Neither Pono nor Ma'at are a "normative basis for morality". A tree isnt a moral issue, smiling at children isnt a moral issue. Morality, as a concept, only exists for those that have ways to avoid doing what is Pono, maintains Ma'at, is Right Action, or the unpronouncable string of sounds that my people call it, in the first place.
Its not a way to think of "immoral but right" actions, it is a way to stop pretending that the is some wiggle room in what works and what doesnt and to stop living in a make believe private world in your own head and start living in the world.
Pono and Ma'at and Right Action and all the other words for "it", might, in a christian or dualistic mind be called soemthing like "duty" and "debt" and "saintly" and "so that i am remembered kindly by my great great grand children" and "because i have to". As Devin said, English makes you move your mouth alot and still fail to say it well. *sigh*
How do you explain the sunrise to a blind person?
