Articles: the things we do for pets |

This was occurring to me today as I was giving my fiance's cat razzle her twice daily I.V. The poor kitty has been puking her ancient guts out allll weeeek and finally three days ago quit trying to eat or drink because even a taste of water would come right back up.
I took her to the vet, and $125 later, I was at home with a bag of fluid and needles trying to rehydrate her poor little body, along with a worming pill, hairball treatment, and an anti-nausea shot. I wanted to take care of her myself, not leave her alone in a hospital to feel abandoned. She's 18 yrs old and I was going to be damned if a stomach ache was goinng to do her in. How many people would do this for a pet? I get up about 15 min early in the morning so she can sit on my lap and let me poke a needle into her so she doesn't dry up and die. I would do it in a heartbeat for any of my pets, my dog, my rats... But the feeling when I saw her slap my dog away from her food dish so she could actually EAT for the first time in four days was a proud moment. She had a nibble of dry cat food, and she drank a little water. I've bottle fed a rat antibiotics for two weeks for a tooth infection and $50 for a vet visit. My dog is relatively healthy, so no horror stories for her thank goodness... What have you done for a pet that makes people think you're a headcase? My mother couldn't believe that she saw my rat wrapping his little paws around the eye dropper to dring the pink bubble gum flavored medicine. "I would have just let the damned thing die" "That's why I didn't ask YOU to take him to the vet" Have you ever had to bully your way past a stupid receptionist just to get a little help for your best friend in the world? I've done it lots of times just to get a sick rat in to the doctor, who is a kind and wonderful man. Have you ever sat up all night with a pet in a coma so they wouldn't die alone? With an aging pet that is doomed of old age so you'll be the last thing they'll see? With a dying pet at the vet's that has to be put down, and you don't want them to be afraid? What have you done for a pet that goes above and beyond what most people would...

My cat just came home this week from a 4 day hospital stay. He had his back leg amputated. I paid out the NOSE for this surgery. People think I'm crazy, and wonder why I didn't just have him put to sleep.
A not-yet-two-year-old cat put to sleep? over something that is far from vital such as a leg? Preposterous.
Those of you who are familiar with my kitties, the russian blue is the one who had the amputation. He's feeling fine (morphine patch), and looking pretty good (I've posted a photo, waiting for devin to actually POST it - it's in the Members/Other folder).
I adopted this cat when he was missing a back foot, which just couldn't seem to heal properly...most people told me I should just take him back to the shelter, when after a week of having him I was told he needed a very expensive surgery. "You should take him now before you get attached"
How could I live with myself over something as silly as money? I just smirk and say my usual line "money is made up!"
I've had him over a year and a half now, and I'm so glad I didn't let anyone bully me into feeling stupid about the decision!
For now...I pick him up and set him on the bed every night, and place him on the floor in the morning. (too high to jump while he is healing). I'm pondering making a disabled kitty friendly apartment, with ramps!! ;)

Just because they eat better than we do...

I see no problem with going off the beaten path for your buddies, whether they have fur or not. My friend Daniel, when we were high-school buddies, had cats named Pretty, Boots, Tiki and Zoe, about 5 or 6 snakes whose names I can't remember, a lizard named Elizabeth, a few tarantulas, and dogs named Rocky, Booger, Jenny and Charlie. Charlie was deaf and incredibly old. And man, did he stink. Daniel made sure he was personally there when Charlie had an infection so rampant that he had a choice of either being put to sleep, or having his skin disintegrate and his guts fall out. Daniel actually missed school that day and risked being expelled because of his absences for Charlie. AND he's stayed up nights with his snake Persephone because she was sick. I don't think he's crazy.
My ex, Billy, thought I was odd because the kitten we got together, Nicholas, had incredibly weak legs his first few weeks with us and I would hold him up 3 times a day in front of his dishes so he could eat, and I'd take him to bed with us. Nicky is happy, strong, and loves to play fetch now, by the way. ^.^ I left him with Billy when I had to go, because Billy needed a friend that affectionate more than I did. But I swear, if anything goes wrong with Shmoo, or the ferrets, or even Judith, I've got to find a way to be with them, and take care of them as much as I'm financially able at the time. Judith's gonna hate us soon cause we need to get her fixed.
You're not the only loon in the lake. :)

If you can start the day without caffeine or pep pills,
If you can be cheerful, ignoring aches and pains,
If you can resist complaining and boring people with you troubles,
If you can eat the same food everyday and be grateful for it,
If you can understand when loved ones are too busy to give you time,
If you can overlook when people take things out on you when, through no
fault of yours, something goes wrong,
If you can take criticism and blame without resentment,
If you can face the world without lies and deceit,
If you can conquer tension without medical help,
If you can relax without liquor,
If you can sleep without the aid of drugs,
Then...........
... you're probably a cat.

We got my collie Phoebe through quite a few traumas . . . the time she was hit by a truck, she was sedated, shaved, and stitched. When she had a cyst, her tail was amputated.
Last time she wasn't so lucky. We had to put her to sleep :( She had a hole in her side, about three inches across and an inch deep, full of maggots, and a skin disease all over her body. My doggie was rotting. I'd had her since I was two years old . . . she was smelly, slow, and she barked too much, but I miss her.

O.K. My first cat was a sray he came to me and stayed until my dad died... then we went on a trip to England and the neighbors didnt feed him!!! He ran away and i cryed for months!
Then we got another cat and two ducks, the first duck, loppy, got eaten by something and we had to bury her in the frozen ground..it was september, then we got another duck because the one left ran around the house quacking and looking for her friend, then she got eggbound and we paid $250, dollars for her and then we had to put her down. Our other cat braught in an infant mouse, its eyes were still closed and i stayed up all night dropper-feeding it, but one day it was cold and dead i do this with all animals and has it helped me? no! they all die! P.S. my second cat: Minxy has gotten eaten by something.....
