Lemmings on Parade: No End in Sight - War on terrorism |

No End in Sight
On Tuesday, January 29, 2002, President George W. Bush, in his first State of the Union address called the countries of North Korea, Iraq, and Iran an "axis of evil" and the "world's most dangerous regimes."
Through thunderous applause from congress, Bush continuing listing countries. Bosnia, the Philippines, Somalia, all are "ticking time bombs" ready and waiting to go off.
Leaders of these countries have responded predictably. Filipino representative Saturnino Ocampo said that the speech "portrays the arrogant stance of the U.S. to justify its unilateral action." Iran's foreign minister Kamal Kharrazi dismissed Bush's comments as "unfounded" and Salim al-Qubaisi, head of the Iraqi parliament's foreign and Arab relations committee is quoted as saying that "Little Bush's accusation against Iraq is baseless."
No one is denying that these countries have governments that are brutal and totalitarian at best. But do the attacks of September 11, really justify such aggressive behavior on the part of America? Is peace even an option anymore? Hasn't America's past shown that, in the past fifty years, attacking its semi-threatening countries only succeeds in producing more enemies?
In the past, our country has used the Soviet Threat to pretty much justify anything, from seeking out "commies" in our own military to the invasion of Cuba. The fall of the USSR was supposed to ring in a time of peace and understanding from others. There was no longer a threat, and now America had a great opportunity to seek out world peace. Unfortunately, our media and our government has the uncanny ability to take any two-bit dictator and blow them up as the next big threat - even though our government has been employing said dictators for years. Hence Manuel Noriega, former leader of Panama, graduate of the infamous School of the Americas, and drug trafficker supreme and who is now serving 40 years in a U.S. federal penitentiary. He had been in the pay of the CIA for thirty years. Saddam Hussein, who was trampled by Operation Desert Storm, so we could protect another totalitarian government in Kuwait, and who is now the new public enemy #1 was supported by the U.S. when fighting Iran in the eighties. Strangely enough, there is absolutely NO evidence even connecting Iraq to the September 11 attacks. Speaking of bin Laden, he was also financially supported by the U.S. in the eighties in order to keep the Soviets from getting into the Middle East. And now he's mysteriously disappeared.
The philosophy of "my enemy's enemy is my friend" has seemingly dominated America's foreign policy for quite some time, often with disastrous results. There is even a term for getting disastrous results from this philosophy: its called "blowback." Which raises the question "Was it really a good idea to support the Northern Alliance?"
The problem with fighting a "War on Terror" is that it has no end. It's like fighting a war on happiness or something… The War on Terrorism is doing nothing but create more terror. The War on Terror will never end.

Bush thinks its his duty as Superman to get rid of all the bad guys...
Really, would it have been so bad if Gore or Nader or some lone person had been elected? What if by some strange cosmic error, Ickgirl was elected president? The possibilities...

I think it would be most pleasant to see a woman president. But i dont see that happening for awhile. No offence but its still a male dominated world in some aspects. :(

Okay , George is a dickweed, and I listened to his speech, and I was left feeling intellectually RAPED.
Is it just me or do his eyes betray a freaking supernova between his ears?
Our economy is suffering, our troops are at "war", blah blah BUT THE STATE OF THE NATION HAS NEVER BEEN BETTER!
Well, yeah, nearly EVERYBODY bonds together during a good old cross burning...
Then I heard the "evil axis" and I wanted to put my head in the sand....oooooh boy...heeeere we go.
Did anyone else hear a bomb detonating as he said those words? A big invisible bomb? Like "there goes the neighborhood"? I remember when he broke treatise and started the okay for making nuclear bombs in america.....then was like "North vietnam, Iraq, blah blah are manufacturing nuclear weapons of mass destruction, manufacturing biological warfare agents, etc" and john stewart on the daily show repeated this, then gave a ridiculous look to the camera and said "nuclear bombs? Anthrax? Who do they think they are? US?!"
I about pissed myself, but it's funny in a sad sort of way.
I thought the minute I heard about the initial terrorist attack that it was going to turn ugly some way down the road. Everyone over there has an axe to grind with someone, including us. I felt it was going swimmingly, if not slow and a bit more messy than it should have been, until the state of the union address. Then I heard the bomb drop.....
What a friggin idiot. Yeah, drop bombs on them, then piss off everyone else while you're at it. Gooooood going, dipshit.
And don't tell me that if clinton was in office when this happened that we'd still be talking about "the war on terrorism"...it'd have been over LONG ago...he'd have gone in, kicked the shit out of whoever was responsible, and gotten out before you ccould say osama's mamma. Clinton didn't fuck around.
Betcha when that first plane hit he was on the phone to gore saying "now, are you sure you didn't really win that election? Sure they didnt' miss a box somewhere? Are you sure? Please?"
I shudder to think of what would have happend if gore was in office when this happened.

