Articles: Fine Whine |

Ok here's a question that bothers me from time to time. Why are there so many whiny goths? To quote a friend "goths kickass - they're literate, educated, artistic thinkers". So why can you hear the whine when you walk by a group of goths hanging out at that cool coffeshop? I admit that they whine in a literate, educated, artisitc way, but why do it in the first place?
We are the freethinkers. We are the omni-franchised. So why do we whine about being oppressed?
Lets look at some real oppressed people and see what we have in common shall we? Lets compare the Catholics in China with goths. In China as a Catholic you can't gather in large groups where you might be seen. You can't wear anything that is indicative of your beliefs. You must hide. The penalty is still often death if you are caught.
Now lets look at goths. We can congregate in large groups and we often do at dance clubs, coffee shops, malls, anywhere. We can wear things that indicate our beliefs, be it all black and PVC or rude T-shirts. And what is the penalty for being goth? We get funny things yelled at us, but very rarely are we killed for just being goth.
We may not be the first to get hired for every job to which we apply, but we aren't the last either. We get stuff yelled at us from fast moving vehicles, but we aren't being shot at. We occationally have chest-beating competitions with others. This happens to everyone. We whine that HOT TOPIC doesn't carry the hair color that we want. We whine that its hard to find the kind of house furnishings that we want in TARGET. We whine that our teachers treat us like leapers. They treat all kids like leapers. They HATE kids, and you would too if you had to deal with 30 of the screaming monkeys everyday for minimum wage.
Nightside owns his own bisiness. So do I. Noone would call Bettie_X oppressed, especially not to her face. I'd love to see someone explain to Devin that he is oppressed. Rogue is certainly not my idea of a poster child for the oppressed. (this is my idea of a good joke by the way. Just try to picture someone telling a room full of us that we are oppressed. I laughed out loud at the image, really)
Any town, any city, any country to which we might venture has goths waiting with open arms and fashion advice. We are free to travel the world, free to think what we want, free to express those thoughts in almost any way we see fit. Liberated doesn't seem a strong enough word for what we are. Blessed also doesnt cover it. Preeminent? August? I know! We are goth!
Long enough for ya' Devin? wink.

Well I DO own my own biz, have for a lot of years since I was 20 in fact. I became self employed because I was just not the conformist that the 9-5 crowd wanted. I did not whine about not being able to get a job, I made my own thank you, and have made a fair living working for my slef ever since. I OWE a debt to those that would not hire me, I have been a lot happier working for ME then for THEM... Though I HAVE put most of them out of biz... LOL Quality just beats the suites once the customers find out!
Never have been one to whine much.... But it MAY be just being used as a rally point. When a group feels there is a common enemy they uninte stronger. So the whine may be the search for that common enmeny to uninte against???? Seems to be about the only thing that makes sence to me.... One of the things I admire most about the 'goth' people I know is that they are strong people. True most of us have put up with a lot of slams and put downs but most of the goth folk I know are so far above even careing what the 'norm's' think that it is just laughed off. But when one is still in the 'kid' years the slams hurt, the skin has yet to get tough, that may also account for some of it. I LOVE it when the norm's put me down, just means I am doing something right and getting to THEM.... LOL Just the point of view.

"no one would call bettie_x oppressed, at least not to her face.."
C, you are the best....I don't whine, as said, I BITCH, but I don't cry and boo hoo. That's for goddamned little girls, says me.
I think a lot of it is that it's cool to be oppressed, to be a minority, thinks it gives you special privelidges or that it should, and it gives you an excuse for failure. Yeah, I work retail....HOT TOPIC thank you, and spent 3yrs at spencer's, 2yrs as a well respected member of management. I'm responsible for me, nobody else. I can't STAND hearing "all I do is wear black and a shirt that says 'fuckyou, you fuckin' fuck" and Everyone TEASES me ..they just don't understand my DEPTH, my INTELLEGENCE......Yeah, uh huh, a shirt with the only word a variance of the f word is really showing how REFINED you are. I look back at highschool pictures, and I KNOW why I got teased...yeah it sucks, but hey, they would have made fun of something, so I'm just glad it was just my clothes.
I can't stand that pansy wansy boo hoo pissy wishy washy toothless rallying and limpwristing bullSHIT.
Tally ho, C...tell it like it is....
ps-am I really that scary?

See the thing that scares me when it comes to crying about stuff like this is the phrase that so much of our parent culture has memorized by the time they can talk....
What you cryin' 'bout boy? Whant me to GIVE you something to cry about?
Goth is certainly not oppressed now, but with a little well placed media attention it could be very easily.

Hey, I don't whine, but some people suck. And it's o.K. to vent about other peoples insensitive comments sometimes. But yur right, I hate it when people keep whining about the same things all the time, it gets very very old. If you realy want something to RAVE about though, go to www.jesushatessmut.com I think its fake but its anoyingly funny.
