Theories: Why Hoax Rose Red? |
Posted by
Devin on Thursday, February 21, 2002 - 04:06 AM PST
After accidentally discovering that the "Rose Red" mini-series is NOT actually based on a true story, and after seeing how the pieces were put together to make it all look real, I started wondering why people need to do this. Are our real stories so bland and boring, or so risky for publishers that it's better to make up the true story that a fictional story is based on?
Even though it was extremely easy to figure out that the Diaries were fake, I still know more than one person who is reading them and thinking they're real. One of these people asked me if I'd ever seen the house, since I live pretty close. I said that I hadn't, and went looking for directions. That's all I was looking for. Just directions. Here's what I found.
The search:
I Searched the web for "Rose Red". I got results about the mini-series, Ellen Rimbauer (the author of the Diary the mini-series is based on), Dr. Joyce Reardon (The paranormal researcher that published Ellen's Diary), and Thornwood Castle. Thornwood Castle is supposed to be the real name of the house called Rose Red. But I didn't see Ellen Rimbauer's name anywhere on the Thornwood Castle site. So I wondered who she was, and figured who would know better than the lady that wrote the book about her. So I searched for Joyce Reardon, and found that she's a professor at Beaumont University. So I search for Beaumont University, and find it's website all under construction, and pretty much only having info relating to Joyce Reardon. Then, being the nerd that I am, I wonder why a university website would have a .net extension. All real universities in the US have domain names that end in .edu. So I open up my trusty nerd sleuth tools (UNIX command line) and type the magic words:
$ whois beaumontuniversity.net
Registrant:
Walt Disney Hyperion Books (BEAUMONTUNIVERSITY-DOM)
500 S. Buena Vista Street
Burbank, CA 91521
US
Domain Name: BEAUMONTUNIVERSITY.NET

It seems the good Doctor's employer is Disney. That was enuf for me, but I still snooped around a bit to make sure, since I was going to write an article about it, I didn't want to be wrong. All of this information is so easy to find, I'm not even going to waste time posting links here since that's not the point of the article. Basically Dr. Joyce Reardon Phd. doesn't exist. I know you're not supposed to call yourself a doctor if you're not one, but it seems it's ok to call yourself a doctor if you don't exist.
Histories
From a book review site - The reviewer probably didn't realize the book was a hoax.
Rose Red is a haunted house with a disturbing past. The Seattle mansion was constructed at the turn of the 20th century. Oil magnate John Rimbauer built the house for his bride, Ellen.
From the Thornwood Castle site's History page.
Thornewood Castle, a magnificent three-story manor home dating from the turn of the century, offers over 27,000 square feet of living space, graciously arranged under one tile roof. Boasting 54 rooms, including 28 bedrooms and 22 baths, this English Tudor/Gothic mansion is one of the few genuine private castles in the United States. Thornewood Castle was built to the specifications of Mr. Chester Thorne, one of the founders of the Port of Tacoma, in beautiful Washington State.
With all of the interesting ghost stories in America, you'd think there would be plenty of inspiration for fiction. Why do we need to water down our culture even more by fabricating generic "True Stories" to inspire fiction that is "Based on a True Story"?

Cuz it sells, cuz it worked for Blair Witch, and cuz real ghost stories are really scary but fabricated ones are safe. People don't want reality, they want to live in the United States of Disneyland.

There was a write-up about the miniseries in the newspaper the week of the miniseries, saying that Stephen King wrote the diaries under the psuedonym Joyce Reardon. That the story Rose Red is fiction, but was filmed in a real mansion that is actually a bed and breakfast, and now has a rose red suite... I had no idea you actually thought it was true... that was part of the gimmick of it from the start, that people could believe it was true if they wanted to.

I think your talking about the Winchester house...I actually got to see that one, they have a door that opens up into a three story dead drop, it's great. As for Rose Red, I must be out of the loop something fierce...I haven't even heard of it. Then again, not owning a TV and living on the other side of the world can do that. But now I'm interested...
The answer to all our questions is...Disney...Disney owns everything, even military contracts...no shit. Disney is the Matrix.

Pure profit, sales and ratings... that's why "they" hoaxed Rose Red. I read the book and was intrigued enough to look for more photos of the house on-line, but found nothing except "Beaumont University's" website. I also wondered about the .net extension, and when I couldn't find Beaumont on any list of accredited universities, I realized that the whole thing was a sham. I had wanted to see Rose Red for myself in person, but it doesn't even exist. Are there any real haunted houses out there? I've never seen one.

I figured it was a fake

I figured it was a fake. Stephen King had a pen name with his Thinner novel and others. It was Richard Bachman. He even had a different photo to Stephen King at first. I did hear of a house like Rose Red that was built by the guy that made the westminster rifle on tv. The house was built very weirdly. I bet the Kingdom hospital miniseries is a fake too. Is Stephen King so desperate for ideas that he has to fake true stories and pen names. I don't mind Richard Bachman because he wanted to write a different style. He latter admitted that he was Bachman. Anne Rice does that too. When you write a certain grene of books it is hard to make sales by writing a different grene or style so writers get pen names. He is a great writer. He doesn't need to be inventing so called true stories to make money. It wasn't necessary to make it look like a true story. He could have just said that this was fiction. By doing this, even though it was a great min-series it is no longer fiction. It is a lie. The different between fiction and a lie is fiction is that you know it is not true but it is real to the readers. A lie, for writers, is when a story has no meaning to it. If you watched the stephen king movie the dark half or read the book you would understand what I mean. There is a scene where the writer in the story explains the difference between fiction and a lie.

I know I am 5 years late, but better late than never, right? I truly do appreciate your input, Devin. I used to be one of the many people searching for the truth about Rose Red, and though I found many houses similar to her, I never did find the "true" Rose Red mansion built by the "Rimbauers." I knew Reardon was fake, but I guess my head just refused to believe a lie about a mansion as incredible as one of Rose Red. It pains me to know that the media wove such an amazing lie around the house that it led many hundreds (even thousands) of people on a wild goose chase for her. At least I know I wasn't alone in trying to debunk her. Sad to see Rose Red was all a lie.
