Articles: Laws, What would you ban?
Posted by BlueLinn on Thursday, October 18, 2001 - 04:01 AM PST

Rant
Many things in this current civilization could be done without. Many laws and social taboos are out of line and completely bogus. Where did our government fail? How do we allow ourselves to fall into these social and political boundaries? Easy, we get sucked into the conflicts of those who are popular only because no blemish marrs their beautiful faces. And perfect bodies are the norm in this Mattel Barbie, and Silicon influenced world. If I were to create my own civilization, if it were possible, I would wish for a pure and simple Utopia. However because we are only human, and human nature flourishes around our violent tendencies, Only three laws that I would ban shall grace this page. No, they are not all government laws, nor are they all social taboos or bans. Though predominantly social, these laws are as follows.... 1. The Social constraints of monkey see-monkey do. Or otherwise known, as follow the leader.
2. The Parent/child relationship of "I am older therefor, I must run you're life."
3. The anti-smoking and drinking laws for those whom are "underage'.

The Social constraints set upon us since the dawn of so called "high-fashion'. Those who could purchase the most merchandise from overpriced stores and who could afford fancy restaurant prices, the heights of the rich-folk world. Everyone wants to be rich, however there is a true difference in what you would spend the money on and what they would spend the money on. Think hard about this question I propose to you. If you had a million dollars, would you spend it on clothes, jewelry, cars, fancy restaurants? Or would you spend it on college, a nice house, or bills? There is no right or wrong answer; however, buying those things that the "popular' people have just to allow yourself to feel part of the social elite is not always the wisest choice. There is no sense in abiding by the way that others will spend money, or the way that they look while doing it. Fashion is just a glamorous word to describe plastic dolls. Why commit yourself to fall to the level of greed and deception that those who relish that world abide by every day? Or perhaps hitting closer to home, how about the school?

There are distinct groups of people, the football players, the preps, and the popular people who could be categorized by, not only how they look, but also by how they act. What is the point of deception and cruel words? To make themselves feel better? No, perhaps it is to hide behind a curtain, to set them apart. Though, how can they be set apart when they are all the same? Just one more doll in the plastic world of Barbie. No, I do not mean to categorize them by name and number as you would a file or folder. There is a bit of good in every writhing snake on the ground. However, those who are truly nice and kind only want to "fit in' and follow the crowd. So that most of the free sprits are no longer free but are eventually twisted by their choice of friends and molded to a particular group.

No matter who you are, no matter what group or category you fall in, you still follow the crowd by what group you hang with. Now I know we can not relinquish this completely, however I would wish to close the gaps and dissolve the vast enmity between those in different groups. There is no telling whether the difference between people is too great. But what I would ban, if it were at all possible, would be the perfect deception that people put on every day. In the form of a mask of attitude or a few layers of makeup, and allow people to be who they are, not what they are made.

Continuing on, another point that rocks the boat of human nature is the Parent Child relationship. Even though it can be difficult at times, if not impossible. Some parents are too overprotective of their children and do not let them lead their own lives. This could be shown by picking out their outfits, choosing the classes and courses their kids take, or setting boundaries that are impossible to follow. If you take away the rules and the constraint, and you let the child grow and flourish, you should find that parents often do make mistakes and children do have minds of their own. I would ban the confusion, mistrust, and lies between parents and children. No matter how impossible this may seem, it is not. Let go of the children and let them stand on their own. Every other species or creature on the face of the earth allow their children more freedom than we allow ours. Even though we call ourselves the most intelligent, we also have the most problems. Freedom at an early age would allow the society to build upon life and learning. We can not allow children to become dependent, or later on in life they will continue the same kind of behavior most of us exhibit now. The entire society would be changed and we would have more self-dependant beings, rather than scared and frightened children. Yes it is good to baby a child sometimes; however, there is no sense in treating a young adult like a child. All we need is love, even if parents show love in different ways. Don't show love by protecting children from the world that they will one day inherit. We will all see the world in it's true light sooner or later. Why not allow them to adjust while youth is still before them? All that is needed is the truth and freedom to speak openly without the fear of being put on the executioner's block,{so to speak}.

