Articles: I'm Afraid of Americans |

Ok I just got back from France. "Everyone" says that the French are rude, and especially the Parisienes. The only rude people that I ran into over there were Americans. Hell the Germans were more friendly, War verterans were kind in comparison (and generally crippled 80 year olds are a bit cantanlerous!)
I don't know about anyone else, but I'm always a bit embarassed to admit that Im American when I am over seas. As soon as they figure out that you are American, they draw back. They are so used to Americans being mindless jerks, and so often that stereotype is proved true!
I hate it when people tell me "Gee you are nice, I would never have thought you to be american". Its like when people say "wow you are so smart. Its hard to believe that you are pretty too".Im not sure if Im more upset about the stereotype or that Americans act like drunk, amoral pigs when they visit other counries.
I guess both freak me out. I mean who wants to have to fight that hard to everyday? Should i try to be uglier so that people arent so shocked that I have a brain? should I get dumber so that people aren't so shocked that I am pretty?
Should I start lying and saying that I am Brittish so that people arent shocked when I dont act like a mindless brain eating zombie? Should i start insulting my waiter and pretending that I can only speak English so that people arent shocked when I say that I am American?
Also why do they sell the same brand of lingerie in France, but they sell the cute parts of the line instead of the lame parts like they do here? I ran out of money before I ran out of lingerie that I wanted!

I completely understand. I felt the same way in Madrid. I was over there in 1985 when Spain was voting on whether or not to join NATO. Our tour guide-- a veteran traveller-- told us to pretend we were from whatever country we looked like we might be from, since anti-American sentiment was so high. (I spent a lot of time being Canadian.)
Since I don't drink at all, I was one of the only tour-group people who wasn't constantly smashed. Even if I did drink, I can't imagine going all the way to a foreign country only to obliterate the experience by being drunk all the time. You can do that here.
Thank you for your thoughts on my questions. I'll reply to those in a separate posting. Welcome back!
