Articles: The Succession is Secured |

The torch is now passed and the succession is secured. I have now found a replacement for my bathroom spider, for anyone that is interested!
I stepped into the bathroom yesterday, to prepare the area to re-dye my boyfriend's purple hair. Lo and behold, there was a little spider, complete miniature of the one he killed, hanging from the center of the ceiling at eye-level.
I took hold of its string and it crawled up to my hand. I showed it to my boyfriend, and he said I could keep it, just not in the shower. I tried to put it in the opposite corner to the shower, but it wouldn't go. It just wanted to crawl all over my hand. Finally I deposited it on the picture I have on a nearby wall, and it crawled over to the corner all by itself and started to build a web.
Uncannily, that was not the only spider in my day. When we got into the car to go shopping, I found another spider on my lap. He (my boyfriend, not the spider) objected to a spider in the car, so I carefully scooped it up and tossed it gently out the window. I hope it found a happy new home.
So of course, I had to buy a spider ring that day. I am wearing it now. It is beautiful. I like spiders!!!

Wow. This is almost scaring me. Another spider just came down from the ceiling beside me as I was using my computer. It came down to eyelevel, I put out my hand to touch it, and it scurried back up to the ceiling and is hanging out up there now. What is this with me and spiders recently?
Come to think of it, the first time my boyfriend and I really connected was when we were just becoming friends at work. We saw a spider, he stepped on it, I protested, he picked up his foot, and it scurried away, because miraculously it had lodged between the treads of his boots. I bent down to comfort the poor thing, and he just laughed and laughed.
So maybe it's not me and spiders recently. Maybe I was a spider in a past life? Who knows!
Spiders of the world, unite!

We too have a bathroom spider. This is no gentle beast, however. It's a vicious beast of prey... the thing is horrific... it's a small spider and has about 3 wolf spider corpses in its web. That's why it's still alive, it kills those huge, very frightening ones. Although it's growing, on the diet of many large, vicious spiders... I'm no wussy, but I've been cautious around spiders ever since a recluse bit me once, and its venom ate a good chunk of flesh out of my leg... now, when I see a large, brown spider, I kill it... the kids (the twins, espically) like to play with them, and I'm terrified that they'll play with the wrong kind of spider someday, and get a nasty bite out of it. Here in Colorado, there's this spider epidemic, too. There is a yearly moth migration that keeps them well fed, and the house gets invaded by spiders... we see about 10 a week... huge wolf spiders.... *shudder*

Re: The Succession is Secured by Schizo on Jul 13, 2001 - 06:53 AM (User info | Send a Message) | Used to have that type when I was a teenager in PA. My mom has severe arachnophobia, and we lived in a house that bred hand-sized ones in our basement. One ran towards her bare feet once and she screamed bloody blue murder, even though the plumber was in the house!
One night I left my window open. There was a big hole in my screen. When I went into my room later, there was the biggest spider I had ever seen sitting calmly on my pillow! Literally about the size of my fist! Now, my room was a horrible mess, so I wanted to shovel the worst of it into the closet before calling for reinforcements. Turned my back for a bit, turned around, and it was gone! Lost my nerve and went yelling for my brother!
Of course, he went sauntering in, all nonchalant, not believing the poor hysterical female's descriptions. He brought a flyswatter with him. A few seconds later, we hear his voice wafting from my room... "Oh, it IS big!" Out he trots and grabs my softball bat... BANG BANG!!! The sound of wood bouncing off of springs muffled by a very thin mattress is heard all the way in the living room. He carried the mangled corpse out of my room discretely swathed in a papertowel. I changed my sheets and pillowcase before sleeping, and shut my window!
But I overcame my fear of spiders by forcing myself to kill in cold blood a spider nearly as large that I found crawling on the side of my cousin's house. Now I have no fear for bugs or creepy-crawlies in general. If I had an audience, I would let one of those big wolfies crawl on me. I'm such a freakin' show-off! But I can't bear snakes... |

Ever since I read this I keep seeing spiders everywhere...I found a rather scary looking one crawling up the front of my shirt, one was making its way across the floor, a huge one in my bathroom, and a little one that lives by my computer monitor (i've been feeding that one lately, it's kinda my pet now)....just thought i'd share...

Re: The Succession is Secured by Schizo on Jul 16, 2001 - 06:03 AM (User info | Send a Message) | Glad to find someone who isn't freaked out by spiders!
Why should we hate something just because it has more legs than us? Isn't that discrimination?
Most spiders are harmless animals who build beautiful objects and eat bugs that bother us. Why do we kill them and drive them out of our houses? It doesn't make sense to me.
Besides, they're beautiful! |