Haha "Axis of evil". Well, these are all emotional speeches meant to manipulate the public I guess. Nixon made a lot of similar statements during the Vietnam war. They probably don't want a bunch of hippies protesting against the "War on Terror" again. They want you to pay your taxes (money for manufacturing more nuclear weapons), be nice and quiet and not worry too much about your privacy (so they can read your e-mail). They want you to use a credit card, cell phone/whatever so you can be tracked 24/7.
Recently an anarchist site (raisethefist.com) was taken down by the FBI because "it provided information on manufacturing bombs" or so. It's archived at www.archive.org, although I haven't seen any stuff like that.
Also, on kuro5hin.org there was a thread on terrorism (?) and one person said something about "infecting the VP with smallpox". The next day, some SS (secret service) agents had a little chat with him.
So, basically what I'm saying is: be really nice and quiet, go to work, pay your taxes and be a part of the system or wake up one day with SS agents pointing guns at your head.
Duh! Man I tell you, I'd be the first person to colonize Mars rather than.. oh nevermind :)

ok , every war is usually bad. but the terrorism is bad too. so what we have to do? i know that this war is probably endless , but endless are our tryings to live in better world too. we have to fight against terrorism in every way we can. i am not american so i am quit wondering that you disagree with your president. god, it was your buldings that these mutherfuckers blown in the air. i think bush is very good president , much more better than stupid clinton. i think we have to be glad that clinton is not president in this time , cause he is less stronger person than bush. yes i am worry that this could turn in some middle age crusade against every religion except christianity. but i think we have to believe in our people,in our presidents ,in our goverment, cause i think these are the only one with enough power to solve this problem. And terrorism IS problem. i know it is difficult to believe in people we do not know exactly, but now we have to forget some minnors problem and cooperate with each other to find and destroy these poeple who are responsible for terrorism. you probably will not agree with me , but this is my opinion. God bless america and the world.

I really wanted to stay out of the political arena on Shmeng from here on out. But once again, I find myself yielding to the temptation. Although everything I state will most likely either go through one ear and straight out the other or ignite heated rebuttals, I am going to say my piece.
Not one of us are fully aware of the exact details of the situation. Nor do we know all of the evidence that has been gathered, and none of us have sat at the table with the joint chief of staff and National Security Advisors to know exactly what perils we are facing. But yet, we can sit and bitch, moan, groan, complain about the decisions made.
We think we know it all, but we don’t. If we did, we wouldn’t need a government to make the decisions for us. Like it or not, that’s the way it is. Want to change it? Run for President since you have all the answers. I am tired of hearing the whining about past events...that’s exactly what they are..past events..look at it, learn from the mistakes and move on. Deal with what’s on the dinner plate right now, not yesterdays left overs. If we dwell on the who’s right and wrong through out American History, we begin to lose focus on the present situation. Please, don’t misunderstand me, history is important. But to continuously bring it up to cut throat what is going on right now, is ridiculous. We are talking survival here, not some school yard game of “are too!” and “are not!”. The George Bush and Clinton Bashing is not even necessary. Sounds to me like everyone is masquerading behind their personal grudges about who is in office instead of the crisis at hand. Plain and simple people..there is a threat of biological, nuclear destruction to us here in the U.S. and abroad. The Countries that were called out where done so due to the fact that they produce and manufacture these materials to the highest bidder and they are known to condone terroristic activity and give them refuge. There was evidence found in the caves with theses materials on their “shopping” lists. Do I trust my government? I would have to be insane to answer yes to that, but at this point, I don’t have a choice. So why bitch? Forget the daisies and the peace symbol. It didn’t work in the 70's and it won’t succeed in this millennium. This behavior will continue as long as humans are inhabitants on this earth. It always has and always will be the law of the jungle, survival of the fittest. Utopia only exists in a book.

Feral you were active duty huh? Then your probably familiar with the sentiment I'm about to loose...let 'em all frickin' burn, I'll bring the matches...good guys, bad guys...what the fuck ever. All the penny-anny bullshit is just wasting air and evolution time...blast Osama, Blast Bush, blast madagascar lemurs for being suspiciously bandit-eyed. I'm sick and tired about having to think about it...it just doesn't get anybody anywhere.
Ta' hell with everything...maybe thats why I don't shoot guns, I pull bullets out of people. Whatever.
Valid and intelligent conversations and discussions abound on this site...but for god's sake...this one needs to be shot in the head and left in a shallow grave.
Hoo-ah...

I have tried very hard to avoid this whole debate. In several of my college classes, I have gotten a lot of shit for airing my views, but I do want to put in my two cents.
Yeah, a lot of people died, and that sucks, I know that, however, things like that happen ALL THE TIME!!! Not so close to home, but in other countries bloody war is common! I just don't think its fair that a lot of us freak out when it happens here, but we hardly say a word if it happens somewhere else in the world, when it is just a blip on the news or in the paper.
we (USA) will not stop until our national thirst for blood is quenched, and i don't think that is fair. I really don't see how anything is being solved right now, I mean, Bin Laden is still around, we are still getting periodic national alerts (the last one being on the 12th of February) and people are dying. I know a lot of people that don't understand that becuase it is so far away, but people who live and breathe and think, and feel, and in many ways are JUST LIKE US, they are dead, and we killed them, people who didn't deserve it, children, babies, and it makes me so sad. On top of that, since the whole Sept 11th thing, we have given Afganistan more money than we EVER gave them before then, I almost want to say it was like before=2 mil, after=43 mil, or something like that, so how is it that we are accomplishing anything. I know we can't sit back, but we don't seem to be doing much taking action either.
