Articles: Goths and poseurs...I've had it!! |

I demand this be handed out to every 13 year old when they buy their first black tshirt...
I've had it! I've seen so many posts all about the internet about "what is goth" "am I goth" "I'm gother than you" "you aren't goth" and "what is the nature of my uber black undies" 'course I'm the moron still reading them, but it's like telling roger rabbit not to push the big red button.
And I've had it! *tears out hair*
Labels are retarded whether you are given them or give them to yourself. People treat "gothdom" is like a religion...people make it up as they go along to suit their needs in order to "belong".
Myth one: "being yourself is goth"
Okay, so a gangster is being himself, his lifestyle and mentality and heart intertwined with the streetlife he grew up in. If I said he's goth because he's being himself, it'd be ludicrous. A little preppie girl is being who she truly is, loves christina aguilera a whole lot, and has a backstreet boys backpack. If I said she was goth, you'd hit me with a stick and ask if I'm okay. Just being yourself doen't make you goth...it doesn't make you anything other than being yourself. Just like EVERYONE ELSE.
Myth two: "if you're an outcast, you're goth"
A nice kid with good grades and is pretty easy going and nice gets the shit kicked out of him every day, 'cause he's nice, and he's a wimp. This kid sees a group of kids in the same school who wear black and listen to korn or some other godawful similar band, and everyone hates them too. So this kid puts on black clothes and starts listening to korn, and all of a sudden a little goth tinkerbell flies out of his ass crack and says "welcome, welcome to the darkside...bring us your weak, bring us your poor, bring us your poorly done eyeliner and bad poetry, 'cause everyone hates us too." That, and he get's called a "poseur".
Myth three: "wearing black makes you special"
no it doesn't.
And all the rallying of "I'm different and nobody understands me and I'm treated unfairly". Well, yeah, you and the rest of the world, sweetcheeks. Then turn around and bitch about the "hicks" and the "prepps" and the "normals". I didn't know wearing black gave you liscence to hypocracy.
What, you think you can go to school in deathmetal makeup and crotchless pants and your hair all freaked out and NOT get some sort of reaction? What, you want people to just walk up and say "man, you're really original. You're sure expressing yourself in a radically socially unacceptable way, you must really keep your parents on their toes with your nonconformist attire. Right on." No. You're going to get called a freak, a fag, marilyn manson, etc. You choose to dress a way that get's you messed with, that is tried and true to get you messed with (no playing dumb, kids. You know it damned well and had PLENTY of warning), so stand up like a big boy/girl and take it if it's so near and dear to you! Sure, it sucks, yeah, it's not fair and it's usually the result of originality in homogenized bland idiotville, but whether you believe or not you were "born" this way, you choose to follow it, so be strong about it. Wipe the tears, pull up your sagging drawers, put some ice on that black eye.
Myth four: "there is a definition to goth" (and you're the only one privy to that deep dark secret)
No, there isn't. Not anymore. Hell, it's not even a subculture. Subcultures aren't popularly known, and has a sort of mystique. Everybody and their mother knows some form of "goth" even if its the retarded media drenched kind...the kind that makes news with one braincell between two people and a couple of shotguns. Hell, everyone's goth now, right? We're all so individual. And everyone has an ultimately all inclusive evasive answer to the query of goth. People go on and on how "it's not about the clothes or the music or the lifestyle or the clubs or the makeup or the interests or the genetic code or the cigarettes you smoke and the booze you drink or the people you hang around and the mentality, and oh, I'M not goth, and neither are you because blah blah blah" Jeezuz! Bullshit! It's ALL of that ('cept for maybe the genetic code thingy), and some people to a lesser degree, it just makes you "less goth" or something like that than someone else, HEAVEN FORBID! Boo hoo! Cry some more, just don't come to me to fix your makeup!
I think I'm done now. Back to surfing the void.
end transmission

I am just confused by one thing...
If there is no longer a definition to goth... how can you say that anyone is a poser or poseur?

No wonder Goth is a four letter word...hard to catagorize, hard to follow through with, and hard to freaking understand. I'm not even sure I'm Goth, just that that's how I think of myself (Consequently, Goth is actually not allowed in the Navy, so apparently THEY have it figured...) In any case...I agree pretty much with everything up there, it makes sense...theres another one though, an associate of mine stated his definition of goth was freaks who dress in black and get beat up a lot (which I think corollates to an earlier Myth) Win one for gothdom, I squished his nose with my fishnet covered hand...wheeee. I think it's the socks though...man, I've got some mad goth socks...goth socks rock...
