don't have to see it. It's also good for filtering the mailing list mail that you want into seperate folders - and it plays really nice with sneakemail.
If you're running your own server, you can get rid of almost all of the spam that you still get sent even after the precautions above. It's not very hard at all if you know a bit about computers, and there's a lot of packages that make it easier.
Postfix - Postfix is a sendmail replacemnt. It's the mail transfer agent that actually delivers the mail. It has tons of stuff in it to reject mail from whoever you want. You can filter by anything you want, and there's plenty of filter files available on the net for free. It can be set to not allow machines to ask it for all of the addresses it knows. It can be set to not let bogus machines connect to it. It also works very nicely with realtime blackhole lists.
Realtime Blackhole Lists - these are lists of known spammers and known computers that will probably be used to send spam soon. By hooking your mail transfer agent up to one or more of these, a lot of the spammers won't even be able to TRY to send you spam.
SpamAssassin - This a fairly new thing that I just started using recently. It is possible to run this wihtout your own server, but it works better with. It was so effective getting rid of my spam, I started forwarding my hotmail though it. My 1 or 2 spams that make it though every day are the ones forwarded though hotmail. After using SpamAssassin, I don't think I would ever be able to go back to using anything else. I have never had it catch a legitimate message as spam (postfix has), and considering I get about 400 spams a day, the 1 or 2 that make it though aren't that big a deal. I could probably set it to be a little more sensative and catch them, but I don't want to chance it catching real mail.
fetchmail - this doesn't stop spam, but it's a good way to move to a clean email box and still get your mail at your old address. The best way is to have it forwarded, but if you can't do t

You always going to have little dead fly bodies on the web...they're sorta' like derelicts and outsiders ya' know, if you're not careful you start completely ignoring them...course such things are not, of course, people, and they can be safely ignored...in which case...well, yay! I suppose...however, never ever deeply confuse said similiairites between outwalkers and spam, for two are of a kin but not the same...personally, if I ever catch a spam-hive, I'm going to apply some Ripley-style bug-burnin'

I wrote about this before, a while back in a thread called "Spam" I believe.
I share your anger.
Nothing worse than opening up your inbox to see "hot fucking slutz ready 4 U" and so forth.
1. You can't stop it. Filters fail. Keep deleted the spam you get, if you open it, you'll only activate the program in the e-mail *some of these spam mails have a hidden program in them* and that program will let the spam server know that you have opened that e-mail...and you'll get more spam mail. Don't click on unsubscribe or see above. Just delete it or get a new account and DO NOT SIGN UP FOR ANYTHING!
2. Everyone.

I just have two addresses. One for friends, and one for spam. If I ever sign up for anything, I use the spam address. Only people I know get to have my real address.
I've found that yahoo is a good spam address. I get a lot of spam, but only about 1 in ten makes it into the inbox. The rest goes into their spam folder, in case you want to see that crap.
After a year and a half, I've had no problems with my real address. I don't think I've every gotten spam there. (I use juno webmail)

I remeber some months ago there was a campaign against spam I actually found quite interesting. As we know, the biggest problem with spam is that is profitable. You got guys out there making really big bucks from selling a-mail lists to spam companies, in this deary time data is money and we better get used to the idea.
What the guys in this campaign did, and I think it was a good idea, was try to fuck with the people who collects these lists. What they basicly did was create a page that created 100 fake e-mail adresses each time it was refreshed, and that had a link to itself. The way a spider works it's simple: it moves from what page to other, each time it finds a link, it follows it, each time it founds a mail adress it stores it in a data base. The idea was to get people to place the link to that URL in every web site posible, that way when a spider program find the URL it would go into a loop and keep recording hundreds and hundreds of fake e-mail adresses and so corrupting the data base making it useless.
I haven't checked in the project site in qite a while, so I don't know how it's working, but it sure sounded like an interesting idea.

I can so identify with you, I've just gotten hit with a new and unique problem, someone out there hates me and because of it I'm getting hit with reverse spam. I just started getting someone's bounced spams...as far as I can tell they hijacked a server in guatamala and are using it to send spam, but they set my email address as the reply to so if they send to a bad address instead of going back to their address, it's going to my box. Talk about weird.