The third choice of a law to ban would be a governmental law. More recently altered and added on to. Has anyone ever noticed that America has the highest amount of underage smokers and drinkers in the world? Well it is true. While every other country has more lenient laws or none at all concerning this issue they have far less problems with controlling their young. Why does America's government find it necessary to have such laws? It is because we are afraid, afraid of what adults did in their youths. They do not want their children to come into contact with what they did as children. However that law becomes motivation. That law becomes a need, an excitement, and a thrill, begging to be taken on. Therefore, we take on that adventure, and make stupid choices and mistakes. Mistakes we regret for the rest of our lives, if we do not die before we realize those mistakes. Why should others care what one does with their own bodies? As long as no one other than himself or herself gets hurt in the process? People die from homicide every day. Why not allow a few thrills in life? It is our choice what to do with our own bodies; they belong to no one else.

We would change the laws and change society in the process. Things would eventually get calmed down, and people would remember their mistakes as mistakes, not as thrills or joyrides.

So what is the conclusion to this little escapade into the social and government laws of civilization? The conclusion is freedom. Freedom of mind, body, and soul, if you believe in souls. If not souls then at least the spirit of the choice, the choice to make up your own life and deny the constraints that have been shackled upon us since the dawn of time... or perhaps, merely since the dawn of laws. True freedom is not having, or feeling the need to do something that in your heart of hearts you know will hurt someone, or hurt yourself. That is freedom, and that is my conclusion.

Actually, we dont' live in a barbie doll world, and perfect is not the norm. People are getting fatter, and the plus sized populace is demanding leverage. Plus sizes in stores have increased in selection, and hot topic has released a sister-store "torrid", a boutique type hot topic that carries sizes 16 and up, and larger shoe sizes as well. they are in california right now near the home office, but they are available online as well. They are doing really really well with this new store, and plans to open more outside california are in the works.
I hate to break it to you, but a utopia is not only impossible, but if achieved, would not last. In order to do this, you would have to change human nature all the way down to our GENES....something nobody has the right to do. Yeah, war and social sniping is bad and wrong and all that, but we have our free will, and that's one small price for free will. A utopia would rob us of our free will, as we'd all be tree hugging peace and love flowerpower love your neighbor bubblegum gooey smell the flowers hippies with NO free will, just directed to flit about and work as a big friggin' TEAM.
I respect your wish for a violence free world, but it's a pipe dream. THere is no "I" in team, but there's a "me", and it just won't work.
Violence, war, upheaval, all are things that wake us from lethargic peace time slumber, and get our technology jumpstarted, our brains jumpstarted, our economies jumpstarted. Every villain has made the world a better place in some way. France would still be a dangerous and constipated monarchy if not for bastards like napoleon. Would the plight of the jews have ever been brought to world light if not for the attrocities of the Furer?
Would we have gotten all our social and technological advances, would there not be paved roads to all points throughout europe without the brutal reign of rome? Would we not be FREE to complain about the injustices of the world, take cheap shots at our presidents, be HERE on a free speech forum woeing the ways of humanity if we'd not battled our way, immigrants and criminals and refugees, from the grip of great brittain? Would we not have ever brought about the placing of a man on the moon and back safely if not for the cold war?
People don't think nor do they act unless they have to. It's sad, but it's true.
I dont' like the way people form into cliques either, but we all do it. I meet a lot of goths online that think that by virtue of their "darkness" and insight and bullcrap that they are more intellectual, creative, understanding, spiritual, that their music is the only that has "meaning",repressed etc. just by virtue of owning a bauhaus cd and a white powder compact. They bash to so said "normals" while branding themselves outcasts, and complaining how nobody accepts them. It sucks, but we aren't exempt from social pitfalls.
A relaxing of the drug and alcohol laws would be ideal, however. Yes there are underage smokers and drinkers...no law will ever prevent a friend or big brother or sister from buying underage kids booze or smokes. How many millions of dollars are spent each year enforcing these ridiculous laws? On the drug policy...yes, there will always be people who abuse, but there are ADULTS that abuse drugs, alcohol, cigarettes. If they were to legalize drugs, relax the cigarette/alcohol laws, in the first decade or so, indeed, people will go nuts. They will abuse. But when the fad is over, and the freedom to drink, consume, inhale whatever is gone, people will use responsibly, and a lot of people probably won't at all, just because there isn't someone saying they cant. I know quite a few people that would benifit from taking a hit off a pipe now and then :)
Plus, the government can regulate it and make a LOT of money off it, which could go back to the people or do whatever the hell they do with it, and won't be eyeballing our paychecks for revenue quite as much.
Freedom
